When two noun phrases form one coordinated subject, Serbian must calculate person, number, and—where a participle or adjective exposes it—gender. The safest edited pattern is a preverbal coordination with resolved plural agreement: Милица и Павле су стигли. Yet experimental work on Serbian and neighboring BCMS standards also finds agreement with an individual conjunct, especially around postverbal subjects. That variation is grammatical structure, not random carelessness.
English speakers must separate two questions: which words constitute the subject, and which agreement strategy the predicate realizes. Rich case marking allows several orders, but the nearest noun is not automatically the controller.
For the single-subject baseline, first review the agreement principle and predicate agreement. Coordination adds the problem of resolving features from more than one conjunct.
One Coordinated Phrase, One Plural Controller
Bracket the subject as a unit: [Милица и Павле] су стигли. Two singular conjuncts joined by additive и normally denote a plural group, so the auxiliary is plural су and the l-participle is plural.
Милица и Павле су стигли раније да припреме салу.
Milica and Pavle arrived early to prepare the room.
With two feminine referents, resolved agreement is feminine plural:
Уредница и преводитељка су пажљиво провериле обе верзије уговора.
The editor and the translator carefully checked both versions of the contract.
With two neuter nouns, the plural participle is neuter:
Писмо и обавештење су стигла истом поштом.
The letter and the notice arrived in the same delivery.
For a mixed-gender human group, masculine plural is the ordinary resolved form. This is grammatical resolution, not a claim about the social importance of either referent.
Нова лекарка и искусни техничар су одмах позвани у операциону салу.
The new doctor and the experienced technician were called into the operating room immediately.
Person Resolution Outranks Simple Proximity
Coordinated pronouns reveal a person hierarchy. If the coordination includes first person, the predicate is first-person plural; without first person, a coordination including second person triggers second-person plural; otherwise it is third-person plural.
| Coordinated subject | Resolved person | Example predicate |
|---|---|---|
| ти и ја | first plural | радимо |
| ти и Ана | second plural | радите |
| Ана и Марко | third plural | раде |
Ти и ја радимо на различитим деловима истог извештаја.
You and I are working on different parts of the same report.
Ти и Невена сте већ потписале записник, зар не?
You and Nevena have already signed the minutes, haven't you? (addressing a woman)
The second sentence has second-person plural сте because ти is included, and feminine plural потписале because both referents are women. Agreement does not follow the closer third-person name Невена.
An overt pronoun is often unnecessary once the verb identifies person, but coordination can make contrast useful: и ти и ја, “both you and I.”
Mixed Gender and the Default Masculine Plural
When conjuncts have different grammatical genders, the most portable resolved form is masculine plural. This is especially useful in careful prose with a preverbal subject.
Одлука и саопштење су објављени на званичном сајту.
The decision and the announcement were published on the official website.
Here feminine одлука and neuter саопштење jointly license resolved masculine plural објављени. Serbian research nevertheless documents competition among resolved agreement, first-conjunct agreement, and last-conjunct agreement. Word order, the genders and numbers involved, animacy, and how speakers package the coordination all affect the result.
This means “always use masculine plural” is too broad as a description of actual Serbian. It remains a useful editing baseline when the intention is clearly one coordinated plural subject.
Postverbal Subjects and Closest-Conjunct Agreement
After the predicate, a speaker may calculate agreement before the whole coordination has been produced, or may package the first conjunct as the immediate controller and add another conjunct. Closest-conjunct forms are therefore attested, but their naturalness varies substantially by structure and speaker.
Compare a resolved editorial version with an attested closest-conjunct pattern:
На столу су остали два писма и једна свеска.
Two letters and one notebook were left on the table. (resolved masculine plural)
На столу су остала два писма и једна свеска.
Two letters and one notebook were left on the table. (closest-conjunct agreement with два писма)
In the second version, neuter plural остала agrees with the first postverbal conjunct два писма. This pattern is documented in production and is not well described as a simple “mistake.” It is, however, less predictable for learners and can invite an afterthought reading. In formal edited prose, resolved остали or a recast sentence is clearer.
