Clitic Climbing and Restructuring Variation

In a complex predicate, a Serbian object or reflexive clitic may surface in the higher clause even though its semantic role belongs to the lower verb. Compare Јелена мора да му пошаље уговор with Јелена му мора послати уговор. Dative му is the recipient of пошаље/послати, but in the infinitival version it joins the clitic domain of finite мора. This is conventionally called clitic climbing.

The phenomenon is not a mechanical permission to move clitics across any verb. It is strongest in tightly integrated, event-like structures with modals, phase verbs, and certain same-subject infinitival or да + present complements. With finite да-complements, judgments are gradient and vary by predicate, prosody, region, and speaker. Contemporary experimental work therefore supports tendencies, not a single categorical list.

Three neutral baselines

Start from these productive patterns:

ComplementTypical clitic locationExample frame
да + present, no climbinginside the embedded domain after дамора да му пошаље
infinitive with restructuring verbin the matrix second-position clusterму мора послати
да + present with climbingmatrix cluster; acceptance variesму мора да пошаље

Јелена мора да му пошаље уговор до подне.

Jelena has to send him the contract by noon.

Јелена му мора послати уговор до подне.

Jelena has to send him the contract by noon.

Јелена му мора да пошаље уговор до подне.

Jelena has to send him the contract by noon. (Climbing from a да-complement; acceptable for many speakers.)

The first two are stable neutral models. The third is widespread with a tightly integrated modal construction but not equally preferred by every speaker or in every style. Do not “correct” all such examples, and do not infer that the pattern extends to every да-clause.

Both infinitive and same-subject да + present are standard Serbian. Their relative frequency varies across regions, registers, and individual usage; neither should be declared universally wrong.

💡
For reliable production, keep the clitic after да in a finite complement, or place it in the matrix cluster with an infinitive. Recognize climbed да patterns as real Serbian whose acceptability depends on the restructuring environment.

What restructuring means

A restructuring predicate and its complement can behave like one tightly integrated event. Modals such as морати, моћи, смети, phase verbs such as почети, наставити, престати, and some volitional or attempt predicates often create this environment.

Марко је почео да га чита чим је стигао кући.

Marko began reading it as soon as he got home.

Марко га је почео читати чим је стигао кући.

Marko began reading it as soon as he got home.

Марко га је почео да чита чим је стигао кући.

Marko began reading it as soon as he got home. (Climbed да-pattern; speaker-sensitive.)

In all three, га is the object of “read,” not “begin.” Phase почети selects an ongoing activity, so lower читати/чита is imperfective. Clitic placement does not change that aspectual requirement.

Reflexive се participates in the same structural contrast:

Мораш да се пријавиш најкасније до петка.

You have to register by Friday at the latest.

Мораш се пријавити најкасније до петка.

You have to register by Friday at the latest.

The first gives се a local host inside the да domain. In the infinitival version, finite мораш provides the only suitable early host.

Infinitives and why the clitic appears high

An infinitive has no finite second-position domain comparable to a full Serbian clause. With a restructuring verb, its weak pronouns therefore normally join the matrix clitic cluster.

Милица му га жели показати пре састанка.

Milica wants to show it to him before the meeting.

Here both му and га belong semantically to показати, but their surface position is after first constituent Милица. A full stressed phrase can remain low because it is not a clitic:

Милица жели показати нацрт новом директору, а не старом.

Milica wants to show the draft to the new director, not the old one.

Do not place a weak clitic after the infinitive on the model of Romance languages. Serbian показати му га can occur only under special prosodic or marked configurations and is not the neutral learner pattern; use му га показати within the higher domain.

Internal order does not change during climbing

Climbing relocates the cluster's domain, not the order of its members. Dative precedes accusative: му га. Auxiliary and reflexive positions follow the same cluster rules as elsewhere.

Јелена му га мора послати данас.

Jelena has to send it to him today.

Јелена мора да му га пошаље данас.

Jelena has to send it to him today.

Јелена му га не мора послати данас.

Jelena doesn't have to send it to him today.

Negation attaches to finite мора, while му га still occupies the early cluster. Neither climbing nor negation licenses га му in the intended neutral order.

The clitic-cluster chart gives the complete auxiliary–dative–accusative–reflexive ordering, including the special placement of је.

Да-complements form stronger or weaker boundaries

Local placement after да is always the safest baseline:

Никола покушава да јој објасни зашто рок мора да се помери.

Nikola is trying to explain to her why the deadline has to be moved.

With event-like, same-subject complements, many speakers also accept a matrix clitic: Никола јој покушава да објасни... Acceptance is not uniform. The more independently propositional the complement is, the less available climbing becomes.

❌ Никола јој тврди да је директор већ одговорио.

