Serbian directional verbs are built where three meanings meet: manner (walking, running, flying, driving, carrying), path (toward, away, in, out, across), and aspect (a bounded path or an open, repeated process). A prefix often adds a path and simultaneously creates a perfective verb; a secondary imperfective can then reopen that same path for repetition or internal duration.
This is a synthesis of the derivational system. For the basic forms and their destination cases, see basic motion with ићи and prefixed directional verbs. For choosing among these families in connected narration and habitual routes, see aspect in motion narratives.
Direction is meaning, not decoration
A prefix does more than signal “completed.” It contributes a spatial path that remains visible in both members of an aspectual pair.
| Path | Typical prefix | Bounded example | Secondary imperfective |
|---|---|---|---|
| reach / come to | до- | доћи, донети | долазити, доносити |
| depart / take away | од- | отићи, однети | одлазити, односити |
| enter | у- | ући, унети | улазити, уносити |
| exit | из- | изаћи, изнети | излазити, износити |
| cross / transfer | пре- | прећи, пренети | прелазити, преносити |
| approach | при- | прићи, притрчати | прилазити, притрчавати |
Воз је ушао у тунел, а десет минута касније изашао на другу страну планине.
The train entered the tunnel and came out on the other side of the mountain ten minutes later.
Perfective ушао and изашао present two attained boundaries. Their prefixes specify which boundaries; perfectivity alone would not tell us “in” versus “out.”
Док смо чекали ручак, гости су стално улазили у кухињу и излазили из ње.
While we were waiting for lunch, the guests kept going into the kitchen and coming back out of it.
Secondary imperfectives улазили and излазили retain those paths but present repeated movements. The difference is therefore ући : улазити, not an opposition between a prefixed and an unprefixed meaning.
One path across several manners of motion
The same prefix can combine with different motion bases. The resulting verbs share direction, but not manner or participant structure.
| Manner / conveyance | Bounded arrival | Repeated or unfolding arrival | Core contrast |
|---|---|---|---|
| general going | доћи | долазити | come, mode unspecified |
| running | дотрчати | дотрчавати | arrive running |
| flying | долетети | долетати | arrive by flying |
| carried object | донети | доносити | bring something carried |
| led/accompanied animate | довести (доведем, довео) | доводити | bring a person or animal |
| vehicle delivery | довести (довезем, довезао) | довозити | bring by vehicle when vehicle is salient |
Милица је дотрчала до капије чим је чула звоно.
Milica ran up to the gate as soon as she heard the bell.
Роде долећу у ово село сваког пролећа.
Storks fly back to this village every spring.
Добављач нам довози поврће уторком и петком.
The supplier delivers vegetables to us on Tuesdays and Fridays.
English come can translate all three arrivals, but Serbian can retain manner in the verb. Дотрчала packages one completed run to the goal; долећу and довози present recurring arrivals.
The carrying and transport page explains how participant type distinguishes носити, водити, возити and their directional families.
How the aspectual series is built
A common derivational sequence is:
| Stage | Example | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| simple imperfective | носити | carrying/wearing without a specified bounded path |
| prefixed perfective | донети | carry so that the object reaches the relevant goal |
| secondary imperfective | доносити | that same arrival path as process or repetition |
Ана носи узорке у лабораторију.
Ana is carrying samples to the laboratory.
Ана је донела узорке пре почетка анализе.
Ana brought the samples before the analysis began.
Ана је целе недеље доносила нове узорке.
Ana brought new samples throughout the week.
The first clause describes carrying along a route. The second asserts arrival with the samples. The third repeats or stretches that same arrival-type transfer across a longer interval. Secondary imperfectivization is treated systematically on the secondary imperfectives page.
With ићи, the morphology is less transparent: доћи : долазити, отићи : одлазити, ући : улазити, изаћи : излазити. These must be learned as families, not generated by attaching one suffix to ићи.
Обично одлазимо око шест, али смо јуче отишли тек после осам.
We usually leave around six, but yesterday we did not leave until after eight.
The shared path is departure. Одлазимо presents the routine; отишли identifies yesterday's bounded departure.
