Serbian verbal prefixes often do two things together: they give an event a boundary and they contribute lexical meaning such as direction, beginning, accumulation, addition, or passage through. Писати → написати is a close process–completion pair, but преписати, записати, and потписати mean “copy,” “write down,” and “sign.” They are perfective, yet they are not interchangeable perfective forms of one English verb.
The right unit to learn is therefore a network: base, prefixed perfective, common secondary imperfective, government, and one characteristic context. A prefix is not a Serbian equivalent of English past tense, a separable particle, or an empty “completed” marker.
A writing network
The family around писати makes lexical specialization visible.
| Perfective | Typical meaning | Secondary imperfective |
|---|---|---|
| написати | write/produce a complete text | normally plain писати for current and habitual writing |
| записати | write down, record | записивати |
| преписати | copy, transcribe | преписивати |
| дописати | add in writing, finish an added part | дописивати |
| потписати | sign | потписивати |
| исписати | write out, cover/fill with writing | исписивати |
Пишем извештај од јутрос, али ћу га написати тек после састанка.
I've been writing the report since this morning, but I won't finish it until after the meeting.
Запиши број предмета, па препиши адресу са коверте.
Write down the case number, then copy the address from the envelope.
Дописала је кратку напомену и потписала обе копије.
She added a short note and signed both copies.
Only написати is the ordinary close completion partner of generic писати in these contexts. Написивати is recorded as dated or otherwise marked in lexicographic discussion and is not the neutral modern choice for “write habitually.” By contrast, записивати, преписивати, and потписивати are ordinary because they preserve a distinct prefixed meaning.
Frequent meanings are tendencies, not translations
| Prefix | Frequent contribution | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| на- | completed product or accumulation | написати, набрати |
| по- | limited episode or consumption/completion | поразговарати, појести |
| за- | onset, closure, or recording | запевати, затворити, записати |
| у- | movement inward or accomplished task | ући, урадити |
| из- | movement outward or exhaustive result | изаћи, исписати |
| до- | arrival or addition up to an endpoint | доћи, дописати |
| пре- | across, transfer, rearrangement | прећи, преписати, преуредити |
| од- | away, separation, response/write-off | однети, отписати |
One prefix can support several related meanings, and the root determines which develops. За- marks onset in запевати “start singing,” closure in затворити “close,” and recording in записати “write down.” There is no usable rule “за- means begin” outside the relevant lexical class.
Кад је оркестар засвирао, публика је запевала заједно с певачицом.
When the band began to play, the audience began singing along with the singer.
Затвори прозор пре него што изађеш из канцеларије.
Close the window before you leave the office.
Similarly, по- can delimit a short episode in поразговарати, but појести normally presents consuming the relevant food to its endpoint.
После предавања смо поразговарали с професорком о теми рада.
After the lecture, we talked with the professor for a while about the paper topic.
Дете је појело целу ужину пре поласка.
The child ate the whole snack before leaving.
The object and context determine the event shape. A prefix meaning is a semantic contribution, not a fixed English gloss.
Direction is clearest with motion verbs
Spatial prefixes retain especially concrete meanings with directed motion: ући “enter,” изаћи “exit,” доћи “come/arrive,” отићи “leave/go away,” прећи “cross/go over.” The form may be historically and morphologically complex; speakers learn the whole verb and its present stem.
Ушли смо на споредни улаз, прешли хол и изашли у двориште.
We entered through the side entrance, crossed the lobby, and went out into the courtyard.
Prefixes do not replace prepositions or case. Ући у салу takes у + accusative for the destination; изаћи из сале takes из + genitive for the source. The prefix profiles a path, while the complement locates its endpoint or origin.
Курир је дошао до рецепције, али није ушао у зграду.
The courier came as far as reception but did not enter the building.
See aspect and motion verbs for the wider network. This page concentrates on what prefixation creates.
Prefixation can change government and participants
A derived verb may select different complements from its base. Писати о теми “write about a topic,” записати податак “record a piece of information,” and дописивати се с колегом “correspond with a colleague” do not share one frame.
Пише о градској архитектури, а с уредницом се дописује на српском.
He writes about urban architecture and corresponds with the editor in Serbian.
The reflexive reciprocal verb дописивати се takes с(а) + instrumental for the correspondent. Its structure cannot be obtained by attaching до- while preserving every syntactic property of писати.
Another clear contrast is мислити о нечему “think about something” versus измислити нешто “invent something.”
Дуго је мислила о новом називу, а онда је измислила сасвим нову реч.
She thought about the new name for a long time, and then invented a completely new word.
Aspect and valency change together because prefixation derives a new lexeme.
