Serbian object clitics do not merely stand “before the verb.” Their position depends on whether the complement is an infinitive or a finite да + present clause. With an infinitive, the modal and infinitive form one practical placement domain, so object clitics normally join the matrix second-position cluster. A finite да clause has its own early position, and the complement's clitics normally follow да.
This page gives dependable choices for ordinary standard Serbian. Genuine variation in long-distance placement is treated separately on the advanced clitic-climbing page.
One Message, Two Complement Types
Start with the same proposition: “I must send the photographs to her tonight.” The dative clitic јој means “to her,” and accusative их replaces plural фотографије.
Морам да јој их пошаљем вечерас.
I have to send her the photographs tonight.
Here the structure is морам [да јој их пошаљем]. The finite complement begins with да, which hosts its own cluster: да | јој (dative) | их (accusative) | пошаљем.
Морам јој их послати вечерас.
I have to send her the photographs tonight.
With the infinitive, the practical structure is [морам јој их] послати. There is no finite complementizer to open another placement domain, so јој их joins the matrix clause's early cluster. The internal order is unchanged: dative before accusative.
Both constructions are standard. Да + present is extremely common in contemporary Serbian conversation; the infinitive remains standard and productive, especially in concise written expression, instructions, and with many speakers' ordinary usage. Their distribution varies by speaker, predicate, and style. Neither is universally wrong.
Auxiliary and Object Clitics in One Matrix Cluster
When a sentence also contains an auxiliary clitic, the infinitival pattern makes the full hierarchy visible. Auxiliary clitics precede pronominal clitics; within the pronouns, dative precedes accusative.
Вероватно ћу му га морати показати пре састанка.
I will probably have to show it to him before the meeting.
The first constituent вероватно is followed by the matrix cluster ћу | му | га: Future I auxiliary, dative object, accusative object. Морати показати follows as the verbal sequence.
Replacing the infinitive with a finite да clause divides the clitics between two hosts:
Вероватно ћу морати да му га покажем пре састанка.
I will probably have to show it to him before the meeting.
Now ћу belongs to the matrix clause after вероватно, while му га belongs after subordinate да: вероватно | ћу | морати [да | му | га | покажем]. English keeps “will” and “have to” together and places pronouns after “show”; copying that linear sequence into Serbian misses both second-position domains.
An initial subject works the same way:
Милица ће нам га моћи донети после посла.
Milica will be able to bring it to us after work.
After first constituent Милица, the cluster is ће | нам | га. The finite subject is not a special trigger; any suitable first constituent can precede the second-position cluster.
Хтети: Volition, a Complement, and Future I
Full хтети can mean “want” or “be willing” and take a finite да complement. The embedded clitics then follow да.
Хоћу да ти га покажем чим стигнемо кући.
I want to show it to you as soon as we get home.
The host annotation is хоћу [да | ти | га | покажем]. Хоћу is stressed lexical “want,” not the unstressed Future I auxiliary.
An infinitive is also possible with хтети, though its frequency and stylistic feel vary among speakers:
Хтео сам ти се јавити раније, али ми се телефон испразнио.
I wanted to contact you earlier, but my phone died.
This somewhat more written or regionally variable pattern has the matrix cluster сам | ти | се after the l-participle хтео. The finite alternative Хтео сам да ти се јавим places ти се after да and is broadly neutral in Serbian.
Do not confuse lexical хоћу да... with neutral Future I:
Послаћу ти уговор сутра ујутру.
I will send you the contract tomorrow morning.
Послаћу is the fused Future I form of a -ти infinitive; ти then occupies its ordinary early object-clitic position. Хоћу да ти пошаљем уговор can express intention or willingness—“I want/am willing to send it”—rather than simply locating the event in the future. See Future I for the full contrast.
Finite да Creates a New Placement Domain
A finite да clause can mark person independently and can even have its own overt subject. Its clitics belong to that subordinate clause, not automatically to the matrix cluster.
Професор жели да му студенти пошаљу питања до петка.
The professor wants the students to send him their questions by Friday.
The embedded subject студенти differs from the matrix subject професор. The dative му follows да and refers to the professor. An infinitive would normally imply a same-subject reading and cannot simply replace this finite clause without changing who sends the questions.
Надамо се да ће нам их редакција вратити до подне.
We hope that the editorial team will return them to us by noon.
Here the embedded cluster is ће | нам | их after да. The embedded subject редакција may follow the cluster because Serbian case marking identifies its role. That order variation does not make нам or редакција part of the matrix clause.
A Safe Production Procedure
- Identify each finite clause. Each normally supplies its own early clitic position.
- With да + present, put complement clitics after да: да му га покажем.
- With an infinitive after a modal, put object clitics in the matrix cluster: могу му га показати.
- Order a cluster as auxiliary, dative, accusative, се, following the detailed qualifications on cluster order.
- Never begin an independent declarative sentence with an unstressed object or auxiliary clitic.
The matrix placement of a clitic across да is attested with certain predicates and speakers, but it is not necessary for sound learner production. Use the local да + clitic pattern here; consult the variation page before analyzing examples such as Морам му да кажем.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Change the complement, not the message
Recast Можемо да јој га пошаљемо данас with an infinitive. Move јој га into the matrix placement domain and preserve dative-before-accusative order.
Task 2: Annotate the hosts
In Сутра ћемо морати да им их покажемо, mark the matrix host and the subordinate host. Then replace да им их покажемо with an infinitive and rebuild the single matrix cluster.
Common Mistakes
Starting with an unstressed clitic
❌ Му га морам послати пре ручка.
Incorrect—unstressed му га cannot open an independent neutral declarative sentence.
✅ Морам му га послати пре ручка.
I have to send it to him before lunch.
Leaving infinitival object clitics after the infinitive
❌ Ана може донети нам кључ сутра.
Incorrect—нам must occupy the matrix clitic position, not follow the infinitive as English 'to us' would.
✅ Ана нам може донети кључ сутра.
Ana can bring us the key tomorrow.
Putting a local да-clause clitic after its verb
❌ Желим да покажем ти снимак насамо.
Incorrect—ти belongs immediately after да in this finite complement.
✅ Желим да ти покажем снимак насамо.
I want to show you the recording in private.
Treating the two complement types as identical
❌ Морамо да објаснити им промену.
Incorrect—да requires a finite present form, and the dative clitic follows да.
✅ Морамо да им објаснимо промену.
We have to explain the change to them.
Key Takeaways
- Морам јој их послати has one practical matrix cluster; морам да јој их пошаљем has a separate finite да-clause cluster.
- Auxiliary clitics and object clitics preserve their internal order even when the complement type changes.
- A finite да complement can mark a different subject; an infinitive normally cannot be substituted mechanically.
- Use local placement after да as the dependable neutral choice; genuine climbing variation belongs to the dedicated advanced page.