Rejected in the intended reading—тврди selects an independent proposition, so јој cannot climb out as the object of одговорио.

✅ Никола тврди да јој је директор већ одговорио.

Nikola claims that the director has already replied to her.

The contrast is semantic and structural. Морати да пошаље describes one modalized sending event; тврдити да је одговорио relates a claiming event to a proposition with its own subject and tense.

A different embedded subject blocks the tight reading

Restructuring is strongest when the matrix and embedded subject are understood as the same participant. An overt different subject signals a fuller embedded clause and strongly resists climbing.

❌ Јелена јој жели да Петар донесе оригинал уговора.

Rejected in the intended reading—the embedded dative јој cannot normally climb across the distinct subject Петар.

✅ Јелена жели да јој Петар донесе оригинал уговора.

Jelena wants Petar to bring her the original contract.

This diagnostic is stronger than memorizing a verb list. The same matrix verb can occur with a small same-subject event complement or a fuller clause, and the latter establishes a clearer boundary.

Second position is recalculated in the chosen domain

A climbed clitic cannot stand first. It appears after the first prosodic-syntactic constituent of the matrix domain.

Данас му Јелена мора послати уговор.

Today Jelena has to send him the contract.

Уговор му Јелена мора послати данас, а рачун може сутра.

The contract Jelena has to send him today; the invoice can wait until tomorrow.

Јелена му мора послати уговор данас, а не рачун.

Jelena has to send him the contract today, not the invoice.

These orders package information differently:

  • Данас establishes a time frame.
  • Fronted Уговор is a contrastive topic against рачун.
  • Final contrast а не рачун makes the object the narrow focus.

The clitic remains early in each version, but “early” is calculated after the first constituent. Serbian word order is flexible, not free: moving the object or time expression changes topic, focus, and prosody.

💡
Climbing answers “which clause hosts the clitic?” Second position then answers “where inside that domain does the cluster surface?” Keep those two decisions separate.

A practical diagnostic

Use four questions when judging a proposed climb:

  1. Is the matrix predicate modal, phase-like, volitional, or an attempt predicate rather than a reporting or belief verb?
  2. Do both verbs describe one tightly integrated event?
  3. Is the understood subject the same?
  4. Can the clitic cluster occupy a natural second position in the matrix prosodic phrase?

Four “yes” answers favor climbing; an independent proposition, different subject, pause before да, or first-position clitic disfavors it. This is a gradient diagnostic, not a proof that every speaker must accept the result.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Keep the proposition, change the complement

Ана мора да му врати књигу. — Ана му мора вратити књигу.

Ana has to return the book to him. — Ana has to return the book to him. Answer: local му after да becomes a matrix clitic with the infinitive.

Task 2: Test the boundary

Ана каже да му је Лука вратио књигу.

Ana says that Luka returned the book to him. Answer: independent proposition plus distinct subject Luka; keep му inside the embedded clause and do not climb it.

Common Mistakes

Treating every да-clause as transparent

❌ Марија га верује да је Петар позвао.

Incorrect—верује selects a propositional clause; га cannot climb from позвао.

✅ Марија верује да га је Петар позвао.

Marija believes that Petar called him.

Putting a clitic first

❌ Му га мораш послати пре подне.

Incorrect—weak clitics cannot begin the clause.

✅ Мораш му га послати пре подне.

You have to send it to him before noon.

Scrambling the internal cluster

❌ Јелена га му може донети сутра.

Incorrect in the neutral cluster—dative му precedes accusative га.

✅ Јелена му га може донети сутра.

Jelena can bring it to him tomorrow.

Declaring one complement universally wrong

❌ Само мораш послати је правилно; мораш да пошаљеш није српски.

Incorrect claim—both the infinitive and same-subject да + present are standard Serbian.

✅ Мораш послати пријаву. Мораш да пошаљеш пријаву.

You must send the application. Both constructions are standard.

Moving words without tracking focus

❌ Сваки ред речи значи потпуно исто јер српски има слободан ред речи.

Incorrect claim—placement changes topic, focus, prosody, and sometimes acceptability.

✅ Уговор му мораш послати данас, а рачун сутра.

The contract you must send him today, and the invoice tomorrow. (Contrastive topic)

Key Takeaways

  • Clitic climbing places a lower verb's clitic in the higher second-position domain.
  • Infinitival restructuring strongly favors a matrix cluster; local placement after да is the safest finite baseline.
  • Climbed да patterns are real but gradient across predicates, clause sizes, speakers, and prosodies.
  • Different embedded subjects and propositional predicates resist climbing.
  • Climbing never licenses first-position clitics or changes internal cluster order.
  • Alternative orders can preserve the proposition while changing topic and focus.
