Serbian spelling often simplifies consonant groups created by inflection or word formation. A consonant can disappear because two identical sounds meet, because т/д stands before an affricate, or because a native cluster has an established simpler form. Yet other heavy clusters remain in writing to preserve a transparent compound, a lexical contrast, a loanword, or a proper name.
The practical decision is morphological: find the base and the suffix, then ask whether the resulting cluster belongs to a regular simplification class or a preservation class. The pronunciation guide concentrates on hearing and articulation; this page concentrates on choosing the written form.
One written consonant instead of two
When word formation brings identical or closely related consonants together, the standard result is often one consonant. Voicing assimilation may occur before the reduction.
| Analysis | Standard Cyrillic | Standard Latin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| без + зазоран | безазоран | bezazoran | brazen |
| од + делити | оделити | odeliti | divide off |
| Рус + -ски | руски | ruski | Russian |
| Француз + -ски | француски | francuski | French |
| пет + десет | педесет | pedeset | fifty |
| шест + десет | шездесет | šezdeset | sixty |
Извештај је одштампан у педесет примерака.
The report was printed in fifty copies.
Она преводи са руског и француског.
She translates from Russian and French.
Do not preserve every segment simply because you can identify it historically. The morphological analysis explains the modern form; it is not an instruction to write all underlying consonants.
Important cases where doubling remains
Three major classes resist reduction.
- Superlatives preserve the final
јofнај-before an adjective already beginning withј:најјачи,најјаснији,најједноставнији. - Transparent compounds can preserve paired consonants when reduction would blur the boundary:
поддијалекат,наддржавни,ваннаставни,транссибирски. шестсто,шестстоти, and related forms preserve the sequenceстст; an over-simplified form could be confused with a word relating to six rather than six hundred.
Ово је најједноставнији начин да провериш резултат.
This is the simplest way to check the result.
Документарни филм прати путнике на транссибирској рути.
The documentary follows travelers on a trans-Siberian route.
Архив садржи више од шестсто фотографија.
The archive contains more than six hundred photographs.
Т and д before affricates
The stops т and д normally disappear before ц, ч, ћ, ђ, џ. Those affricates already begin with a stop-like closure, so the larger cluster is reduced in both the established form and its spelling.
| Related form or analysis | Written result | Latin |
|---|---|---|
| задатак → plural | задаци | zadaci |
| напитак → plural | напици | napici |
| предак → plural | преци | preci |
| знат + ћу | знаћу | znaću |
| платити + ћемо | платићемо | platićemo |
| сладолед + џија | сладолеџија | sladoledžija |
Сви задаци су предати на време.
All the assignments were submitted on time.
Платићемо карте кад стигнемо на станицу.
We'll pay for the tickets when we reach the station.
The plural задаци is diagnosed by singular задатак, but т is not written in the plural. Similarly, the future is платићемо, not a form preserving the full infinitive ending before ћемо.
Compound boundaries are exceptions
Do not delete т/д automatically when the affricate begins the second part of a transparent compound. Standard forms include отцепити, потчинити, отчепити, потценити, подђакон, and подџарати.
Не потцењуј време потребно за поправку.
Don't underestimate the time needed for the repair.
Покушао је да отчепи одвод без алата.
He tried to unblock the drain without tools.
The contrast потчинити “subjugate” versus починити “commit, do” shows why the consonant matters. Morphology protects a meaning distinction.
Native clusters with т loss
In established native families, т often disappears after с/ш before another consonant. Related forms expose the missing segment.
| Form showing т | Simplified form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| частан | часна, часни | honorable |
| мастан | масна, масни | greasy, fatty |
| радостан | радосна, радосни | joyful |
| расти | расла, расли | grow — grew |
| болест | болешљив | illness — sickly |
Била је радосна због добрих вести.
She was delighted by the good news.
Деца су брзо расла током распуста.
The children grew quickly during the school holiday.
The diagnostic pair prevents both over-preservation (частна, растла) and random deletion. You remove the consonant only in the forms whose standard pattern requires it.
Clusters that remain intact
Newer loans often preserve clusters that native formations simplify: азбестни, протестни, контрастни, нафтни, шахтни. Nouns in -исткиња likewise keep the visible derivational structure: пијанисткиња, флаутисткиња, туристкиња.
Протестни скуп је завршен без инцидената.
The protest rally ended without incidents.
Пијанисткиња је изашла на бис.
The pianist returned for an encore.
Contrast can also block loss. прстни means “relating to a finger,” while прсни relates to the chest. Proper names may preserve consonants to maintain their inherited written identity. These are genuinely lexical decisions; there is no universal “delete the hardest consonant” rule.
Standard здравство keeps в even though casual speech may reduce the cluster. A widespread reduced pronunciation does not by itself establish a new neutral written form.
Улагање у здравство остаје главна тема расправе.
Investment in healthcare remains the main topic of debate.
здрав–здравље–здравство supports the preserved в, while частан–часна supports regular loss of т.Variety and script checks
Ekavian потценити/potceniti and Ijekavian Serbian потцијенити/potcijeniti are both standard within their respective reflexes. This guide uses Ekavian productively; do not write an Ijekavian form inside an otherwise Ekavian sentence unless comparison is the point.
Script conversion does not change the simplification rule: најјачи ↔ najjači, сладолеџија ↔ sladoledžija, здравство ↔ zdravstvo. Preserve č, ć, dž, đ, š, ž exactly. Avoid mixed forms such as здраvство, and do not import English title capitalization into ordinary words.
Dictation and proofreading task
Write these sentences from a recording, then underline each preserved or deleted consonant and name the reason.
Најјачи такмичар решио је све задатке.
The strongest contestant solved all the tasks.
После шестсто метара стигли смо до протестног скупа.
After six hundred meters, we reached the protest rally.
Now proofread this draft: Najaci takmicar je resio sve zadatke posle sessto metara. A corrected Latin version is Najjači takmičar je rešio sve zadatke posle šeststo metara. The corrections restore diacritics, doubled jj, and the normative cluster in šeststo; they also keep an internally consistent Ekavian form rešio.
Common Mistakes
❌ Задатци и изузетци су наведени на крају.
Incorrect — т disappears before ц in both plural forms.
✅ Задаци и изузеци су наведени на крају.
The tasks and exceptions are listed at the end.
❌ Ово је најачи аргумент у расправи.
Incorrect — the superlative prefix нај- preserves ј before јачи.
✅ Ово је најјачи аргумент у расправи.
This is the strongest argument in the debate.
❌ Немој поценити сложеност задатка.
Incorrect — the prefix boundary in потценити preserves т.
✅ Немој потценити сложеност задатка.
Don't underestimate the complexity of the task.
❌ Била је частна и радостна због награде.
Incorrect — standard feminine forms simplify стн to сн.
✅ Била је часна и радосна због награде.
She was honorable and delighted about the award.
❌ Она ради у здраvству.
Incorrect — Latin v has been mixed into an otherwise Cyrillic word.
✅ Она ради у здравству.
She works in healthcare.
Key Takeaways
Serbian reduces identical consonants, regularly loses т/д before many affricates, and simplifies several established native clusters. It preserves consonants in superlatives, transparent compounds, шестсто, many loans, proper names, and meaning-bearing contrasts. Related forms diagnose the structure, but the standard written result—not every imagined underlying segment and not every casual deletion—is what belongs on the page.
