Serbian clitics gather near the beginning of their clause in a cluster, and the order inside that cluster is much less flexible than the order of full noun phrases. You may choose what constituent opens the clause, but you may not freely rearrange сам, ти, га, се, је, and ли. The practical standard sequence is ли > auxiliary other than је > dative > accusative/genitive > се > auxiliary је.
For the perfect-tense placement that supplies many of these clusters, see Perfect Tense Word Order.
The cluster map
| Slot | Type | Frequent forms |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | question particle | ли |
| 2 | auxiliary other than 3sg је | сам, си, смо, сте, су; бих, би, бисмо, бисте; ћу, ћеш, ће, ћемо, ћете |
| 3 | dative pronoun | ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им |
| 4 | accusative/genitive pronoun | ме, те, га, је/ју, нас, вас, их |
| 5 | reflexive | се |
| 6 | 3sg perfect auxiliary | је |
Most clusters fill only two or three slots. The template predicts the relative order of whichever slots are present.
Сутра ћу ти га донети у канцеларију.
Tomorrow I will bring it to you at the office.
Раније бих вам их послао, али нисам имао адресу.
I would have sent them to you earlier, but I did not have the address. (male speaker)
Да ли си јој га показао пре састанка?
Did you show it to her before the meeting?
The three clusters are ћу-ти-га, бих-вам-их, and ли-си-јој-га. English separates auxiliaries and object pronouns around the verb; Serbian packages its unstressed forms together.
The exceptional final auxiliary је
All positive perfect auxiliaries except third-person singular је precede pronominal clitics: сам му га, си ми је, смо вам их. Auxiliary је instead closes the cluster.
Уредник ми га је вратио са неколико корисних напомена.
The editor returned it to me with several useful comments.
Јована нам их је оставила на рецепцији.
Jovana left them for us at reception.
The feminine accusative clitic is ordinarily је, but it takes the form ју before auxiliary је, avoiding је је.
Милош ју је позвао чим је стигао кући.
Miloš called her as soon as he got home.
With clitic се, affirmative third-person singular perfect је is normally omitted. Other auxiliaries remain.
Она ми се јавила тек после поноћи.
She contacted me only after midnight.
Ми смо се вратили последњим аутобусом.
We returned on the last bus.
The first sentence contains ми-се-Ø, not an unexpressed general license to drop auxiliaries. Negative није also remains: Она ми се није јавила.
External position versus internal order
The cluster normally follows the first suitable prosodic-syntactic unit. That unit may be one word or a multiword constituent.
Моја старија сестра ми га је препоручила прошле зиме.
My older sister recommended it to me last winter.
Here the subject phrase моја старија сестра forms the opening constituent; the cluster follows the whole phrase. A literary or carefully managed rhythm may split a longer phrase, but that is not a license to count the second written word mechanically.
Compare one proposition packaged in three ways:
Ана ми је јуче послала тај документ.
Ana sent me that document yesterday. (Ana is the topic.)
Јуче ми је тај документ послала Ана.
Yesterday, it was Ana who sent me that document. (time frame first; Ana in final focus)
Тај документ ми је Ана послала јуче, а не данас.
Ana sent me that document yesterday, not today. (the document is the topic; yesterday is contrastive)
The clitics remain early, while the positions of Ана, тај документ, and јуче organize topic and focus. Serbian word order is flexible because cases identify grammatical roles, but it is not free: changing the order changes the discourse presentation.
A placement diagnostic
Use this three-step test when a cluster feels doubtful:
- Find the clause boundary. Every coordinated or subordinate clause calculates its own cluster.
- Identify the first complete accented unit: a subject, adverbial, object, verb, or suitable connector.
- Read only the clitics and check their internal sequence against the template.
Кад ми га будеш вратила, послаћу ти нови примерак.
When you return it to me, I will send you a new copy.
There are two domains: кад | ми-га | будеш вратила and послаћу | ти | нови примерак. Future II будеш is a full finite form here, not part of the short auxiliary slot; ми-га remains an ordered pronoun cluster after кад.
Full forms do not occupy clitic slots
Stressed pronouns such as мени, теби, њему and full auxiliaries such as јесам can stand in focused positions. They are not inserted into the clitic template. Contrastive МЕНИ је послао means “to me,” while neutral Послао ми је merely identifies the recipient.
Мени је послала оригинал, а колеги само копију.
She sent the original to me, and only a copy to my colleague.
Do not normally double a focused full pronoun with its clitic in standard Serbian. Some regional speech permits broader clitic doubling, but it is not the neutral productive baseline taught here.
Common Mistakes
❌ Сутра ти ћу га донети.
Incorrect — future auxiliary ћу precedes the dative and accusative clitics.
✅ Сутра ћу ти га донети после посла.
Tomorrow I will bring it to you after work.
❌ Невена је ми их послала електронском поштом.
Incorrect — third-person auxiliary је follows the pronoun clitics.
✅ Невена ми их је послала електронском поштом.
Nevena sent them to me by email.
❌ Да ли га си већ прочитао?
Incorrect — ли precedes auxiliary си, which precedes object clitic га.
✅ Да ли си га већ прочитао до краја?
Have you read it all the way through yet?
❌ Сара је је сачекала испред биоскопа.
Incorrect — feminine object је becomes ју before auxiliary је.
✅ Сара ју је сачекала испред биоскопа.
Sara waited for her outside the cinema.
❌ Петар се је предомислио у последњем тренутку.
Incorrect in contemporary standard Serbian — affirmative 3sg је is omitted beside се.
✅ Петар се предомислио у последњем тренутку.
Petar changed his mind at the last moment.
Practice
- Arrange each cluster after the given opening: вечерас + ћу/вам/га, Ана + ми/је/их, and јеси/ли/му/је. Then add a natural lexical verb and context.
- Express “Jelena sent me the contract yesterday” three times, making Јелена, јуче, and уговор the opening topic in turn. Keep the cluster grammatical and explain what receives final focus.
Key Takeaways
- Internal order is fixed: ли > non-је auxiliary > dative > accusative/genitive > се > auxiliary је.
- The cluster's external second position and its internal order are separate decisions.
- Auxiliary је follows pronouns, feminine object је becomes ју before it, and је disappears beside се in an affirmative third-person singular perfect.
- Moving full constituents changes topic and focus; it does not free the clitics from their cluster grammar.
