da + present vs the Infinitive

Serbian has two standard ways to complement many modal, phase, and volitional verbs: an infinitive (морам отићи) and да + present (морам да одем). They overlap when both verbs have the same understood subject, but they are not universal synonyms. A finite да clause can identify another subject, carry its own tense in content uses, and host its own clitics; an infinitive cannot.

The decision begins with clause structure and the governing predicate, not with the English word to.

The Two Forms

The infinitive has no person, number, tense, or gender:

После састанка морам позвати рачуновођу.

After the meeting I have to call the accountant.

First-person singular comes only from морам. The understood caller is therefore the same person who has the obligation.

Да + present is finite and marks its subject:

После састанка морам да позовем рачуновођу.

After the meeting I have to call the accountant.

Present form позовем is first-person singular. It does not mean that the call is happening now; after a modal, the construction presents a necessary, possible, intended, or desired action.

💡
Do not translate the morphology word by word. In морам да позовем, позовем is formally present but the whole construction means “I have to call.”

Decision 1: Does the Lower Action Have a Different Subject?

If the second action has an expressed subject different from the matrix subject, choose a finite да clause.

Желим да Јелена прва прочита предлог.

I want Jelena to read the proposal first.

Matrix subject “I” is encoded by желим; embedded nominative Јелена controls third-person прочита. An infinitive cannot carry that contrast.

Compare the same-subject readings:

Желим прва прочитати предлог.

I want to be the first to read the proposal. (female speaker; infinitive, somewhat more concise/written)

Желим да прва прочитам предлог.

I want to be the first to read the proposal. (female speaker)

Both mean that the speaker will read. Feminine прва agrees with the speaker, while first-person прочитам makes the subject overt only in the finite version.

English object-plus-infinitive syntax does not transfer: I want Jelena to read requires желим да Јелена прочита, not a name inserted before an infinitive.

Decision 2: Does the Governor License Both?

Many common modals allow either form with a shared subject:

PredicateInfinitiveда + present
моћимогу сачекатимогу да сачекам
моратиморамо кренутиморамо да кренемо
сметисмете ућисмете да уђете
желетижели разговаратижели да разговара

Можемо сачекати следећи воз ако овај буде пун.

We can wait for the next train if this one is full.

Можемо да сачекамо следећи воз ако овај буде пун.

We can wait for the next train if this one is full.

For these same-subject modal sentences, both are standard. Да + present is highly frequent in contemporary everyday Serbian. The infinitive remains standard, common in compact written expression and ordinary for many speakers.

Phase verbs почети, наставити, престати also permit both complement shapes, but the embedded activity is normally imperfective:

После паузе су наставили да расправљају о буџету.

After the break they continued discussing the budget.

После паузе су наставили расправљати о буџету.

After the break they continued discussing the budget.

Changing да расправљају to расправљати does not change the aspect rule. Complement selection and aspect selection are separate decisions.

Other predicates select a finite content clause rather than an infinitival alternative:

Приметили смо да недостају два потписа.

We noticed that two signatures were missing.

The clause states what was noticed. Приметили смо недостајати... is not a standard complement. Learn each predicate with its construction, as English to and that do not predict Serbian government reliably.

Decision 3: Is да Introducing Content or Replacing an Infinitive?

Not every да clause is да + present of the modal type. Content да can contain past, present, future, or conditional forms:

Рекла је да је воз каснио и да ће стићи после девет.

She said that the train had been late and would arrive after nine.

The first да clause contains a perfect; the second contains Future I. They report two propositions. There is no infinitive alternative that preserves this tense structure.

By contrast, хоћу да одем may be a volitional complement:

Хоћу да одем раније јер се не осећам добро.

I want to leave early because I don't feel well.

Stressed хоћу means “I want/am willing.” Do not automatically interpret it as the future auxiliary ћу.

Decision 4: Is the Construction Future I?

The neutral morphological Future I uses an unstressed хтети auxiliary plus an infinitive:

Сутра ћу завршити коначну верзију извештаја.

Tomorrow I will finish the final version of the report.

Everyday Serbian also widely uses ћу да + present:

Сутра ћу да завршим коначну верзију извештаја.

Tomorrow I'm going to finish the final version of the report. (informal/everyday)

The second is common, especially in speech (informal/everyday), but the infinitival form is the most portable neutral model across registers. Full хоћу да завршим can instead foreground volition: “I want/am willing to finish.” Stress and context distinguish it from clitic ћу.

Spelling of -ти/-ћи Future I belongs on the Future I page; do not let the orthographic fusion question determine complement choice.

