Using the Imperative Politely

A Serbian imperative is not automatically rude. Седите can be a welcoming “have a seat,” while an indirect grammatical question can still sound impatient. Politeness comes from the relationship between speakers, ти/Ви agreement, aspect, particles, intonation, and the amount of burden—not from adding one equivalent of English “please.”

Match the form to ти, plural ви, or polite Ви

The singular imperative addresses one familiar person: сачекај, уђи, реци. The form in -те addresses either several people or one person formally: сачекајте, уђите, реците.

RelationshipPronounImperativeOther forms
one familiar personтиизвини, сачекајможеш ли, молим те
several peopleвиизвините, сачекајтеможете ли, молим вас
one respected/distant personВиизвините, сачекајтеможете ли, молим Вас

Capital Ви, Вас, Вам is conventional in direct respectful correspondence to one person. Lowercase plural ви, вас, вам is normal for several addressees. In many modern emails lowercase is also encountered for formal singular, but if you choose capitalization, keep it consistent.

Милице, сачекај ме код главног улаза.

Milica, wait for me at the main entrance. (informal singular)

Господине Петровићу, сачекајте овде док Вас лекар не позове.

Mr Petrović, please wait here until the doctor calls you. (formal singular)

Децо, уђите полако и седите у први ред.

Children, come in slowly and sit in the front row. (plural)

The -те ending does not by itself reveal singular politeness versus plural address; the noun, pronoun capitalization, and context do that. A vocative title such as господине Петровићу helps establish a respectful frame.

Молим те / молим вас and natural placement

Молим те and молим вас can precede or follow a request. Initial placement often frames the whole request politely; final placement can soften it or add insistence, depending on intonation.

Молим вас, пошаљите ми исправљену верзију до петка.

Please send me the corrected version by Friday. (polite/formal or plural)

Затвори прозор, молим те; баш је хладно.

Close the window, please; it is really cold. (informal singular)

Serbian молим is not a magic politeness marker. Одмах ми то пошаљите, молим вас can still sound demanding because одмах, word order, and context create urgency. Conversely, Изволите, седите is gracious without молим вас.

Изволите, уђите и седите где Вам одговара.

Please, come in and sit wherever suits you. (formal hospitality)

💡
First choose the correct relationship—ти or Ви—then soften the request if the burden or setting requires it. Adding молим вас cannot repair mismatched person forms.

Aspect changes the social effect

Perfective imperatives often focus on one bounded result: седни “sit down,” потпиши “sign,” сачекај “wait (until the relevant point).” Imperfective forms can invite someone into an activity or tell them to continue: седи, потписуј, чекај. In hospitality, an imperfective form may sound warmly permissive because the activity is presented as available now.

Уђите, не морате да чекате испред врата.

Come in; you do not have to wait outside the door. (one transition inside)

Седите, кафа ће бити готова за минут.

Have a seat; the coffee will be ready in a minute. (polite invitation)

This is pragmatic, not mechanical. Седите! can be a strict classroom command with sharp intonation, while perfective седните, молим вас can be courteous. Aspect contributes a viewpoint; it does not carry politeness alone. See Aspect in the Imperative.

Alternatives to a direct imperative

When a request is burdensome, formal, or easy to refuse, speakers often use a question with моћи or the conditional:

FormTypical force
Пошаљите ми документ.direct instruction; appropriate where roles justify it
Можете ли да ми пошаљете документ?neutral polite request
Да ли бисте могли да ми пошаљете документ?more deferential/indirect request
Ако Вам није тешко, пошаљите ми документ.explicitly acknowledges the burden

Можете ли да ми придржите врата док унесем кутије?

Could you hold the door for me while I carry in the boxes?

Да ли бисте могли да померите састанак за пола сата?

Would you be able to move the meeting by half an hour?

The conditional бисте могли is useful but not required for every polite exchange. In a bakery, Дајте ми један хлеб, молим вас is ordinary; an elaborate conditional may sound needlessly distant. Politeness must fit the setting.

💡
Use indirectness in proportion to the request. Дајте ми један хлеб, молим вас is courteous service language; да ли бисте могли is more natural when the listener must make an unusual effort or change a prior arrangement.

Collaborative and softened particles

Хајде да... proposes shared action and is often less face-threatening than directing the other person alone. Само can reassure or facilitate—само уђите “just come in”—but in another context it can sound impatient. Слободно grants permission: слободно питајте “feel free to ask.”

Хајде да прво проверимо бројеве, па ћемо онда послати извештај.

Let's check the figures first, and then we'll send the report.

Слободно ме прекините ако нешто није јасно.

Feel free to interrupt me if anything is unclear. (formal or plural)

Само изволите, колегиница ће Вас примити за неколико минута.

Please go ahead; my colleague will see you in a few minutes. (formal singular)

These particles do not change the case government or complement structure of the verb. Питати некога still takes accusative, and помоћи некоме still takes dative.

Clitics in polite commands

Positive imperatives provide a stressed host, so clitics follow them in their normal cluster order: пошаљите ми га, додајте ми је, сместите се. With formal Ви, object clitics do not change; only the imperative and any agreeing words reflect the address choice.

Пошаљите ми га поново, молим Вас; прилог се није отворио.

Please send it to me again; the attachment did not open. (formal singular)

Сместите се овде, а ја ћу донети образац.

Make yourself comfortable here, and I will bring the form. (polite or plural)

In the first example, dative ми precedes accusative га. Moving English-style pronouns freely around the imperative produces unnatural or ungrammatical clusters.

Affirmative, negative, and question set

Сачекајте овде, молим вас.

Please wait here. (polite or plural imperative)

Немојте још улазити, молим вас.

Please do not go in yet. (polite or plural negative command)

Можете ли да сачекате овде још неколико минута?

Could you wait here for a few more minutes? (polite question)

All three can be appropriate. The question creates more room to refuse; the imperative is efficient when the request is routine or institutionally expected.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Change the relationship

Turn Сачекај ме и пошаљи ми адресу into a request to one unfamiliar older person and then to several friends. Adjust the imperative endings, pronouns, and capitalization.

Task 2: Match burden to strategy

Request a seat in a café, ask a colleague to email one file, and ask a client to move a scheduled meeting. Choose a direct imperative, можете ли, or да ли бисте могли, and justify the degree of indirectness.

Common Mistakes

❌ Господине, сачекај овде један тренутак.

Incorrect address match in a neutral formal interaction — господине calls for the Ви-form сачекајте.

✅ Господине, сачекајте овде један тренутак.

Sir, please wait here for a moment.

❌ Ана, пошаљите ми фотографије кад стигнеш.

Incorrect — both verbs address Ana, but пошаљите and стигнеш disagree in person and number.

✅ Ана, пошаљи ми фотографије кад стигнеш.

Ana, send me the photographs when you arrive.

❌ Пошаљите га ми до краја дана.

Incorrect clitic order — dative ми precedes accusative га.

✅ Пошаљите ми га до краја дана.

Please send it to me by the end of the day.

❌ Молим Вас пошаљи ми рачун.

Incorrect person mismatch — formal Вас requires the Ви-imperative пошаљите.

✅ Молим Вас, пошаљите ми рачун.

Please send me the invoice. (formal singular)

❌ Српски императив је увек непристојан, па га треба заменити кондиционалом.

Incorrect — a well-matched imperative is natural in invitations, routine service encounters, instructions, and many requests.

✅ Изволите, седите; одмах ћу донети мени.

Please have a seat; I will bring the menu right away.