Parallel-looking families have gaps
Motion derivation is productive, but not perfectly regular. Sound changes, older stems, frequency, and lexicalization produce gaps and asymmetries. There is no safe rule “prefix + base + one imperfective suffix” that predicts every standard verb.
| Meaning | Perfective | Imperfective partner | Why it must be learned |
|---|---|---|---|
| go out | изаћи | излазити | stem alternation, not из-ићи |
| bring a thing | донети | доносити | different present/infinitive stems |
| bring a person | довести | доводити | animate conveyance family |
| fly across | прелетети | прелетати | secondary imperfective formation differs |
Авион је прелетео Алпе пре заласка сунца.
The plane flew across the Alps before sunset.
Војни авиони су данима прелетали изнад обале.
Military aircraft flew over the coast for days.
Here прелетети can describe one completed traversal, while прелетати describes repeated traversals. The complement also matters: прелетети Алпе encodes crossing a bounded path; прелетати изнад обале profiles repeated flights over an area.
Lexicalization changes more than aspect
Some formally directional verbs acquire established nonspatial meanings. Their aspectual partners remain real, but learners cannot recover the whole meaning from prefix and motion base alone.
Влада је увела нова правила, а инспектори сада уводе фирме у нови систем.
The government introduced new rules, and inspectors are now bringing companies into the new system.
Увести : уводити can mean physically lead in, but also “introduce/establish.” Similarly, извести : изводити may mean lead out, perform, or carry out; превести : преводити may mean transport across but very commonly means translate.
Превела је уговор на српски, а затим је превезла потписане примерке у архиву.
She translated the contract into Serbian, then transported the signed copies to the archive.
Превела belongs to превести : преводити “translate,” while превезла belongs to превести : превозити “transport.” The infinitives coincide, but the l-participles and imperfective partners expose distinct lexical networks.
Prefixes do not all create the same event
Even when two verbs are perfective, their prefixes can impose different boundaries. Compare reaching, entering, and crossing.
Пас је притрчао деци, затим је утрчао у двориште и претрчао преко травњака.
The dog ran up to the children, then ran into the yard and across the lawn.
Each verb is bounded, yet the boundaries differ: approach a goal, cross an entrance, traverse a surface. Reducing all three prefixes to “make perfective” loses the central lexical information.
Some prefixes also yield conventional Aktionsart meanings rather than a simple directional pair. Потрчати means “start running,” while протрчати often means “run through/past.” These verbs belong in the wider lexical network and may lack a secondary imperfective with exactly the meaning a learner expects.
Common Mistakes
Treating every prefix as a pure perfective marker
❌ Глаголи „ући“ и „изаћи“ разликују се само по томе што су свршени.
Incorrect — both are perfective, but one encodes entry and the other exit.
✅ Ушли смо на главни улаз, а изашли кроз двориште.
We entered through the main entrance and left through the courtyard.
Using a bounded arrival for a route that is still in progress
❌ Авион је долетео у Београд, али још није стигао.
Incorrect — ‘долетео’ presents arrival in Belgrade as attained, so it conflicts with ‘has not arrived yet.’
✅ Авион лети ка Београду, али још није стигао.
The plane is flying toward Belgrade but has not arrived yet.
Predicting the secondary imperfective mechanically
❌ Сваког петка доићемо код баке.
Incorrect — the repeated imperfective partner of ‘доћи’ is ‘долазити’, not a form built mechanically on ‘доћи’.
✅ Сваког петка долазимо код баке.
We come to Grandma's every Friday.
Confusing transport with translation
❌ Курир је превео пакете у складиште.
Incorrect for physical transport — ‘превео’ is normally understood as ‘translated’; use ‘превезао’.
✅ Курир је превезао пакете у складиште.
The courier transported the packages to the warehouse.
Practice
Task 1: Build a directional family
Starting with the path “out,” supply one bounded and one secondary-imperfective verb for (a) general going, (b) running, and (c) carrying an object. Then write one sentence with a single completed exit and one with repeated exits.
Task 2: Separate four layers
Analyze донела, долетали, превози, and уводе for (a) base manner or conveyance, (b) prefix/path, (c) grammatical aspect, and (d) any lexicalized meaning. State explicitly which information cannot be predicted from the prefix alone.
Key Takeaways
- Prefixes contribute paths such as arrival, departure, entry, exit, and crossing; they do not merely add completion.
- A prefixed perfective presents a bounded path, while a secondary imperfective reopens that same path for process or repetition.
- Walking, running, flying, carrying, leading, and vehicle transport form partly parallel but not fully predictable families.
- Stem alternations and lexicalized meanings make dictionary learning essential.
