Choosing a Serbian motion verb in connected discourse requires more than deciding “imperfective or perfective.” You must identify the relevant boundary, decide whether movement is ongoing or repeated, choose any manner that matters, and determine whether the mover travels alone or conveys someone or something. Only then can you select ићи, отићи, долазити, дотрчати, донети, or another family member.
This page assumes that you know the prefix system. The derivational architecture is summarized under aspect, prefixes, and directional verbs; here the goal is to make narrative decisions sentence by sentence.
A four-part decision test
Before choosing a motion verb, ask:
- Endpoint: Is the story inside the movement, or has departure, entry, crossing, or arrival been attained?
- Repetition: Is this one trip, a habitual route, or several bounded trips?
- Manner and conveyance: Is walking, running, flying, driving, carrying, or accompanying relevant?
- Discourse role: Is the movement background for another event, or a foreground step that advances the story?
English go and come do not answer all four questions. A Serbian sentence often chooses a more specific lexical and aspectual package.
Habitual routes: profile the routine
For a regular route, imperfective ићи is the neutral general verb. It can cover walking or unspecified transport unless context adds a manner.
Сваког радног дана Ивана иде из Земуна у центар и враћа се око шест.
Every workday Ivana goes from Zemun to the city center and returns around six.
The route is habitual; no single departure or arrival is foregrounded. If the recurring endpoint matters, a secondary imperfective such as долазити or одлазити makes that boundary part of every repeated trip.
Ивана понедељком долази у канцеларију пре осталих, а петком одлази раније.
On Mondays Ivana arrives at the office before the others, and on Fridays she leaves earlier.
Долази profiles repeated arrivals toward the office; одлази profiles repeated departures. Both are imperfective even though each real-world trip contains a boundary.
Manner can replace the general verb when it explains the routine:
Кад је лепо време, Милош вози бицикл до факултета; зими обично иде аутобусом.
When the weather is nice, Miloš cycles to the university; in winter he usually goes by bus.
Serbian возити бицикл names the vehicle activity, while ићи аутобусом uses instrumental for means. Habituality is compatible with either lexical choice.
Motion in progress: put the camera inside the trip
When another event interrupts or overlaps the movement, an imperfective presents motion from within.
Док је ишла ка станици, Соња је разговарала с братом телефоном.
While Sonja was on her way toward the station, she was talking to her brother on the phone.
Ишла је ка станици does not assert arrival. The preposition ка + dative gives orientation toward a goal, while imperfective aspect keeps the trip open.
Трчали смо према излазу кад се огласио други аларм.
We were running toward the exit when the second alarm sounded.
Imperfective трчали смо adds manner and background; perfective огласио се supplies the new foreground event. By contrast, истрчали смо кроз излаз would assert the outward crossing and would change both the directional choice and the timing.
Conveyance likewise remains lexically distinct:
Док је носила кутију низ степенице, Јелени је зазвонио телефон.
While Jelena was carrying the box down the stairs, her phone rang.
The object is physically carried, so носити is appropriate. A person being accompanied would select водити, and transport by car would select возити. See carrying and transport for that participant-based choice.
One completed trip: choose the relevant boundary
A completed movement is not a single semantic category. The story may foreground setting off, leaving a place, entering, reaching a goal, or returning.
Нина је отишла из редакције нешто после седам.
Nina left the editorial office shortly after seven.
Нина је стигла у архив пре него што су закључали главни улаз.
Nina reached the archive before they locked the main entrance.
Отишла foregrounds departure away from the reference place. Стигла foregrounds successful arrival at the destination. English can use went for the whole trip, but Serbian narration often names whichever boundary matters.
Чим је ушла у читаоницу, пришла је дежурној библиотекарки.
As soon as she entered the reading room, she approached the librarian on duty.
Perfective ушла and пришла form two successive foreground steps. Their government remains lexical: у читаоницу is accusative after у for entry, while библиотекарки is bare dative after прићи.
Secondary imperfectives: repeat or unfold a directed path
Secondary imperfectives retain a directional path but reopen it for repetition or process. Compare доћи : долазити, ући : улазити, and донети : доносити.
Гости су долазили један по један и остављали капуте у предсобљу.
The guests arrived one by one and left their coats in the hallway.
Долазили presents a series of arrivals distributed over the guests. A single plural perfective дошли су would package the group's arrival as one bounded narrative fact.
Док су посетиоци улазили у салу, оркестар је још увек увежбавао последњу нумеру.
While the visitors were entering the hall, the orchestra was still rehearsing the final number.
Here улазили profiles entry as an unfolding plural process and supplies background. The prefix's direction remains present, but the secondary imperfective prevents the clause from acting as one compact foreground boundary.
