The particle ли turns a statement into a yes/no question, but it does not behave like English do. It is an unstressed enclitic: it leans on accented material immediately before it and normally occupies the second position in its clause. Serbian also has the very common frame да ли, which lets the rest of the clause keep statement-like order.
The two neutral question patterns
For an ordinary information-seeking question, choose either finite verb + ли or да ли + clause. Both are neutral in contemporary standard Serbian. The first pattern is compact; the second is especially convenient when the verb contains other clitics.
| Statement | Verb + ли | Да ли + clause |
|---|---|---|
| Радите суботом. | Радите ли суботом? | Да ли радите суботом? |
| Имате слободну собу. | Имате ли слободну собу? | Да ли имате слободну собу? |
| Можемо да платимо картицом. | Можемо ли да платимо картицом? | Да ли можемо да платимо картицом? |
Радите ли сутра после подне?
Are you working tomorrow afternoon?
Да ли овај аутобус стаје код железничке станице?
Does this bus stop by the railway station?
There is no English-style subject–auxiliary inversion. Serbian does not add an equivalent of do: Познајеш ли Ивану? literally keeps the lexical verb and attaches ли to it.
Познајеш ли Ивану са курса фотографије?
Do you know Ivana from the photography course?
Why ли cannot stand first
Because ли is unstressed, it cannot normally open a clause. In the verb-first pattern, the accented finite verb is its host: долазите ли, знате ли, може ли. In да ли, accented да provides that host. The two words form a familiar question-opening unit, but ли remains the enclitic member.
Да ли знате када се музеј затвара?
Do you know when the museum closes?
Може ли овај рачун да се плати преко апликације?
Can this bill be paid through the app?
The particle is not an optional filler. Removing it from a written verb-first question produces a statement unless question intonation and context do the work. An intonation-only question such as Долазиш вечерас? is fully natural (informal), but it sounds more conversational and can express confirmation or surprise rather than a completely neutral request for information.
Долазиш ли вечерас на пробу?
Are you coming to rehearsal tonight?
Долазиш вечерас?
You're coming tonight?
Бити and other clitics
The present-tense short forms сам, си, је, смо, сте, су are themselves clitics, so most of them cannot serve as hosts for ли. Use the full stressed forms јесам, јеси, јесмо, јесте, јесу before ли. The conventional third-person singular question is је ли, not the otherwise expected full јесте ли.
| Person | Verb + ли question | Да ли question |
|---|---|---|
| 1st singular | Јесам ли? | Да ли сам? |
| 2nd singular | Јеси ли? | Да ли си? |
| 3rd singular | Је ли? | Да ли је? |
| 1st plural | Јесмо ли? | Да ли смо? |
| 2nd plural | Јесте ли? | Да ли сте? |
| 3rd plural | Јесу ли? | Да ли су? |
Јеси ли ми сачувао место поред прозора?
Did you save me a seat by the window?
Да ли си јој већ послала нову адресу?
Have you already sent her the new address?
In these perfect-tense questions, ми, јој, and the auxiliary belong to the same second-position clitic cluster. Do not copy English order word for word. The detailed ordering rules, including object pronouns and се, are developed on li placement in detail.
Scope and conversational force
A neutral clause-level ли asks whether the whole proposition is true. Serbian can also put a focused constituent before ли, as in Ти ли си…?, but that is a marked contrastive question: Was it you? It is not merely a stylistic rearrangement of Јеси ли ти…?. At A2, use verb + ли or да ли for neutral questions.
Likewise, ordinary information questions already contain a question word and need no ли.
Где сте оставили ауто?
Where did you leave the car?
Forms such as Где ли је? mean “I wonder where it is” and add a reflective or speculative stance. They are covered on the advanced placement page.
A micro-dialogue
— Идеш ли сутра у Нови Сад? — Идем, али се враћам истог дана.
— Are you going to Novi Sad tomorrow? — I am, but I'm coming back the same day.
If the first speaker instead asks Идеш сутра у Нови Сад?, the question sounds more like confirmation of an existing plan. Идеш сутра у Нови Сад. with falling statement intonation simply reports the plan. The words are nearly identical, but ли and intonation change the utterance's force.
Register and spelling
Both Да ли долазите? and Долазите ли? work in conversation, correspondence, and formal prose. The pronunciation је л’ is extremely common (informal), but careful standard writing uses је ли as two words. The fused spelling јел is nonstandard in edited prose; do not replace it with јер, which means “because.”
Common Mistakes
Starting with an enclitic
❌ Ли имате ситно?
Incorrect — the unstressed particle ли cannot begin a neutral clause.
✅ Да ли имате ситно за аутомат?
Do you have change for the machine?
Copying English do-support
❌ Да радите ли овде?
Incorrect — do not combine да as an English-style auxiliary with a later ли.
✅ Да ли радите у овој згради?
Do you work in this building?
Using a short auxiliary as the host
❌ Си ли закључао задња врата?
Incorrect — short си is an enclitic and cannot host ли at the beginning.
✅ Јеси ли закључао задња врата?
Did you lock the back door?
Adding ли to a neutral question word
❌ Када ли почиње састанак?
Incorrect as a neutral request for the meeting time — ли adds a marked ‘I wonder’ nuance.
✅ Када почиње сутрашњи састанак?
When does tomorrow's meeting start?
Practice
- Turn these statements into two neutral questions, once with verb + ли and once with да ли: Говорите енглески.; Стигли сте на време.; Она може да нас сачека. Pay special attention to the form of бити in the perfect.
- Decide what each speaker most likely wants: new information, confirmation, or simple assertion. Compare Отворена је апотека?, Је ли апотека отворена?, and Апотека је отворена. Then write a natural one-line answer to each question.
Key Takeaways
- Neutral yes/no questions use finite verb + ли or да ли + clause.
- Ли is an enclitic: it cannot stand first and it interacts with other second-position clitics.
- Before ли, use stressed јесам/јеси/јесмо/јесте/јесу, with conventional је ли in the third-person singular.
- Intonation-only questions are common (informal) but often sound confirmatory; ли explicitly marks question force.
