The prefix по- is one of the most polysemous Serbian verb prefixes. It can help present complete consumption (појести), carve out a limited episode (поразговарати), or mark the onset of motion (потрчати, поћи). These verbs are perfective, but their boundaries are not the same: endpoint, limited duration, and beginning are three different lexical structures.
English often hides those differences under a simple verb or adds phrases such as eat up, talk for a while, and start running. Learn the whole Serbian verb and its context. There is no rule that every по- verb means finish doing X.
Three Central Readings
| Reading | Examples | Boundary selected |
|---|---|---|
| completion or affected portion | појести, попити | the relevant food or drink is consumed |
| delimited episode | поразговарати, прошетати, поспавати | the activity occupies one limited spell |
| inception | потрчати, полетети, поћи | movement begins or departure occurs |
The root’s meaning determines which readings are available. Speakers do not freely attach по- to any verb and then choose among all three.
Completion of a Relevant Portion
With verbs of consumption, по- commonly presents the food or drink as consumed up to the contextually relevant endpoint.
Јео је сендвич док је чекао воз.
He was eating a sandwich while he waited for the train.
Појео је сендвич пре него што је воз стигао.
He ate the sandwich up before the train arrived.
The imperfective sentence opens the eating activity. Perfective појео је says that the sandwich—or the portion treated as relevant—was consumed. The prefix does not mean that all food everywhere was exhausted.
Попила је лек са чашом воде и вратила се у кревет.
She took the medicine with a glass of water and went back to bed.
Here попити лек is a conventional expression for taking medicine in liquid or swallowed form. The lexical object and situation determine the English translation.
Completion with по- is not limited to consumption, but each verb must be verified. Почистити can mean clean up, while other roots use different prefixes for their ordinary completion partner. The family is lexical, not an algorithm.
Delimitation: One Bounded Spell
Delimitative по- packages an otherwise open activity as one episode of limited extent. The event need not achieve an external result or exhaust an object.
После састанка смо поразговарали о новом распореду.
After the meeting we talked for a while about the new schedule.
Хајде да прошетамо поред реке пре вечере.
Let’s take a walk by the river before dinner.
Поспавај мало пре ноћне смене.
Get a little sleep before the night shift.
Поразговарати does not mean finish all possible talking; прошетати does not entail reaching a destination; поспавати does not imply sleeping to complete satisfaction. The event is simply bounded as a manageable episode.
Expressions such as мало, кратко, пола сата often reinforce this reading:
Порадили смо у башти пола сата, а онда је почела киша.
We did some work in the garden for half an hour, and then it started raining.
The duration measures the limited episode. In contemporary Serbian, this use is conventional with particular verbs; it is less freely productive than a learner might expect from descriptions of some other Slavic languages.
Compare a genuinely open activity:
Радили смо у башти целог викенда.
We worked in the garden all weekend.
Imperfective радили смо presents time inside the work. Perfective порадили смо evaluates the work as one delimited contribution, often modest relative to a larger task.
Inception: The Boundary Is at the Beginning
An inceptive perfective presents entry into an activity. This is decisive evidence that perfective does not always mean completion.
Кад је угледао аутобус, потрчао је према станици.
When he saw the bus, he started running toward the stop.
Авион је полетео са закашњењем од четрдесет минута.
The plane took off forty minutes late.
Кренули смо рано, али смо тек после свитања пошли узбрдо.
We set out early, but only after dawn did we start uphill.
In потрчати, the relevant edge is the transition from not running to running. Полетети lexicalizes takeoff or beginning to fly. Поћи is highly lexicalized and should be learned with its principal forms пођем, пошао/пошла; it is not a mechanically prefixed form made during conversation.
After the onset, an imperfective can describe the continuing motion:
Потрчала је ка излазу, а затим је трчала све до паркинга.
She started running toward the exit and then ran all the way to the parking lot.
Perfective потрчала advances the narrative through the onset. Imperfective трчала opens the subsequent running interval.
