Aspect changes what a Serbian imperative asks the listener to control. Perfective commonly targets one bounded result—open it, finish it, remember it. Imperfective commonly targets an activity, manner, repeated routine, or ban on engaging in an activity.
These are strong defaults, not a positive-versus-negative rule. Both aspects occur in affirmative and negative imperatives, and neither aspect is inherently polite or rude. This page focuses on viewpoint; use Imperative Forms for formation.
One Bounded Result
Perfective is natural when success means reaching one clear boundary.
Lock the archive before you go home.
Read the contract through before signing.
Please send me the final version by Friday.
Perfective закључај, прочитај, пошаљите presents a target state or completed transfer. The deadline and до краја reinforce the boundary but do not create the aspect by themselves.
Activity, Manner, and Repetition
Imperfective is natural when the command regulates how an activity proceeds or establishes a repeated practice.
Write a little larger so that everyone can see what is written on the board.
Doctor, speak more slowly, please.
Check the tire pressure once a month.
The first two imperatives focus on manner during an open activity. Проверавајте establishes a recurring instruction. A perfective counterpart such as проверите would instead request one complete check in the relevant situation.
One Pair across Four Command Types
The pair узимати — узети shows why command type matters more than polarity.
Direct order: one item
Take the spare key from the shelf.
Perfective узми targets one completed taking event.
Hospitable invitation
Please have some more cake.
This is a conventional hospitable invitation. Its perfective aspect packages one serving; politeness comes from plural/polite -те, слободно, situation, and tone—not from perfectivity.
General prohibition
Do not take this medicine on an empty stomach.
Imperfective не узимајте bans the activity as a general practice.
Warning against one outcome
Do not take two doses at once.
Perfective узмете is fully natural under negation because the warning aims to prevent one bounded outcome. This construction uses немојте да + present, but a direct perfective negative imperative is also common with certain verbs, especially не заборави.
Do not forget to bring your identity card.
The verb is perfective because the unwanted outcome is one failure to remember. A blanket rule that negative imperatives must be imperfective would wrongly reject this everyday sentence.
Two Kinds of Negative Command
An imperfective prohibition blocks entry into an activity, its continuation, or its recurrence.
Do not touch the cables while the device is switched on.
Do not shout in the hallway; an exam is in progress.
A perfective prohibition prevents one result or mishap.
Do not drop the glass; it is slippery.
Do not be late for the last bus.
The difference is viewpoint, not weak versus strong negation. Context can support either member of some pairs:
Не касни на састанке.
Do not be late for meetings. (general rule)
Do not be late for tomorrow’s meeting. (one preventive warning)
Invitations and Conventional Imperatives
Hospitality uses both aspects. Perfective уђите, свратите, седните can invite the listener to cross one boundary. Imperfective седите is also conventional as have a seat and can focus on remaining seated.
Come in, please; the others are already waiting for you.
Please sit here while I get your documents.
Drop by when you are in the neighborhood.
There is no clean rule invitations are imperfective. Lexical convention, the imagined boundary, and the social setting all contribute.
Aspect Is Not Politeness
Compare two instructions:
Wait here until I come back. (informal singular)
Please wait a moment. (polite or plural)
Imperfective чекај maintains an open waiting activity. Perfective сачекајте delimits the wait as one manageable interval. The second sounds more courteous because of -те, молим вас, and the bounded context; perfective itself is not a politeness marker. With a sharp tone, Сачекај! can be abrupt.
Clitics and Complement Choice
Aspect does not change clitic order. In an affirmative imperative, short pronouns follow the imperative unit. With немој да, clitics occupy their normal position after да.
Send it to me as soon as you check all the numbers.
Do not send it to me before the final check.
Dative ми precedes accusative га in both. Imperfective шаљеш in the negative sentence bans premature engagement in sending. A warning against one accidental send could use perfective
With немој, both да + present and the infinitive are standard: alongside Немој да ми га шаљеш speakers also say Немој ми га слати. In the productive немој да + present pattern illustrated here, clitics occupy their normal position immediately after да.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: General Rule or One Warning?
Tell someone not to be late habitually, then warn them about one train.
Do not be late for work. — Do not miss the morning train by being late. Answer: imperfective general ban, then perfective preventive warning.
Task 2: Activity or Result?
Tell someone to write carefully, then to finish one address.
Write carefully. — Write the address at the top of the page. Answer: imperfective manner, then perfective bounded result.
Common Mistakes
Assuming every affirmative command must be perfective
Incorrect analysis—an imperfective imperative is natural when it regulates an activity’s manner.
Speak more slowly so that everyone can understand you.
Assuming negative imperatives cannot be perfective
Incorrect analysis—perfective is natural in a warning against one unwanted result.
Do not forget your umbrella in the restaurant.
Treating perfective as automatically polite
Incorrect—aspect does not itself encode politeness, and this wording can sound abrupt.
Please open the door.
Choosing a bounded result for a repeated instruction
Incorrect rule—an open repeated routine naturally favors imperfective, although context can distribute bounded events.
Check the pressure every morning.
Key Takeaways
- Perfective commonly requests or prevents one bounded result.
- Imperfective commonly regulates an activity, manner, habit, or general ban.
- Negative perfective imperatives are normal in preventive warnings such as не заборави.
- Invitations and requests use both aspects; politeness comes from address, softeners, tone, and context.
- Aspect leaves clitic order and complement structure intact.