После гласања изабрани су председница и два нова члана одбора.
After the vote, a chairwoman and two new board members were elected.
The predicate precedes the subject, yet resolved masculine plural изабрани су presents the following nouns as one group. Case marking keeps председница and члана interpretable, while agreement signals the intended coordination.
Linear Neighbors Are Not Necessarily Controllers
A noun inside a genitive or prepositional modifier cannot seize agreement merely by standing next to the verb.
Одлука чланова комисије усвојена је без расправе.
The committee members' decision was adopted without debate.
The nominative head одлука controls feminine singular усвојена је. Plural genitive чланова is embedded inside that noun phrase: [одлука [чланова комисије]]. By contrast, одлука и извештај are two coordinate nominative heads and trigger plural agreement.
Coordination of clauses also differs from coordination inside one subject:
Директор је одобрио план, а секретарка га је послала свим одељењима.
The director approved the plan, and the secretary sent it to all departments.
This contains two finite clauses, each with its own singular subject and agreement. The conjunction а does not turn директор and секретарка into one plural subject.
Finite and Non-finite Places Where Agreement Surfaces
Present-tense lexical verbs expose person and number but not gender: Ана и Иван долазе. Perfect, passive, conditional, and adjectival predicates expose gender through a participle or adjective: су дошли, били би позвани, спремни су. When a mixed-gender coordination feels cumbersome, a present-tense recast can remove the gender choice without changing the controller.
Правна служба и управа сада разматрају обе жалбе.
The legal department and management are now considering both appeals.
The present разматрају clearly marks plural but has no gender form. This is a legitimate editorial recast, not an evasion of agreement.
An Edited Passage
Уредница и правник су прегледали уговор. Затим су финансијска служба и управа провериле износе, а директор и заменица су одобрили коначну верзију. Сви су се сложили да документ може да се пошаље.
The editor and the lawyer reviewed the contract. Then the finance department and management checked the amounts, and the director and deputy approved the final version. Everyone agreed that the document could be sent.
The passage uses resolved masculine plural for mixed human pairs (прегледали, одобрили) and feminine plural for two feminine noun heads (служба и управа ... провериле). Each а coordinates clauses, not nouns across clause boundaries.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Expose the controller
Supply the perfect forms for Ана и Јелена, Ана и Милош, and писмо и обавештење with “arrived.” State which gender-resolution rule each answer uses.
Task 2: Edit a postverbal coordination
Rewrite the closest-conjunct pattern На полици је стајала мапа и приручник as an unambiguous careful-prose sentence. Move the coordination before the predicate and use resolved agreement: Мапа и приручник су стајали на полици.
Common Mistakes
Letting the closest genitive control the verb
❌ Одлука директора и његових саветника су објављене јутрос.
Incorrect—the head subject is singular одлука; the coordinated genitives only identify whose decision it is.
✅ Одлука директора и његових саветника објављена је јутрос.
The decision of the director and his advisers was published this morning.
Using singular agreement for an ordinary additive subject
❌ Ана и Милош је стигао истим возом.
Incorrect—the additive coordinated subject requires plural agreement.
✅ Ана и Милош су стигли истим возом.
Ana and Miloš arrived on the same train.
Ignoring person resolution
❌ Ти и ја сте добили исти задатак.
Incorrect—coordination containing ја requires first-person plural смо.
✅ Ти и ја смо добили исти задатак.
You and I received the same assignment. (at least one male referent or a mixed pair)
Treating every nearby conjunct form as the only correct one
❌ Изабрана је председница и два члана је једини могући образац.
Incorrect claim—conjunct agreement is variable, and resolved plural agreement is available and clearer here.
✅ Изабрани су председница и два члана одбора.
A chairwoman and two board members were elected.
Key Takeaways
- Resolve an ordinary preverbal additive coordination as plural; masculine plural is the portable default for mixed gender.
- First person outranks second and third; second outranks third in coordinated-person agreement.
- Serbian permits documented first- and last-conjunct patterns, especially postverbally, but no rule says “always agree with the nearest word.”
- Case marking permits order variation while constituent structure still determines which nouns can control agreement.
