Serbian obstruents normally agree in voicing when they meet in a cluster. The second consonant controls the first, so the process is regressive or anticipatory: a speaker prepares early for the voicing of the consonant that comes next. Inside many words, spelling records the resulting alternation; across a word boundary, pronunciation can assimilate while spelling stays unchanged.
The Voicing Pairs
Voicing assimilation involves paired obstruents. The vocal folds vibrate for the voiced member and remain apart for the voiceless member.
| Voiced | Voiceless | Latin pair |
|---|---|---|
| б | п | b–p |
| д | т | d–t |
| г | к | g–k |
| џ | ч | dž–č |
| ђ | ћ | đ–ć |
| з | с | z–s |
| ж | ш | ž–š |
The unpaired sounds ц and х can acquire voiced phonetic realizations in connected speech, but Serbian spelling does not introduce new letters for those allophones. Sonorants such as м, н, њ, л, љ, р, ј do not trigger this automatic pairing rule.
Devoicing Before a Voiceless Obstruent
When a voiced obstruent comes before a voiceless one, the first changes to its voiceless partner. Serbian spelling usually records this at a morpheme boundary inside a word.
| Underlying parts | Standard result | Change |
|---|---|---|
| од + писати | отписати | д → т before п |
| под + копати | поткопати | д → т before к |
| из + писати | исписати | з → с before п |
| без + крајан | бескрајан | з → с before к |
| врабац → genitive | врапца | б → п before ц |
Банка је морала да отпише стари дуг.
The bank had to write off the old debt.
Неко је поткопао темељ старе ограде.
Someone undermined the foundation of the old fence.
Исписала је адресу на полеђини коверте.
She wrote the address on the back of the envelope.
Посматрали смо врапца на прозору.
We watched a sparrow on the window.
Do not pronounce the first consonant as a separate, fully voiced segment and then pause. The cluster is coordinated as one sequence. At the same time, do not add a schwa between its members.
Voicing Before a Voiced Obstruent
The reverse process also occurs: a voiceless obstruent becomes voiced before a voiced one. Common words often conceal the historical or morphological boundary because the assimilated spelling is already lexicalized.
| Relationship | Standard result | Change |
|---|---|---|
| с + гулити | згулити | с → з before г |
| сват + ба | свадба | т → д before б |
| учити — уџбеник | уџбеник | the related noun has the lexicalized voiced cluster џб |
Свадба почиње у шест, а вечера у осам.
The wedding starts at six, and dinner at eight.
Нови уџбеник је стигао у књижару.
The new textbook arrived at the bookstore.
Морамо да згулимо стару боју са врата.
We need to scrape the old paint off the door.
These are spelling facts as well as pronunciation facts. English speakers sometimes preserve each morpheme visually and produce a mismatched cluster. Serbian has already resolved the mismatch in the written word.
Across Word Boundaries: Pronounce It, Do Not Respell It
In connected speech, the same anticipatory adjustment can apply when one word ends in an obstruent and the next begins with another. The orthographic words remain unchanged.
Он нас чека код куће.
He is waiting for us at home.
Before the voiceless к of куће, final д in код is commonly realized voiceless, approximately [т]. You still write код куће, never кот куће.
Не желим да идем без тебе.
I don’t want to go without you.
Before voiceless т, the final з of без is realized like с in connected speech. Spelling remains без тебе.
Наш брат стиже вечерас.
Our brother is arriving tonight.
The ш at the end of наш may be voiced toward ж before б in fluent speech. The phrase is still written with the dictionary forms наш брат.
Important Spelling Exceptions: д Before с or ш
Serbian spelling preserves д before с and ш at certain transparent morpheme boundaries, although speech normally assimilates and may further fuse the cluster. High-frequency examples include председник, подсетити, градски, људски, одшетати, and подшишати.
Председник градског већа је одшетао до излаза.
The president of the city council walked off toward the exit.
The written clusters дс in председник, градског and дш in одшетао preserve the visible morphemes. In normal speech they are not pronounced as a carefully separated voiced д followed by a voiceless fricative. Depending on the word and speaker, the sequence is devoiced and may sound affricate-like. The spelling exception is morphological; it does not cancel the phonetic pressure toward agreement.
Подсети ме да подшишам живу ограду.
Remind me to trim the hedge.