The Same Root Can Form Different Networks
Do not assume that all по- derivatives stand in one relation to their bases.
| Family | Relation |
|---|---|
| јести — појести | activity versus consumption of the relevant portion |
| разговарати — поразговарати | open conversation versus one limited conversational episode |
| трчати — потрчати | running activity versus onset of running |
| кретати — покренути — покретати | movement, setting something in motion, and the reopened derived event |
The last family also changes valency: кретати can be intransitive, while покренути нешто often takes an accusative object meaning set something in motion or launch something. Its secondary imperfective покретати preserves that causative or launch meaning.
Удружење сваке јесени покреће нову хуманитарну акцију.
Every autumn the association launches a new charity drive.
This is not generic movement with imperfective aspect. Prefixation created a conventional lexical event, and suffixation reopened it for repetition.
Context Resolves Ambiguity
The same broad English paraphrase can conceal different boundaries. Compare two plans after lunch:
После ручка ћемо разговарати са правницом о свим спорним тачкама.
After lunch we will discuss all the disputed points with the lawyer.
После ручка ћемо поразговарати са правницом, па ћемо одлучити шта даље.
After lunch we will have a talk with the lawyer, then decide what to do next.
The first foregrounds the discussion activity and its subject matter. The second packages the consultation as one bounded episode preceding a decision. Neither form is automatically more polite or more past-like. See What the Perfective Means for other boundary types that do not amount to ordinary completion.
A Dialogue Where Completion Matters
— Могу ли да склоним тањир? — Сачекај, нисам још појела салату.
— May I clear the plate? — Wait, I have not finished the salad yet. (female speaker)
Only појела directly denies the relevant consumption boundary. Нисам још јела салату would normally say that no salad-eating has occurred yet, a different claim.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Classify the по- Meaning
Classify појести, поразговарати, потрчати, and покренути as completion, delimitation, inception, or lexical causation/launch.
Појести — довршити релевантну количину; поразговарати — ограничити разговор као једну епизоду; потрчати — почети трчати; покренути — ставити у покрет или започети организовану активност.
Answer: consume the relevant amount; delimit one conversation; start running; set in motion or launch an organized activity.
Task 2: Keep Time Constant
Describe one past afternoon first as an open walk, then as one bounded outing.
Шетали смо поред Дунава док је падао снег. — Прошетали смо поред Дунава и вратили се кући пре мрака.
We were walking beside the Danube while snow was falling. — We took a walk beside the Danube and returned home before dark.
Common Mistakes
Translating every по- verb as completed action
❌ „Потрчао је“ значи да је завршио трчање.
Incorrect—потрчати marks the beginning of running, not its completion.
✅ Потрчао је ка капији, али је после неколико корака стао.
He started running toward the gate but stopped after a few steps.
Treating a delimited episode as an achieved result
❌ „Поразговарали смо“ значи да смо решили сва питања.
Incorrect—поразговарати bounds the conversation but does not guarantee that every issue was resolved.
✅ Поразговарали смо о проблему, али још нисмо нашли решење.
We talked about the problem for a while, but we still have not found a solution.
Using perfective as an actual ongoing present
❌ Сада поједем ручак; позваћу те касније.
Incorrect for an action unfolding now—perfective поједем cannot express the actual ongoing present here.
✅ Сада једем ручак; позваћу те касније.
I am eating lunch now; I will call you later.
Erasing a lexical change in a derived imperfective
❌ Покретати је само дужи облик глагола кретати.
Incorrect—покретати commonly means set in motion, launch, or initiate repeatedly or in progress.
✅ Министарство покреће програм подршке малим предузећима.
The ministry is launching a support program for small businesses.
Key Takeaways
- по- can mark consumption to an endpoint, a limited episode, an onset, or a lexicalized result.
- A delimitative event is bounded without necessarily being completed toward an external goal.
- Inceptive по- places the relevant boundary at the beginning.
- Valency and lexical meaning can change, as in кретати — покренути — покретати.
- Interpret and learn whole verb families; never translate the prefix in isolation.
