je inside the Clitic Cluster | Serbian Grammar

Serbian је can be the third-person singular auxiliary/copula or a feminine object clitic. The forms are identical, but their positions are not. Auxiliary је is exceptional: it closes the clitic cluster, after dative, accusative/genitive, and reflexive clitics. This produces ми га је, јој се with omitted auxiliary, and the crucial feminine sequence ју је, never је је.

The cluster slot occupied by auxiliary је

The practical order is ли — other auxiliary — dative — accusative/genitive — се — auxiliary је. Not every clause fills every slot.

In ми га је, auxiliary је follows both objects. With си, the ordinary auxiliary slot comes earlier: ли си јој га. Learners cannot derive the order from English auxiliary placement.

First identify which је you need. Auxiliary је closes the cluster; feminine object је occupies the object slot and changes form only when collision would result.

Feminine accusative: је normally, ју before auxiliary је

Default feminine accusative is је in the present and beside auxiliaries other than је.

Виђам је сваког четвртка на пијаци.

I see her every Thursday at the market.

Позвао сам је да проверим адресу.

I called her to check the address. (male speaker)

In a third-person singular perfect, the object changes to ју and auxiliary је remains final.

Марија ју је позвала да провери адресу.

Marija called her to check the address.

Директор ми ју је представио после седнице.

The director introduced her to me after the meeting.

The alternation prevents adjacent је је. Full stressed њу does not alternate: Њу је позвала, не мене. See the full form inventory for case paradigms.

After negative није, both Није је видела and Није ју видела occur in contemporary codified practice. This variation is narrowly tied to није; it does not make ју a free present-tense variant.

Reflexive се suppresses third-person auxiliary је

In the third-person singular perfect of a reflexive verb, auxiliary је is normally omitted after се.

Тамара ми се јавила чим је слетела.

Tamara contacted me as soon as she landed.

Пас се сакрио испод стола кад је загрмело.

The dog hid under the table when it thundered.

The clusters are ми се and се, not ми се је or се је. Other auxiliaries remain because the omission is specific to third-person singular је:

Ја сам им се јавила јуче, а они су нам се јавили данас.

I contacted them yesterday, and they contacted us today. (female speaker)

This is omission of an auxiliary form, not omission of reflexive се. Deleting се can change the verb's meaning or make it ungrammatical.

One proposition in several information structures

Consider “Ana sent it to me yesterday.”

Ана ми га је послала јуче.

Ana sent it to me yesterday. (neutral subject topic)

Јуче ми га је Ана послала, не данас.

Yesterday Ana sent it to me, not today. (time contrast)

Тај уговор ми је Ана послала јуче.

That contract Ana sent me yesterday. (object topic; no accusative clitic because the full object occupies its role)

The cluster follows the first constituent: Ана | ми га је, Јуче | ми га је, Тај уговор | ми је. Do not double a neutral full direct object with га in the third version; Serbian does not generally use resumptive object doubling in an ordinary continuous clause.

Copular је follows the same prosodic constraint

Copular је is also unstressed and cannot begin a neutral clause.

Нова канцеларија је светла и тиха.

The new office is bright and quiet.

Светла је нова канцеларија, али је премала за цео тим.

The new office is bright, but it is too small for the whole team. (marked initial predicate)

The second order is grammatical but marked: initial светла is foregrounded, and је follows it. Flexibility changes focus; it does not make first-position је possible.

A placement diagnostic

Find the first prosodic-syntactic constituent.
Build one cluster after it.
Put question ли first inside that cluster.
Put auxiliary је last.
Change feminine accusative је to ју before auxiliary је.
Omit auxiliary је after reflexive се in the third-person singular perfect.

Када ми ју је Ивана вратила?

When did Ivana return it to me?

Initial када hosts ми ју је; subject Ивана follows the complete cluster.

Task 1: Build the collision-free cluster

Сестра + ми + фотографију + послати, perfect → Сестра ми ју је послала.

My sister sent it to me. Answer: dative ми + feminine object ју + final auxiliary је.

Task 2: Apply reflexive omission

После ручка се Наташа вратила на посао.

After lunch, Nataša returned to work. Answer: после ручка hosts се; third-person auxiliary је is omitted beside reflexive се.

Doubling је

❌ Соња је је срела на улазу.

Incorrect—feminine accusative changes to ју before auxiliary је.

✅ Соња ју је срела на улазу.

Sonja met her at the entrance.

Putting auxiliary је before object clitics

❌ Дејан је ми га донео јутрос.

Incorrect—auxiliary је closes the cluster after ми га.

✅ Дејан ми га је донео јутрос.

Dejan brought it to me this morning.

Keeping је after се

❌ Мина се је вратила раније.

Incorrect—third-person singular auxiliary је is omitted beside reflexive се.

✅ Мина се вратила раније.

Mina returned earlier.

Starting with a clitic

❌ Је Милан данас у канцеларији?

Incorrect—unstressed је cannot stand first; use да ли or another host.

✅ Да ли је Милан данас у канцеларији?

Is Milan in the office today?
