What the Imperfective Means

The imperfective does not mean “unfinished” in every sentence. It presents a situation without making its outer boundary the main assertion: the speaker may look inside an ongoing process, describe duration, establish a habit, or name an activity in general. Whether the real-world action later ends is a separate question.

Process: viewing an event from inside

Imperfective is the natural viewpoint for an action in progress. In the past, it often supplies the background during which a bounded event occurs.

Спремала сам вечеру када је нестала струја.

I was making dinner when the power went out. (female speaker)

Док су деца спавала, родитељи су тихо разговарали у кухињи.

While the children were sleeping, the parents were talking quietly in the kitchen.

The imperfectives спремати, спавати, разговарати expose internal time. They do not assert that dinner was finished, that the sleeping reached an endpoint, or that the conversation achieved a result.

This viewpoint is ordinary in the actual present:

Тренутно разговарам с клијентом; позваћу те касније.

I'm talking to a client right now; I'll call you later.

Serbian has no obligatory progressive construction corresponding to English be + -ing. The imperfective present itself can describe an action underway.

Duration without an asserted endpoint

A duration phrase such as два сата often combines with an imperfective when the sentence measures how long the activity occupied the subject. The endpoint is not included in the assertion.

Два сата смо тражили кључеве по целом стану.

We looked for the keys all over the apartment for two hours.

Цело поподне је поправљао бицикл, али га није поправио.

He worked on repairing the bicycle all afternoon, but he didn't get it fixed.

The second sentence is not contradictory. Imperfective поправљао је reports activity directed toward repair; perfective није поправио denies the achieved result. English uses context to build this contrast, whereas Serbian marks it directly in the verbs.

Compare elapsed time with time-to-result:

Читала је књигу три дана.

She spent three days reading the book. (duration of activity; completion not asserted)

Прочитала је књигу за три дана.

She read the book in three days. (completed result within that time)

💡
Два сата measures an activity and strongly favors imperfective; за два сата often measures the time needed to reach an endpoint and strongly favors perfective. The adverbial does not mechanically choose aspect, but it reveals the intended viewpoint.

Habit, repetition, and characteristic behavior

Imperfective is the unmarked choice for open-ended habits and repeated activities, especially when no individual completion is being counted.

После ручка обично пијемо кафу на тераси.

After lunch we usually drink coffee on the terrace.

Као студенткиња радила је викендом у малој књижари.

As a university student, she used to work weekends in a small bookshop.

Repetition does not automatically require imperfective. A series can be viewed as repeated bounded achievements, particularly with сваки пут, кад год, or a stated number.

Кад год заврши смену, пошаље ми кратку поруку.

Whenever she finishes her shift, she sends me a short message. (each finishing and sending is bounded)

Thus понављање and несвршеност overlap, but they are not synonyms. Ask whether the sentence presents a recurring activity as a habit or counts each complete occurrence.

General facts, abilities, and occupations

The imperfective can name an activity without locating one token of it in time. It appears in statements about interests, skills, jobs, and what a device or institution normally does.

Моја сестра преводи стручне текстове са немачког.

My sister translates specialist texts from German.

Ова апликација чува копије докумената у облаку.

This app stores copies of documents in the cloud.

Да ли читаш научну фантастику?

Do you read science fiction?

These are not necessarily events happening at the speech moment. The present imperfective also supports generic or characteristic readings, much as English simple present does.

Phase verbs require an open process

Verbs meaning begin, continue, and stop normally select an imperfective complement because they locate a phase inside an activity. Both да + present and the infinitive are standard Serbian.

Почела је да пише докторску дисертацију прошлог септембра.

She began writing her doctoral dissertation last September.

После кратке паузе наставили смо радити.

After a short break, we continued working. (standard infinitive)

Perfective написати presents the whole writing event, so почети да написати is impossible on two grounds: the да-construction needs a finite present form, and a phase verb needs an internally viewable imperfective situation. Learn more on the phase verbs page.

Negation: activity versus missing result

Negated imperfective often says that the activity did not occur at all, was not underway, or was not habitual. Negated perfective commonly denies successful completion.

Нисам јутрос читао вести.

I didn't read the news this morning. (male speaker; no reading activity is asserted)

Нисам прочитао све вести јер сам журио.

I didn't read all the news through because I was in a hurry. (male speaker; completion is denied)

The contrast is pragmatic rather than an absolute formula. Context can make either negation appropriate, but the aspect tells the listener whether the relevant issue is engagement in the activity or attainment of its boundary.

Tense and mood do not erase imperfective meaning

Imperfective occurs in past, present, future, conditional, and imperative forms. Its viewpoint remains open even when time or mood changes.

Сутра ћу цео дан уређивати фотографије.

Tomorrow I'll be editing photos all day.

Радо бих путовала возом када би веза била бржа.

I would gladly travel by train if the connection were faster. (female speaker)

Пиши ми кад стигнеш, чак и ако буде касно.

Write to me when you arrive, even if it's late. (keep in touch / process-oriented request)

A narrative where imperfective is necessary

Седео сам у чекаоници и листао часопис када ме је медицинска сестра позвала.

I was sitting in the waiting room and leafing through a magazine when the nurse called me. (male speaker)

The sitting and leafing form a background already in progress; позвала advances the narrative with one bounded event. Replacing седео/листао with perfectives would create separate transitions—sitting down or leafing through to an endpoint—rather than the intended background scene.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Process or result

Use писати/написати to say “I wrote for two hours, but I did not finish the email.” Explain why the affirmative and negative clauses need different aspectual viewpoints.

Task 2: Build a background

Write a two-clause past sentence in which one person was cooking when the doorbell rang. Mark the imperfective background and the perfective event that interrupts it.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сада напишем поруку, сачекај тренутак.

Incorrect for an action currently in progress — perfective напишем cannot mean ‘I am writing now.’

✅ Сада пишем поруку, сачекај тренутак.

I'm writing a message now; wait a moment.

❌ Почела је да напише извештај.

Incorrect — почети opens an internal phase and therefore selects imperfective пише in this construction.

✅ Почела је да пише извештај.

She began writing the report.

❌ Читао сам књигу за два дана.

Incorrect for the intended completed time-to-result reading — за два дана calls for perfective прочитао.

✅ Прочитао сам књигу за два дана.

I read the book in two days. (male speaker)

❌ Несвршени глагол значи да радња никада није завршена.

Incorrect — imperfective leaves the endpoint outside the assertion; the real-world action may still have ended.

✅ Јуче смо кували вечеру, а у девет смо све склонили.

Yesterday we cooked dinner, and at nine we put everything away.

Key Takeaways

  • Imperfective presents internal development, duration, habit, or an activity in general.
  • It does not claim that an action remains forever unfinished; it simply does not make the boundary central.
  • Repeated bounded events can still be perfective, so repetition alone is not a mechanical rule.
  • Phase verbs select imperfective complements because beginnings, continuations, and endings target internal stages of a process.