Secondary imperfectives retain the prefix meaning
A prefixed perfective can develop a secondary imperfective, often with -ивати/-авати and an altered present stem.
| Perfective | Secondary imperfective | Present |
|---|---|---|
| записати | записивати | записујем |
| преписати | преписивати | преписујем |
| потписати | потписивати | потписујем |
| изградити | изграђивати | изграђујем |
Секретарка сваког петка потписује налоге и записује бројеве рачуна.
Every Friday the secretary signs the orders and records the account numbers.
The imperfective suffix reopens or repeats the derived event; it does not remove the prefix meaning. Преписивати remains “copy,” not generic “write slowly.” Formation is not always predictable, so store infinitive and present together. The secondary imperfectives page explains their distribution.
A prefix does not guarantee perfective aspect
Many prefixed verbs are perfective, but visible initial syllables do not let you assign aspect mechanically. Постојати, зависити, and припадати are imperfective despite shapes that resemble prefixes plus roots. Secondary imperfectives such as преписивати also visibly contain prefixes.
Коначна цена зависи од броја учесника и припадајућих трошкова.
The final price depends on the number of participants and the associated costs.
The verbs зависи and the adjective припадајућих cannot be classified by simply counting prefixes. A dictionary aspect label and real paradigm remain necessary.
Perfective present forms likewise do not describe an ongoing event at speech time. Напишем is morphologically present but normally occurs in a future-dependent, habitual, modal, or similar non-actual frame.
Кад напишем закључак, послаћу ти цео рукопис.
When I finish writing the conclusion, I'll send you the whole manuscript.
For current writing, use imperfective пишем.
Spelling at the prefix boundary
Serbian spelling records regular voicing assimilation. Prefix-final consonants may therefore differ on the surface:
| Underlying family | Standard form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| под- + писати | потписати | sign |
| од- + писати | отписати | write off/reply in writing |
| из- + писати | исписати | write out/fill with writing |
| раз- + писати | расписати | announce/call formally; prescribe in detail |
These spellings are obligatory. Stress may also shift within a prefixed family, but ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark it. Consult an accent dictionary rather than adding accent signs to normal examples.
Prefix stacking is restricted
Serbian can contain more than one prefix, as in понаписати in particular distributive or accumulative contexts, but попричати contains only по- before the base причати. Surface similarity is not reliable segmentation, and stacking is not a productive learner strategy. Every added element changes event structure, lexical meaning, or register, and many imaginable combinations do not exist.
Use a multiply prefixed verb only when it is independently attested and you understand its distribution. Standard everyday meaning is usually clearer with an established verb plus an adverb or quantifier.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Map one family
For писати, написати, записати, записивати, преписати, label aspect and write one lexical gloss. Draw писати — написати as the close completion relation and keep recording/copying as separate branches.
Task 2: Match path and government
Choose ући, изаћи, доћи, or прећи, then supply the appropriate complement.
Ушли су у салу, изашли из ње после концерта и прешли преко трга до хотела.
They entered the hall, left it after the concert, and crossed the square to the hotel.
Common Mistakes
❌ Сваки префикс само претвара писати у исти свршени глагол.
Incorrect—each established prefixed verb contributes lexical meaning as well as aspectual structure.
✅ Написала је позив, записала адресу и потписала коверат.
She wrote the invitation, wrote down the address, and signed the envelope.
❌ Тренутно напишем одговор клијенту.
Incorrect for an ongoing present activity—perfective напишем cannot present writing in progress now.
✅ Управо пишем одговор на клијентово питање.
I'm writing a reply to the client's question right now.
❌ Подписали смо записник одмах после седнице.
Incorrect spelling—voicing assimilation gives потписали, not подписали.
✅ Потписали смо записник тек пошто смо проверили све измене.
We signed the minutes only after checking all the amendments.
❌ Преписујем значи да пишем спорије, без промене радње.
Incorrect—преписивати retains the lexical meaning ‘copy/transcribe.’
✅ Преписујем старе белешке у нову свеску.
I'm copying the old notes into a new notebook.
❌ Ушла је из канцеларије и изашла у ходник.
Incorrect path framing for the intended meaning—ући takes a destination, while изаћи takes a source.
✅ Изашла је из канцеларије и ушла у салу за састанке.
She left the office and entered the meeting room.
Key Takeaways
- Verbal prefixes combine event bounding with lexical meanings such as path, onset, addition, or exhaustive result.
- Close aspectual partners and wider lexical-family members are not the same thing.
- Prefixation can change government and participant structure, not only aspect.
- Secondary imperfectives retain the prefix meaning and must be learned with their present stems.
- Prefix-boundary spelling, stress, aspect, and prefix stacking all require attested forms rather than mechanical assembly.