Decision 5: Purpose and Instructions

Plain да + present is productive for purpose and can make the intended actor explicit:

Позвала сам Николу да заједно проверимо све адресе.

I called Nikola so that we could check all the addresses together. (female speaker)

First-person plural проверимо includes the speaker and Nikola. An infinitive could not express that participant relation by itself.

Same-subject purpose infinitives occur after motion and intention predicates for many speakers, but distribution is more limited and regionally variable than productive purpose да:

Идем да купим хлеб пре него што се продавница затвори.

I'm going to buy bread before the shop closes.

Идем купити хлеб is standard or ordinary for some Serbian speakers and especially common in more western BCMS usage, while others strongly prefer идем да купим. Use да + present as the broadly available productive choice; label local preferences rather than ranking standards.

Agentless instructions favor the infinitive:

Пре употребе добро промућкати боцу.

Shake the bottle well before use. (instructional label)

This label does not address a named person. In conversation, Пре употребе добро промућкајте боцу directly addresses the user.

Register and Regional Tendencies

The opposition is not “correct infinitive versus incorrect да,” nor the reverse. Contemporary Serbian uses both.

  • Да + present is especially frequent in everyday speech in Serbia and is fully standard in modal, phase, and volitional environments.
  • The infinitive remains standard Serbian and is frequent in Future I, instructions, concise prose, and many speakers' ordinary complement usage.
  • Infinitive frequency is generally greater in western and Ijekavian usage and in Croatian; Bosnian and Montenegrin usage also varies. These are tendencies across related standards and regions, not identity tests.
  • A particular verb may prefer one construction regardless of a speaker's general regional pattern.

No honest one-line regional rule replaces the subject and government tests.

Clitics Reveal the Structural Difference

With да + present, the complement opens its own finite domain:

Морам да јој га пошаљем до подне.

I have to send it to her by noon.

With an infinitive, the object clitics join the matrix early cluster:

Морам јој га послати до подне.

I have to send it to her by noon.

In both, dative јој precedes accusative га. The detailed hosting contrast is on Clitics in Modal and Infinitival Complements.

Decision Tree

  1. Is this a content proposition after know/say/notice/hope? Use finite да with the tense the proposition requires.
  2. Does the lower action have a different or explicitly named subject? Use a finite да clause.
  3. Is it neutral Future I? Prefer auxiliary + infinitive as the portable model; recognize everyday ћу да + present.
  4. Is it an agentless sign or instruction? The infinitive is often the natural compact form.
  5. Does the governing modal, phase, or volitional verb allow both with one subject? Choose either standard form according to predicate, register, region, and rhythm.
  6. After choosing, rebuild person, aspect, and clitic placement. These do not disappear merely because the English translation is the same.
💡
The subject test decides non-overlap; lexical government and discourse decide much of the remaining overlap. A dictionary gloss such as “want” or “can” is only the beginning.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Make each alternative necessary

Express “I want to leave” with both a same-subject infinitive and да + present. Then express “I want Ana to leave,” where only the finite structure can identify Ana as the lower subject.

Task 2: Diagnose four environments

Choose a form for a bottle label, a neutral future promise, a reported past fact, and a same-subject obligation in conversation. Name the cue—agentlessness, Future I, content tense, or register—before writing the sentence.

Common Mistakes

Giving an infinitive its own expressed subject

❌ Надам се Ана стићи пре мрака.

Incorrect—an infinitive cannot carry Ана as an independent subject in this content complement.

✅ Надам се да ће Ана стићи пре мрака.

I hope Ana will arrive before dark.

Freezing the present form in first person

❌ Желимо да завршим посао до петка.

Incorrect for the intended shared subject ‘we’—the verb after да must be first-person plural.

✅ Желимо да завршимо посао до петка.

We want to finish the work by Friday.

Declaring the infinitive non-Serbian

❌ Облик „могу сачекати“ није правилан у стандардном српском.

Incorrect claim—the same-subject infinitive is standard Serbian, although usage frequency varies.

✅ Могу сачекати овде или могу да се вратим касније.

I can wait here or I can come back later.

Reading modal да + present as present time

❌ „Морамо да кренемо сутра“ је немогуће јер је кренемо садашње време.

Incorrect analysis—the modal construction can refer to a necessary future action.

✅ Морамо да кренемо сутра пре седам.

We have to leave tomorrow before seven.

Key Takeaways

  • Both the infinitive and да + present are standard with many same-subject predicates.
  • A different lower subject requires a finite clause; an infinitive cannot mark that participant.
  • Content да is not an infinitive replacement and can contain past, future, or conditional forms.
  • Future I, agentless instructions, predicate preference, register, and regional usage all influence the choice.
