Serbian uses different forms for the number of occasions, the factor by which something changes, and an adjective such as “double.” English twice can cover all three, but Serbian distinguishes два пута, двоструко, and двострук. Choosing the right construction prevents a real ambiguity: an event happening twice is not the same as a quantity doubling.
Counting occasions: једном, двапут, два пута
The most common iterative adverbs are:
| Frequency | Compact form | Analytic form |
|---|---|---|
| once | једном / једанпут | један пут |
| twice | двапут | два пута |
| three times | трипут | три пута |
| four times | четири пута | четири пута |
| five times | пет пута | пет пута |
Једном is the neutral everyday equivalent of “once.” Једанпут, двапут, and трипут are single words. The separate forms два пута, три пута, and so on are equally standard and highly productive. Do not write the compact form as two words or the analytic form as one accidental compound.
Звао сам те двапут, али ми се оба пута укључила говорна пошта.
I called you twice, but both times I got voicemail.
Ову лозинку можеш да употребиш само једном.
You can use this password only once.
Тренер нам је три пута показао исти покрет.
The coach showed us the same movement three times.
In the analytic construction, пута is the fixed counting form of пут “time/occasion.” It appears after two, three, five, and larger numerals alike: два пута, пет пута, двадесет пута. This is a lexicalized frequency expression; do not substitute ordinary plural путеви, which means “roads” or literal “ways.”
Asking and answering “how many times?”
Use колико пута? for an unknown number of occasions. Толико пута means “that many times,” and неколико пута means “several times.” Because колико, толико, and неколико pattern with quantities of five and above, an ordinary counted noun after them is genitive plural: колико покушаја, неколико дана.
Колико пута недељно идеш на базен?
How many times a week do you go to the swimming pool?
Неколико пута сам проверио адресу пре него што сам послао пакет.
I checked the address several times before sending the parcel.
For recurring schedules, Serbian commonly combines an iterative phrase with an adverb or time unit: два пута дневно, трипут недељно, једном месечно. The ending -но creates schedule adverbs from many time nouns.
Лек се узима два пута дневно после јела.
The medicine is taken twice a day after meals.
Први пут, други пут, and repetition
When the point is the position of an occasion in a sequence, Serbian uses an ordinal plus пут: први пут “for the first time,” други пут “the second time,” по трећи пут “for the third time.” Још једном means “once again,” while поново means “again.”
Први пут путујем сама и помало сам нервозна.
I am travelling alone for the first time, and I am a little nervous.
Документ је по трећи пут враћен на дораду.
The document has been returned for revision for the third time.
Можеш ли још једном да ми објасниш последњи корак?
Can you explain the last step to me once more?
The construction по + ordinal + пут marks recurrence and often carries mild emphasis: this has happened for the second, third, or tenth time. It is not the same as multiplying a value.
Multiplicative adjectives: двострук, трострук
Multiplicative adjectives describe something consisting of, having, or measuring a certain multiple: двострук “double/twofold,” трострук “triple/threefold,” четворострук “fourfold,” and вишеструк “multiple/manifold.” They decline like ordinary adjectives and agree with their noun.
| Gender/number | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | двоструки победник | two-time winner |
| feminine | двострука провера | double check |
| neuter | двоструко дно | double bottom |
| plural | двоструки стандарди | double standards |
Уговор предвиђа двоструку проверу сваке исплате.
The contract provides for a double check of every payment.
После измене система добили смо троструко бржи одзив.
After changing the system, we got a response three times as fast.
The adverbial forms двоструко, троструко, and вишеструко modify adjectives, comparatives, or verbs. In careful quantitative prose, двоструко већи is commonly understood as “twice as large.” To avoid any possible arithmetic ambiguity, especially in technical writing, state the resulting value or use a verb such as удвостручити се.
An occurrence versus a factor
This contrast is essential:
Цена је порасла два пута током лета.
The price went up on two occasions during the summer.
Цена се удвостручила током лета.
The price doubled during the summer.
The first sentence counts two separate increases; it does not say that the final price is twice the original. The perfective verb удвостручити се denotes reaching double the earlier value. Утростручити се means “triple,” and transitive удвостручити производњу means “double production.”
Компанија је за пет година утростручила извоз.
The company tripled its exports in five years.
Everyday informal Serbian also uses дупли, дупло, and дуплирати: дупла кафа, дупло више, дуплирати број места. These are widespread, but двострук, двоструко, and удвостручити are preferable in formal and technical prose.
Сипај ми дуплу кафу, данас ме чека дуг састанак.
Make me a double coffee; I have a long meeting ahead today.
Counting people, prices, and durations
An iterative expression is an adverb, so it does not itself determine the case of another noun. The verb or preposition still does that: два пута сам платио карту has accusative карту because of платити. By contrast, an ordinary counted phrase follows numerical government: два покушаја, but пет покушаја. See Numeral Government for that system.
Prices often combine both ideas: два пута по сто динара means two payments of one hundred dinars each; двострука цена means a price twice as high. Ages take an ordinary measurement phrase: два пута у двадесет година means twice over a twenty-year span, not “at twice the age.”
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Occasion or multiplication?
Translate “The rent increased twice,” “The rent doubled,” and “We checked the rent three times.” Then identify which Serbian expression counts events and which describes the final factor.
Task 2: Build a schedule
Describe something done once a month, twice a day, and three times a week. Give both the compact and analytic versions wherever both are idiomatic.
Common Mistakes
English transfer encourages learners to use два пута for every meaning of “twice” and to ignore Serbian word boundaries.
❌ Плата се повећала два пута и сада износи тачно дупло више.
Incorrect for the intended meaning — два пута says the salary increased on two occasions, not necessarily that it doubled.
✅ Плата се удвостручила и сада износи сто хиљада динара.
The salary doubled and now amounts to one hundred thousand dinars.
❌ Идем на тренинг двоструко недељно.
Incorrect — двоструко describes a factor, not two separate weekly occasions.
✅ Идем на тренинг два пута недељно.
I go to training twice a week.
❌ Позвао сам је двапута јутрос.
Incorrect spelling — the compact standard form is двапут, without final -а.
✅ Позвао сам је двапут јутрос.
I called her twice this morning.
❌ Ово је моја два пута посета Новом Саду.
Incorrect — position in a sequence requires an ordinal expression, not a frequency phrase.
✅ Ово је моја друга посета Новом Саду.
This is my second visit to Novi Sad.
❌ Три пут сам проверио број рачуна.
Incorrect — the analytic frequency expression uses the fixed form пута.
✅ Три пута сам проверио број рачуна.
I checked the account number three times.
Key Takeaways
- Једном, двапут, and два пута count occasions.
- Колико пута? asks for frequency; schedules use дневно, недељно, and месечно.
- Двострук is an agreeing adjective, while двоструко is adverbial.
- Цена је порасла два пута counts two rises; цена се удвостручила states that the price doubled.