Током јутра курири су доносили узорке из три различите лабораторије.
Throughout the morning couriers brought samples from three different laboratories.
Repeated transfers use доносили. If one courier completed one delivery, донео је узорак would be the bounded choice.
One narrative retold three ways
The same morning can be organized around completed steps, internal motion, or a recurring route.
Version 1: bounded foreground
Јелена је изашла из куће у седам, отишла до станице и ушла у први аутобус који је стигао.
Jelena left the house at seven, went to the stop, and boarded the first bus that arrived.
The perfectives изашла, отишла, ушла, стигао create a chain of attained boundaries. Direction changes at each step: exit, movement away/to the stop, entry, arrival.
Version 2: narrative zoom
Док је Јелена излазила из куће и журила ка станици, почела је да пада јака киша.
As Jelena was leaving the house and hurrying toward the stop, heavy rain began to fall.
Secondary imperfective излазила and imperfective журила put the reader inside the movement. The rain onset becomes the foreground event. This is an aspectual and discourse change; the source and goal directions remain.
Version 3: habitual route
Док је радила у старој фирми, Јелена је сваког јутра излазила у седам, одлазила до исте станице и улазила у аутобус број осамдесет три.
While she worked at her old company, Jelena used to leave at seven every morning, go to the same stop, and board bus number eighty-three.
The same directional paths recur as a routine, so the secondary imperfectives are natural. This is not simply Version 1 moved into the past: all three versions are past, but their viewpoints differ.
The narrative foregrounding page develops this organization beyond motion verbs.
Manner is a lexical choice, not an aspect choice
Aspect cannot tell the listener whether someone walked, ran, flew, drove, carried, or led. Select manner independently.
Кад је чуо последњи позив, Лука је дотрчао до излаза за укрцавање.
When he heard the final call, Luka ran up to the boarding gate.
После слетања су путнике аутобусом превезли до терминала.
After landing, they transported the passengers to the terminal by bus.
Both movements are bounded. Дотрчао adds running manner; превезли adds vehicle transport and a direct object. Replacing either with a generic form may remain grammatical but removes information the narrative treats as relevant.
English go, come, take, and bring
English deictic verbs do not map one-to-one onto Serbian families. Доћи and its relatives orient movement toward a relevant goal; отићи and одлазити orient it away. English take may be однети for a carried object, одвести for a person or animal, or a vehicle-family одвести with forms such as одвезем, одвезао.
Понела је документа, одвела сина у школу и одвезла колегиницу на аеродром.
She took the documents with her, took her son to school, and drove her colleague to the airport.
One English verb becomes three Serbian verbs because the conveyance relations differ. Their perfective viewpoint is only one part of the selection.
Common Mistakes
Using a bounded arrival for motion still in progress
❌ Управо сам стигао на станицу, али сам још два километра далеко.
Incorrect — ‘стигао’ asserts arrival, which conflicts with still being two kilometers away.
✅ Управо идем ка станици, али сам још два километра далеко.
I am on my way toward the station, but I am still two kilometers away.
Using one perfective trip for a habitual route
❌ Док је студирала, Мира је сваког дана отишла пешке на факултет.
Incorrect for a neutral past routine — one bounded ‘отишла’ does not present the repeated route.
✅ Док је студирала, Мира је сваког дана ишла пешке на факултет.
While she was a student, Mira walked to the university every day.
Ignoring the participant being conveyed
❌ Курир је водио пакет у лабораторију.
Incorrect — a package is carried or transported, not led or accompanied.
✅ Курир је носио пакет у лабораторију.
The courier was carrying the package to the laboratory.
Treating a prefixed verb as interchangeable with its base
❌ Док је ушла у салу, разговарала је телефоном.
Incorrect for overlapping background motion — perfective ‘ушла’ presents the entry boundary as attained.
✅ Док је улазила у салу, разговарала је телефоном.
While she was entering the hall, she was talking on the phone.
Practice
Task 1: Retell a commute
Describe one person's trip to work three times: as a regular route, as motion interrupted by a phone call, and as a chain of completed departure, entry, and arrival events. Keep the places constant so that only viewpoint and discourse organization change.
Task 2: Diagnose the choice
For ишла, отишла, долазила, дотрчала, доносила, identify endpoint, repetition, manner/conveyance, and discourse role. Then give an English translation and explain which Serbian information the English verb leaves implicit.
Key Takeaways
- Motion narratives require decisions about endpoint, repetition, manner, participant structure, and foregrounding.
- Simple imperfectives profile routes or movement in progress; perfectives foreground attained boundaries; secondary imperfectives repeat or unfold directed paths.
- Direction and manner are lexical meanings, not automatic consequences of aspect.
- English go, come, take, and bring each cover several Serbian motion families.
