Serbian ли is an enclitic with two related jobs. It can mark a neutral polar question after a finite verb, or attach to a deliberately fronted constituent and place that constituent under contrastive focus. In complex sentences, every embedded question creates its own placement domain, so “second position” must be understood as second within the relevant clause and prosodic unit—not mechanically as the second written word of the sentence.
For the A2 patterns Радите ли? and Да ли радите?, begin with the question particle li. This page explains the placements that change scope, focus, or clitic order.
Ли at the front of a clitic cluster
When ли belongs to the clitic cluster, it comes first. A useful standard ordering template is:
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ли | auxiliary other than је | dative pronoun | accusative/genitive pronoun | се | auxiliary је |
Not every slot is filled, but the relative order is stable. After да ли, the following pronouns and auxiliary form the expected cluster.
Да ли си му је коначно вратила?
Did you finally return it to him?
Да ли му се допала нова канцеларија?
Did he like the new office?
Да ли вам је неко објаснио поступак?
Has anyone explained the procedure to you?
In Да ли му се допала…, допала is the feminine singular l-participle agreeing with нова канцеларија, му is the dative experiencer, and се belongs to допасти се. The third-person singular perfect auxiliary је is omitted beside се. The broader omission rule is treated on je and clitic clusters.
Perfect, conditional, and future questions
In perfect-tense verb-first questions, the full stressed present forms of бити host ли: јесам ли, јеси ли, јесмо ли, јесте ли, јесу ли. The conventional third-person singular form is је ли. The remaining pronoun clitics follow ли.
Јеси ли им га већ показао?
Have you shown it to them yet?
Је ли ти Ана рекла за промену термина?
Did Ana tell you about the change of time?
Conditional forms similarly precede ли when they open a polite or hypothetical question.
Бисте ли нам могли послати исправљену понуду до петка?
Could you send us the corrected quote by Friday?
For the future, standard Serbian normally uses да ли ћеш… or хоћеш ли…, not initial ћеш ли. The full хоћеш can function as the question form of the future auxiliary, but context may also activate its lexical meaning “do you want.”
Да ли ћеш моћи да нас сачекаш испред позоришта?
Will you be able to wait for us outside the theater?
Хоћеш ли доћи раније да заједно поставимо столове?
Will you come earlier so we can set up the tables together?
The second sentence can shade toward willingness: “Are you willing to come earlier?” Serbian normally tolerates that overlap; the situation determines whether prediction or volition is foregrounded.
Embedded polar questions
An embedded question is selected by a verb such as знати, питати, проверити, or сећати се. It does not use English inversion. The embedded clause can begin with да ли, је ли, or—when a full finite form is available—another verb + ли sequence.
Не знам да ли су већ објавили резултате.
I don't know whether they have published the results yet.
Провери је ли прозор у спаваћој соби затворен.
Check whether the bedroom window is closed.
Питала ме је хоћу ли остати до краја састанка.
She asked me whether I would stay until the end of the meeting.
Да ли is the safest all-purpose neutral frame in contemporary standard Serbian. Embedded је ли is also standard and common, especially in speech and compact prose. Хоћу ли is possible because stressed хоћу hosts ли and introduces the future proposition.
The matrix clause does not “use up” second position for the embedded clause. In Не знам | да ли су…, the boundary after не знам starts a new clitic domain. This is why English word order is a poor guide.
Focused constituent + ли
A constituent placed directly before ли receives contrastive focus. This is marked, expressive word order, used when the alternatives are already salient or the speaker is correcting an assumption.
Ти ли си оставила поруку на мом столу?
Was it you who left the note on my desk?
Данас ли предајете завршни извештај, а не сутра?
Is it today that you're submitting the final report, rather than tomorrow?
Марку ли си послала једини примерак уговора?
Was it to Marko that you sent the only copy of the contract?
Compare neutral Јеси ли ти оставила поруку?, which asks whether you did it, with Ти ли си оставила поруку?, which singles out you against other possible people. Likewise, Данас ли…? challenges or checks the date specifically. Such placement is not merely a more elegant neutral question.
In carefully edited prose, focused ли can sound rhetorical or elevated. It remains productive in conversation when a clear contrast supports it, but using it without that contrast can sound theatrical.
Ли after question words: wondering, not a neutral wh-question
Question words normally form direct questions without ли: Где је? Ко долази? Шта радиш? Adding ли produces a different construction, often translated with “I wonder,” “who knows,” or an emotionally colored question. It can occur in internal reflection, storytelling, and rhetorical speech.
Где ли је сада онај стари фото-апарат?
I wonder where that old camera is now.
Ко ли му је рекао да смо променили план?
I wonder who told him that we changed the plan.
Шта ли ће деца смислити за њен рођендан?
I wonder what the children will come up with for her birthday.
This is a stance use: the speaker presents the answer as uncertain, intriguing, or difficult to discover. In an ordinary request for information, omit ли: Ко вам је то рекао?
Alternative questions and scope
In Да ли желиш чај или кафу?, context decides whether the expected response is yes/no (“Do you want tea or coffee at all?”) or a choice (“Which one?”). Speech normally distinguishes the readings through intonation. A clear choice question can avoid ambiguity by asking Шта желиш, чај или кафу?
Да ли вам више одговара уторак или четвртак?
Does Tuesday or Thursday suit you better?
Here ли marks the embedded proposition as interrogative, while или introduces the alternatives inside its scope.
A micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли ти променила лозинку? — Нисам. — Ти ли си је онда записала на табли? — Ја сам је записала, али лозинку нисам мењала.
— Did you change the password? — No. — Was it you, then, who wrote it on the board? — I wrote it down, but I didn't change the password.
The first question is neutral about the action and includes an explicit subject. The second places ти before ли and contrasts the addressee with someone else. Its clitics follow in order: ли — си — је.
Common Mistakes
Letting a short auxiliary host ли
❌ Сте ли им послали коначну верзију?
Incorrect — short сте cannot stand first as the host of ли.
✅ Јесте ли им послали коначну верзију?
Have you sent them the final version?
Using initial ће as if it were stressed
❌ Ће ли Милена стићи пре осам?
Incorrect in standard Serbian — future clitic ће cannot open the question.
✅ Да ли ће Милена стићи пре осам?
Will Milena arrive before eight?
Carrying English inversion into an embedded clause
❌ Не знам да ли су ли гости стигли.
Incorrect — the embedded question already has да ли; do not add a second question particle after the auxiliary.
✅ Не знам да ли су гости стигли на време.
I don't know whether the guests arrived on time.
Using focused ли without a contrast
❌ Сутра ли пада киша?
Marked and unnatural for a neutral weather forecast question — it contrastively focuses tomorrow.
✅ Да ли ће сутра падати киша?
Will it rain tomorrow?
Practice
- Embed these direct questions after Нисам сигурна…: Да ли је продавница отворена?, Хоће ли они доћи?, and Је ли му се допао предлог? Preserve the internal clitic order.
- Write two questions about the same event: a neutral verb + ли question and a focused constituent + ли question. For example, contrast whether someone sent the file with whether it was Jelena who sent it. Explain which alternatives the focused version evokes.
Key Takeaways
- Ли heads its clitic cluster, but it still needs an accented host before it.
- Perfect, conditional, and future questions require forms capable of hosting ли: јеси ли, бисте ли, хоћеш ли, or да ли ћеш.
- Each embedded question has its own second-position domain.
- Constituent + ли marks contrastive focus; question word + ли usually expresses wondering rather than a neutral request for information.
