Writing Voicing Assimilation

Serbian normally changes the first of two neighboring obstruents so that its voicing matches the second, and standard spelling often records the result. Thus од + писати gives отписати, not одписати. The rule is strongly phonemic, but spelling also protects recognizable morphemes and established foreign forms, so write as you speak is an orientation—not an exceptionless algorithm.

The Seven Voicing Pairs

When paired obstruents meet inside a word, the consonant on the right normally controls the consonant on the left.

The voiceless consonants ф, х, ц have no single voiced-letter partners, but they still devoice a preceding paired obstruent: раз + хладити → расхладити, раз + цветати → расцветати. Sonorants such as м, н, њ, л, љ, р, ј do not trigger the rule. В also behaves separately: standard свој, тврд, овца do not become звој, дврд, офца in writing.

Devoicing Recorded in Spelling

Before a voiceless obstruent, a voiced member normally changes to its voiceless partner. Prefix–root boundaries make the structure especially visible.

The same process appears when inflection or derivation brings consonants together: Срб + -ски → српски, врабац → врапца, сладак → слатка. Do not memorize each as an unrelated spelling. Learn the related-word set and watch the stem respond to its new neighbor.

Voicing Recorded in Spelling

Before a voiced obstruent, a voiceless consonant normally changes to its voiced partner. These results often look like ordinary dictionary words because the morpheme boundary is no longer obvious.

In Latin script these are zbližiti, narudžbenica, svadba. The letter dž is one Serbian alphabetic letter and must remain dž, not dz; likewise č and ć, or ž and plain z, are never interchangeable.

Prefixes: Follow the Result, Not the Dictionary Shape

A prefix has a citation form, but it can have a regular surface form before a root. Compare the related sets:

• одвојити — однети — отписати — отказати: д remains before a vowel or sonorant but becomes т before п/к;
• извадити — избројати — испланирати — исцртати: з remains before a vowel or voiced б, but becomes с before п/ц;
• разбудити — разгледати — распитати се — расформирати: з remains before voiced б/г, but becomes с before п/ф.

This is why English-style morphological spelling can mislead: Serbian normally writes the assimilated consonant, not an unchanged prefix merely because its dictionary form is familiar.

Conventional Exceptions That Preserve Morphology

The most important native exception is written д before с and ш. Standard spelling keeps the morpheme or stem visible in председник, подстанар, одступити, градски, људски, одштампати, подшишати. Normal pronunciation still exerts devoicing pressure; the written exception does not instruct speakers to articulate a fully voiced д in isolation.

This sentence contains both outcomes. In потпредседница, the first д of underlying под- becomes т before п, but председница keeps written дс. One word therefore shows the productive rule and its conventional exception.

Some transparent new compounds keep paired consonants to protect their structure: подтип, подтекст, предтакмичење, субполаран (formal/technical). Learned and foreign formations may also preserve source-oriented clusters: адхезија, постдипломски, трансгресија (academic/technical). These are lexical conventions; there is no honest shortcut that predicts every loan. Check a current dictionary when a rare technical form matters.

Proper names can preserve inherited spelling too. Do not force a general sound rule onto a person's registered surname or a conventional place-name form.

Across Word Boundaries: Never Respell the Phrase

Assimilation can occur in fluent pronunciation across a space, but standard orthography keeps each word intact. Write код школе, без карте, наш гост, not phonetic respellings such as кот школе, бес карте, наж гост.

Serbian also lacks a blanket spelling rule of final devoicing. град, зуб, рог retain their final voiced letters. The fact that a following voiceless consonant may affect connected speech does not change the dictionary form.

Dictation and Proofreading Task

Have a speaker read this set without showing it: отписати дуг, председник општине, подстанарка из Ниша, бескрајан пут, код школе, постдипломске студије. For each cluster, decide among three labels:

1. assimilation written inside the word;
2. conventional spelling that preserves morphology or a learned element;
3. possible phonetic assimilation across a word boundary, never respelled.

Then proofread this mixed-script line: Potpredsednik je odštampao narudzbenicu i ostavio je kod skole. The fully standard Latin version is Potpredsednik je odštampao narudžbenicu i ostavio je kod škole. Its exact Cyrillic conversion is Потпредседник је одштампао наруџбеницу и оставио је код школе. Notice дш is preserved, while џ/dž and ш/š require exact letters.

If the surrounding text is Ekavian, keep председник and следећи. Ijekavian Serbian предсједник, сљедећи is standard in a consistently Ijekavian passage, but mixing reflexes accidentally is a proofreading error, not voicing assimilation.
