Choosing aspect is not choosing a Serbian translation of English simple versus progressive tense. First choose the lexical event, then decide whether to view it from inside—as process, habit, or background—or as one bounded whole with a relevant endpoint.
This procedure will solve most B1 choices. It also tells you when to stop guessing and verify the verb in a dictionary, because Serbian aspect is a lexical network rather than a mechanical two-column tense paradigm.
Step 0: Verify the Lexical Event
Before comparing aspect, make sure the two verbs can describe the same event. Писати — написати can contrast process and completed creation of a text. Потписати means sign, so it is not merely another perfective way to say finish writing.
Пишем извештај о прошлогодишњим резултатима.
I am writing a report on last year’s results.
Кад напишем извештај, послаћу га целом тиму.
When I finish writing the report, I will send it to the whole team.
Директор ће потписати извештај после правне провере.
The director will sign the report after legal review.
The first two clauses can hold report creation constant and change viewpoint. The third names a different event. If a prefix changes participants, direction, or result, learn that lexical contribution before deciding aspect.
The diagnostic is developed further in Aspectual Pairs Are Not Synonyms.
Step 1: Is the Event Open from the Inside?
Choose imperfective as the strong default for an activity in progress, an unrestricted habit, duration without an asserted endpoint, simultaneous background, or manner.
Сада читам уговор и подвлачим нејасне делове.
I am reading the contract now and underlining unclear sections.
Обично читам услове пре него што прихватим понуду.
I usually read the terms before accepting an offer.
Читала је уговор скоро два сата.
She read the contract for almost two hours. (completion not asserted)
Time inside the event is central in all three. English present progressive, simple present, and simple past translate with the same Serbian aspect because tense and viewpoint are separate choices.
Step 2: Is One Boundary or Result Asserted?
Choose perfective as the strong default when the clause commits to one completion, successful attainment, transition, or delimited occurrence.
Прочитао сам уговор и послао адвокату три питања.
I read the contract through and sent the lawyer three questions. (male speaker)
Отворила је прозор чим је ушла у собу.
She opened the window as soon as she entered the room.
За пола сата решили смо оба проблема.
We solved both problems in half an hour.
Perfective does not mean brief. Reading a long contract can be perfective if its endpoint is included. Imperfective does not mean long. A brief activity can be imperfective when seen in progress.
Step 3: Let Tense and Clause Type Filter the Choice
Aspect and tense interact, but one does not replace the other.
| Environment | Strong default | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| event unfolding now | imperfective | perfective present normally cannot present an actual event from inside |
| past narration | both | background/process versus bounded foreground |
| future I | both | future process/habit versus one future result |
| future time/condition clause | often perfective present for a boundary | кад прочитам, ако завршим |
| imperative | both | activity/repetition versus one requested result |
| after a phase verb | usually imperfective | beginning, continuing, or stopping accesses the event’s internal phase |
Почела је да чита записник наглас.
She began reading the minutes aloud.
Сутра ће читати записник, а затим ће прочитати закључке.
Tomorrow she will read the minutes, and then she will read the conclusions through.
The phase verb favors imperfective чита because a beginning opens an activity. Future I allows both; the second clause chooses perfective because completing the conclusions matters.
Step 4: Diagnose Repetition Carefully
An open habit generally uses imperfective. A repeated frame can nevertheless contain perfective when each occurrence reaches its own boundary.
Сваког јутра чита вести уз кафу.
Every morning he reads the news over coffee.
Кад год прочита важну вест, пошаље је сестри.
Whenever he reads an important news item through, he sends it to his sister.
The first presents a routine. Кад год in the second distributes bounded прочита and пошаље over many occasions. Therefore repeated equals imperfective is a default, not a categorical rule.
Distributive quantity can create the same effect:
На одмору је сваког дана прочитала по једну причу.
On vacation she read one complete story each day.
Each story supplies a separate endpoint.
