Clitics in da-Clauses

A Serbian да clause is its own finite word-order domain. Whether да introduces reported content, completes a modal or volitional verb, or expresses purpose, its unstressed pronouns and auxiliaries normally gather immediately after да: да ми се јави, да смо га видели, да ће ти га послати. English word order after that or to does not predict this placement.

For the meanings and complement types introduced by да, see The Subordinator da; here the focus is placement inside those clauses.

The default beginning: да + cluster

The subordinator да provides the opening unit; the clitic cluster follows it in the ordinary internal order.

Cluster typePatternExample beginning
one object pronounда + dative/accusativeда ми каже; да га видим
two object pronounsда + dative + accusativeда ти га пошаљем
reflexiveда + dative + седа ми се јави
content-clause auxiliaryда + auxiliary + pronounsда су нам га послали
3sg perfect једа + pronouns + једа ми га је послала

Замолила сам Немању да ми га пошаље пре ручка.

I asked Nemanja to send it to me before lunch. (female speaker)

Важно је да се сви учесници пријаве до петка.

It is important for all participants to register by Friday.

Чула сам да су вам већ вратили новац.

I heard that they had already returned your money. (female speaker)

The lexical verb can appear much later than its object clitics. Serbian да ми га пошаље is not patterned on English to send it to me.

💡
When you hear да, open a new box. Put that clause's clitics at the front of the box, then add the subject, adverbs, and lexical verb.

Present-tense complements

After modal, phase, and volitional verbs, да + present often corresponds to an English infinitive. The present form carries person and number, even when the event is wanted, necessary, possible, or future-oriented.

Морам да ти објасним зашто смо променили план.

I have to explain to you why we changed the plan.

Желимо да нам Ана покаже како програм ради.

We want Ana to show us how the program works.

In the second sentence, subordinate subject Ана follows clitic нам. The person of покаже and the overt noun identify who performs the showing. Neutral да Ана нам покаже breaks the close subordinator–clitic placement.

A focused subject can still be contrasted, but the clitic remains after да:

Желим да ми АНА објасни поступак, а не њен помоћник.

I want ANA to explain the procedure to me, not her assistant.

Capital letters here represent contrastive stress for explanation; ordinary Serbian spelling would not capitalize Ана merely to mark focus. In normal text, context and intonation do the work.

Negation inside a да clause

Verbal не is a proclitic attached to the finite verb, not a member of the second-position enclitic cluster. Object and reflexive clitics remain after да, while не stays with its verb.

Боље је да му ништа не обећамо пре коначне одлуке.

It is better not to promise him anything before the final decision.

Замолила ме је да јој се не јављам током састанка.

She asked me not to contact her during the meeting.

With negative auxiliaries, the negative form itself follows да or the appropriate preceding clitic arrangement.

Изненадило ме је да нам нису раније рекли за промену.

I was surprised that they had not told us about the change earlier.

Тврди да се није предомислила због притиска.

She claims that she did not change her mind because of pressure.

Compare да нам нису рекли with affirmative да су нам рекли. Negative нису is not split into не + су.

Да ли creates an embedded question

In да ли, question particle ли immediately follows да and comes before the other clitics in its cluster.

Провери да ли су нам послали исправан број рачуна.

Check whether they sent us the correct account number.

Не знам да ли му се допала наша понуда.

I do not know whether he liked our offer.

This construction differs from complement да. Знам да су стигли asserts the content “they arrived”; Не знам да ли су стигли embeds the question “did they arrive?” A volitional verb does not take да ли merely because English has whether to; Serbian may need a different lexical frame such as не знам да ли да….

Не знам да ли да прихватим понуду или да тражим још времена.

I do not know whether to accept the offer or ask for more time.

The first да ли marks the embedded deliberative question; each following да introduces a possible action.

Да + present versus an infinitive

When the modal and complement share a subject, both structures can be standard with many verbs.

Морам да ти га пошаљем данас.

I have to send it to you today.

Морам ти га послати данас.

I have to send it to you today.

In the finite version, да starts a new domain and hosts ти га. In the infinitival version, there is no finite subordinate да clause; ти га belongs to the larger verbal complex after морам. Usage varies by construction, speaker, region, and register. Neither construction is universally wrong in Serbian.

When the subordinate subject differs, the finite clause is essential:

Желим да ми ти пошаљеш коначну верзију.

I want you to send me the final version.

An infinitive cannot mark the contrast between “I send” and “you send” by itself.

One proposition in several orders

Consider “Ana should send me the contract today” inside a wish:

Желим да ми Ана данас пошаље уговор.

I want Ana to send me the contract today. (neutral subordinate order)

Желим да ми данас уговор пошаље Ана.

I want it to be Ana who sends me the contract today. (Ana in final corrective focus)

Уговор желим да ми Ана пошаље данас, а понуду сутра.

I want Ana to send me the contract today, and the quote tomorrow. (contract fronted as the matrix topic)

The subordinate clitic ми remains directly after its да in every version. Other constituents move to manage topic and focus.

Placement diagnostic

Find every да and ask whether it heads a finite clause. If it does, underline the clitics that belong to that clause and move them immediately after да in neutral order. Keep не beside the finite verb, and place ли first if the sequence is да ли.

💡
The string да ли has the order да–ли–cluster; ordinary complement да has да–cluster. Do not insert a subject between these opening elements.

Common Mistakes

❌ Рекла је да Ана ми пошаље адресу.

Incorrect neutral placement — clitic ми normally follows да before the subordinate subject.

✅ Рекла је да ми Ана пошаље адресу.

She said that Ana should send me the address.

❌ Морам да пошаљем ти га вечерас.

Incorrect — dative ти and accusative га belong after да, not after the lexical verb.

✅ Морам да ти га пошаљем вечерас.

I have to send it to you tonight.

❌ Надам се да не ми се подсмева.

Incorrect — the enclitics ми се follow да, while не remains immediately before the finite verb.

✅ Надам се да ми се не подсмева.

I hope he is not making fun of me.

❌ Не знам да су ли већ кренули.

Incorrect — in the embedded question, ли precedes auxiliary су after да.

✅ Не знам да ли су већ кренули ка аеродрому.

I do not know whether they have already left for the airport.

Practice

  1. Reorder these neutral да-clause elements: да / Ана / ми / га / покаже; да / се / не / журимо; да / су / вам / их / послали. Identify the cluster slots.
  2. Express “I need to return it to her” with да + present and with an infinitive. Then change the intended actor to “you” and explain why only the finite да clause marks that new subject clearly.

Key Takeaways

  • Every finite да clause creates a new clitic domain, normally beginning да + cluster.
  • Object clitics precede the lexical present form; negator не remains with that finite verb.
  • Embedded да ли has ли before the rest of the cluster.
  • Same-subject infinitives remain standard alongside many да + present complements; different subjects require finite person marking.
  • Topic and focus may reorder full constituents, but they do not license да + subject + clitic as the neutral pattern.
