Aspect with Time-Span and Duration Phrases

Time expressions are among the best clues for choosing Serbian aspect. A bare duration such as три сата measures how long an activity continued; за три сата often measures the time needed to reach a result; током три сата places events inside a time span; and до три сата identifies an endpoint. These phrases guide aspect, but they do not replace the meaning of the verb. Their case forms are covered more fully under accusative time expressions and genitive time and dates.

English often translates both три сата and за три сата with phrases containing for or in. Serbian keeps their event structures distinct through case, preposition, and aspect.

Bare accusative durations measure activity

A time noun or numeral phrase can stand without a preposition in the accusative to answer колико дуго? “for how long?” Imperfective verbs fit naturally because they expose an event's internal duration.

Маја је разговарала с клијентом готово два сата.

Maja talked with the client for almost two hours.

Поправљали смо кров целу недељу, али нас је киша стално прекидала.

We worked on repairing the roof for the whole week, but the rain kept interrupting us.

Два сата and целу недељу measure time spent in the activities. The second sentence does not assert a finished roof. Masculine цео дан and feminine целу недељу show that the agreeing adjective appears in the accusative form required by the duration expression.

Use the same lexical situation to compare process and result:

Никола је писао предлог три вечери и још није био задовољан.

Nikola worked on the proposal for three evenings and was still not satisfied.

The bare duration combines with imperfective писао. A completion claim requires a different construction.

💡
Test a bare duration with колико дуго? If it measures time spent inside the event, imperfective is normally the first choice.

За + accusative measures time to a boundary

With a bounded event, за + accusative time phrase commonly means “in/within the time it took to finish.” It answers за колико времена?

Никола је написао предлог за три вечери и послао га управном одбору.

Nikola wrote the proposal in three evenings and sent it to the management board.

Perfective написао asserts a completed proposal; за три вечери measures the interval required to reach that endpoint.

Ватрогасци су угасили пожар за мање од сат времена.

The firefighters put out the fire in less than an hour.

Апликација је обрадила све податке за четрдесет секунди.

The application processed all the data in forty seconds.

The bounded predicates угасили and обрадила make the completion reading unambiguous. За governs the accusative, although numeral phrases can hide the case ending on the noun.

With future reference, за + time can also mean “after/from now,” not only “time required.”

За два дана ћемо објавити коначне резултате.

We will publish the final results in two days.

Here за два дана locates publication two days from now. Compare Објавићемо резултате за два сата: depending on context, it may mean that publication will occur two hours from now or that completing the publication task will take two hours. Add од сада “from now” or биће нам потребна “we will need” when the distinction matters.

Током + genitive locates events within a span

Током governs the genitive and means “during” or “over the course of.” It supplies a temporal container; it does not itself guarantee that an event filled the whole span or reached completion.

Током састанка је неколико пута проверавала телефон.

During the meeting she checked her phone several times.

Током зиме смо обнављали стару кућу на селу.

During the winter we were renovating an old house in the country.

Imperfective проверавала and обнављали present repetition and process within the interval. Perfective is possible when one bounded event is merely located inside that span:

Током конференције смо потписали уговор с новим партнером.

During the conference we signed a contract with a new partner.

The signing need not occupy the whole conference. Током конференције answers “when within a larger interval?”, while perfective потписали gives one completed foreground event.

Током therefore does not select imperfective mechanically. It combines with whichever aspect matches the event placed inside its genitive time frame.

Целог + genitive highlights the whole interval

A genitive phrase with an agreeing totality word can emphasize that a state, nonoccurrence, or activity held throughout an interval: целог дана, целе ноћи, целе зиме.

Целог поподнева је дувао јак северни ветар.

A strong north wind blew throughout the afternoon.

Целе ноћи нисмо чули ниједан аутомобил.

All night we did not hear a single car.

This genitive use overlaps in translation with bare accusative duration. The difference is one of construal and construction: цео дан је радио measures the amount of time spent working, while целог дана је радио frames the whole day as the interval throughout which the situation held. Both can be natural, and aspect still depends on the predicate.

Целог месеца смо чекали одговор, а последњег дана смо га коначно добили.

We waited for a reply throughout the month, and finally received it on the last day.

Imperfective чекали fills the interval; perfective добили marks the endpoint event. The two views cooperate rather than compete.

До + genitive sets a deadline or terminal point

До governs the genitive and gives the boundary up to which a situation lasts or by which a result must be attained.