Write дс/дш in these standard forms. Spellings such as потсетити or отшетати wrongly copy only one stage of the pronunciation process and erase the standard morpheme boundary.
The Special Behavior of в
Serbian в does not act exactly like the ordinary paired obstruents. A voiceless consonant before в does not automatically become voiced: свој, сват, твор retain с or т. Conversely, в can become partly or fully voiceless before a voiceless obstruent in speech, but spelling usually keeps в.
Овца стоји поред дрвене ограде.
The sheep is standing by the wooden fence.
In овца, в may sound close to ф before voiceless ц. Standard spelling remains овца, not офца.
Ловца су видели на крају стазе.
They saw the hunter at the end of the trail.
The same applies to ловца: a phonetic [ф]-like realization does not create a spelling alternation. Learn these as an important limit on the otherwise productive rule.
No Automatic Word-Final Devoicing Rule
Unlike languages such as Russian or German, standard Serbian does not have a categorical rule that turns every voiced obstruent into its voiceless partner at the end of a word. The final consonant of град, зуб, рог, муж remains phonologically voiced, although it can be partly devoiced phonetically or assimilate to the next word.
Сад је тачно један сат.
It is exactly one o’clock now.
This natural phrase contrasts final д in сад “now” with final т in сат “hour.” Collapsing both to т removes a real lexical contrast.
Рок је кратак, а рог на скулптури је поломљен.
The deadline is short, and the horn on the sculpture is broken.
Рок ends in к, while рог ends in г. Do not spell or systematically pronounce both as рок. If the next word begins with a voiceless obstruent, connected-speech assimilation is a separate contextual process.
Listening-Recognition Task
Have a speaker record these sets in full phrases: отписати дуг, исписати адресу, свадба почиње, код куће, без тебе, градски превоз, овца стоји, and сад је један сат. On three passes:
- Mark whether the first consonant in each cluster is voiced or voiceless in the recording.
- Decide whether the spelling records the alternation, preserves a morpheme (градски), or preserves separate words (код куће).
- Repeat the phrase without inserting schwa and without turning the consonants into English letter names.
Then check the spelling independently. Sound predicts much of Serbian orthography, but the дс/дш, в, and word-boundary cases prevent a purely phonetic transcription strategy. For the separate issue of changes in articulation place, continue with place assimilation.
Accent and Length
Voicing assimilation does not tell you where a word’s pitch accent falls or whether a vowel is long. Ordinary spelling omits that prosodic information. Keep vowels clear, learn the consonant alternation, and consult an accent-marked dictionary or recording for prosody rather than transferring strong English stress to the cluster.
Common Mistakes
Preserving mismatched voicing inside a written assimilated word
❌ Одписао је дуг прошле године.
Incorrect spelling — д devoices before п, giving отписао.
✅ Отписао је дуг прошле године.
He wrote off the debt last year.
Respelling assimilation across a word boundary
❌ Чекам те кот куће.
Incorrect spelling — connected speech may devoice д, but the phrase is written код куће.
✅ Чекам те код куће.
I’m waiting for you at home.
Applying the usual spelling rule to д + с
❌ Потсети ме сутра.
Incorrect — standard spelling preserves д in подсети despite devoicing in speech.
✅ Подсети ме сутра ујутру.
Remind me tomorrow morning.
Writing в as ф whenever it devoices phonetically
❌ Офца је побегла из дворишта.
Incorrect — standard spelling is овца even when в sounds partly devoiced before ц.
✅ Овца је побегла из дворишта.
The sheep escaped from the yard.
Devoicing every final consonant
❌ Сад и сат изговарам потпуно исто у сваком контексту.
Incorrect — Serbian preserves the lexical д–т contrast; contextual assimilation is not universal final devoicing.
✅ Сад је један сат, а састанак почиње у два.
It is one o’clock now, and the meeting starts at two.
Key Takeaways
- Voicing assimilation is normally regressive: the second obstruent controls the first.
- Standard spelling often records alternation inside a word, as in отписати, свадба, and врапца.
- Across word boundaries, pronunciation may assimilate while spelling remains код куће, без тебе.
- Preserve д in standard дс/дш spellings such as председник, градски, одшетати.
- В behaves specially, and Serbian has no categorical spelling rule of word-final devoicing.