Step 5: Use Time Expressions as Evidence, Not Commands
Some expressions strongly favor a viewpoint:
| Cue | Frequent interpretation | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| сада, док, сатима | open process | сатима је читао |
| обично, често, сваког дана | habit | често је читао |
| одједном, коначно | bounded change/result | коначно је прочитао |
| за сат времена, до краја | time to boundary/completion | прочитао је за сат |
| кад год, по један | repeated bounded events possible | прочита по један |
These are diagnostics, not grammatical triggers. Читао је књигу до краја вечери can mean he read until the evening ended without finishing the book; the phrase does not magically perfectivize читао.
Step 6: Recheck Negation, Questions, and Modality
Negation often reveals what is denied. Imperfective negation denies engagement or an ongoing/repeated activity; perfective negation denies reaching the boundary.
Нисам читао тај приручник.
I did not read / was not reading that manual. (male speaker; no engagement asserted)
Нисам прочитао тај приручник до краја.
I did not finish that manual. (male speaker)
A completion question naturally selects perfective; an answer can switch to imperfective to acknowledge partial activity:
Јеси ли прочитала уговор? — Нисам. Читала сам га, али нисам стигла до прилога.
Did you read the contract through? — No. I was reading it, but I did not get to the appendices. (female addressee and speaker)
Modal and phase verbs impose their own viewpoint. Могу да прочитам presents ability to achieve the result; могу да читам presents ability or opportunity to engage in reading.
Могу да читам у возу, али не могу да прочитам цео извештај до Београда.
I can read on the train, but I cannot finish the whole report by the time we reach Belgrade.
A Compact Decision Procedure
- Identify the precise Serbian lexical event and verify the pair.
- If process, manner, unrestricted habit, duration, or background matters, start with imperfective.
- If one completion, result, transition, or delimited occurrence matters, start with perfective.
- Apply the tense or mood filter: actual ongoing present resists perfective; past, future, and imperatives allow both for different viewpoints.
- For repetition, decide whether the pattern itself is open or every repetition is a bounded unit.
- Check whether negation, a phase verb, a modal, or a derivational prefix changes the intended claim.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Follow the Procedure
Choose aspect for I spent two hours on the email and I completed the email in two hours.
Писала сам имејл два сата. — Написала сам имејл за два сата.
I worked on the email for two hours. — I completed the email in two hours. Answer: open duration, then time to a boundary. (female speaker)
Task 2: Diagnose a Dialogue
Explain the switch in aspect.
Јеси ли поправио славину? — Нисам; поправљао сам је, али ми недостаје један део.
Did you fix the faucet? — No; I worked on it, but I am missing one part. Answer: perfective asks about successful repair; imperfective confirms activity without success. (male addressee and speaker)
Common Mistakes
Mapping perfective to past and imperfective to present
❌ „Прочитам“ је прошло време, а „читам“ садашње.
Incorrect—both forms are morphologically present; aspect and tense are separate categories.
✅ Сада читам, а кад прочитам, јавићу ти се.
I am reading now, and when I finish, I will contact you.
Selecting a prefix only because completion is intended
❌ „Потписао сам извештај“ значи исто што и „завршио сам писање извештаја“.
Incorrect—потписати means sign and names a different event.
✅ Написао сам извештај, а директор га је потписао.
I wrote the report, and the director signed it. (male speaker)
Treating every habit as obligatorily imperfective
❌ Свако понављање мора имати несвршени вид.
Incorrect—repeated frames can distribute bounded perfective events.
✅ Кад год заврши извештај, сачува резервну копију.
Whenever she finishes a report, she saves a backup copy.
Letting an adverb choose aspect mechanically
❌ Прилог „коначно“ увек захтева свршени глагол.
Incorrect—adverbs are cues, not agreement rules; context still determines viewpoint.
✅ Коначно сам мирно спавао целу ноћ.
At last I slept peacefully all night. (male speaker; imperfective activity)
Key Takeaways
- Choose the lexical event before choosing its viewpoint.
- Imperfective favors internal process, habit, duration, manner, and background.
- Perfective favors one boundary, result, transition, or distributively repeated whole.
- Tense, mood, negation, and clause type filter the choice but do not replace aspect.
- Prefixes and suppletive partners belong to lexical networks; verify meaning and government instead of guessing.