Остајем у канцеларији до шест сати.

I am staying in the office until six o'clock.

Завршићу табелу до шест сати.

I will finish the table by six o'clock.

With imperfective остајем, the situation extends up to the endpoint. With perfective завршићу, the endpoint is a deadline before or at which completion occurs. English distinguishes until and by; Serbian до can express both, and the predicate helps disambiguate.

До краја недеље ћемо прикупљати коментаре, а онда ћемо објавити нову верзију.

We will collect comments until the end of the week, and then publish the new version.

The first imperfective event continues toward the deadline; the second perfective event advances the sequence.

Endpoint expressions without до also favor a bounded reading: пре ручка, чим стигнем, најкасније у пет. They do not force perfective, but they often make an attained result relevant.

Compatibility tests

When choosing aspect, try these questions:

TestLikely constructionTypical viewpoint
Колико дуго?bare accusative: два сатаactivity/process
За колико времена?за + accusativetime to completion
Када унутар периода?током + genitiveeither aspect
До када?до + genitivecontinuation or deadline
Can “but did not finish” follow?bare duration + imperfectiveendpoint not asserted

Уређивала је снимак четири сата, али га није завршила.

She worked on editing the recording for four hours but did not finish it.

The continuation explicitly confirms that уређивала did not assert completion. Compare:

Уредила је снимак за четири сата, па смо га исте вечери објавили.

She edited the recording in four hours, so we published it that same evening.

The perfective version explicitly supplies the completion that makes publication the next step. Publication could also follow an imperfective clause, but then completion would come from discourse inference rather than from the verb itself.

These are strong tendencies, not equations

Some perfective verbs delimit a span rather than culminate in a produced object. They can occur with a bare duration.

После ручка је одспавао два сата и пробудио се одморан.

After lunch he slept for two hours and woke up rested.

Perfective одспавао packages a limited sleep episode whose duration is два сата. Similarly, порадио је сат времена means “he did some work for an hour.” These lexicalized perfectives show why the adverbial is a diagnostic clue, not an automatic aspect generator.

💡
Learn what boundary the perfective verb itself supplies. With написати, the boundary is a completed text; with одспавати, it is a delimited sleep episode, so a bare duration is natural.

A practical dialogue

— Колико дуго си сређивала презентацију? — Три сата. — А за колико си је завршила? — За укупно пет сати.

— How long did you work on the presentation? — Three hours. — And how long did it take you to finish it? — Five hours in total.

Сређивала asks for activity duration. Завршила plus за колико asks for time to the final boundary. The English phrase how long covers both questions; Serbian keeps them separate.

Common Mistakes

Omitting за when measuring time to completion

❌ Завршили су анализу три дана.

Incorrect for ‘finished in three days’ — the bare duration measures an activity, not time to completion.

✅ Завршили су анализу за три дана.

They completed the analysis in three days.

Adding за to a simple activity duration

❌ Разговарали смо за два сата, али ништа нисмо решили.

Incorrect for ‘talked for two hours’ — use a bare duration for time spent in the activity.

✅ Разговарали смо два сата, али ништа нисмо решили.

We talked for two hours but resolved nothing.

Giving током an accusative complement

❌ Током целу недељу падала је киша.

Incorrect case — ‘током’ governs the genitive.

✅ Током целе недеље падала је киша.

It rained throughout the whole week.

Assuming током forces imperfective

❌ Током изложбе није могуће употребити свршени глагол.

Incorrect — a bounded event can be located within a longer temporal frame.

✅ Током изложбе кустос је најавио нову поставку.

During the exhibition, the curator announced a new display.

Practice

Task 1: Choose the time frame

Complete four contexts with a bare duration, за + accusative, током + genitive, or до + genitive: time spent translating, time needed to finish a translation, one event during a conference, and a submission deadline. Explain the case in each phrase.

Task 2: Keep one lexical situation

Using писати / написати, write one sentence answering Колико дуго?, one answering За колико времена?, and one contrasting activity up to a deadline with a later completed result. Do not change aspect merely because the tense changes.

Key Takeaways

  • A bare accusative duration measures time inside an activity; за + accusative commonly measures time to a boundary.
  • Током + genitive locates either bounded or unbounded events within a larger span.
  • Целог + genitive frames a situation as holding throughout an interval; до + genitive sets a terminal point or deadline.
  • Time phrases provide compatibility tests, not exceptionless rules: lexical event structure still matters.
