Clitics after Conjunctions and Subordinators

Every coordinated or subordinate clause creates a new domain for Serbian enclitics, but connectors do not all behave alike. А, и, and coordinating ни normally do not host an enclitic cluster by themselves; али, него, па, те, или, and нити can. Subordinators such as да, кад, ако, јер, чим, иако also provide the opening unit after which clitics naturally appear.

This page assumes the semantic distinctions among the connectors established in Coordinating Conjunctions and concentrates on their hosting behavior.

The core hosting contrast

Connector typeTypical beginning of its clauseExample pattern

This is a lexical distinction among connectors, not a matter of comma length.

Jelena stayed home, while Marko went to the concert.

Jelena wanted to go, but she did not like the program.

In the first sentence, accented subject Марко intervenes after а and hosts је. In the second, али itself supports the cluster јој-се.

💡
After a connector, do not ask only “Is this the second word?” Ask whether that particular connector can count as the first prosodic-syntactic unit for enclitic placement.

А, и, and ни need more material

The short coordinators а and и are proclitic-like: they lean forward and do not normally provide the accented host an enclitic needs. Add a subject, adverbial, object, or another accented unit before the cluster.

We will prepare the hall, while you will welcome the guests.

Ana arrived and immediately joined the conversation.

In the second coordinated predicate, accented одмах provides the first unit before се. When closely coordinated verbs share a subject, Serbian may omit repeated auxiliaries; that is ellipsis, not permission for и се as an ordinary clause opening.

Coordinating negative ни behaves like и, whereas fuller нити can introduce its cluster directly.

Petar did not get in touch, and Milica did not send a message either.

Petar did not contact us, nor did Milica send us an explanation.

The first sentence uses repeated ни + accented subject + cluster.

Али, него, па, те, and или can host

These coordinators can be followed immediately by an enclitic cluster.

We reserved a table, but they gave us the wrong time.

We did not cancel the trip; we moved it to next week instead.

The train was late, so we sent them a message.

The committee accepted the report and consequently forwarded it to management. (formal)

Hurry up or you will miss the last bus.

Те is more characteristic of (formal) and edited prose. Па is neutral and frequent in speech. The placement rule does not make them semantic synonyms: connector choice still expresses consequence, sequence, correction, contrast, or alternative.

Subordinators start their own domain

Subordinators are integrated into the clause they introduce and normally precede its cluster directly.

When you contact me, I will explain what happened.

If they have already sent it to you, check the contract number.

We did not go in because the guard told us to wait.

Although she did not feel well, she stayed until the end of the performance.

Each subordinate clause restarts the calculation: кад-ми-се, ако-су-вам-га, јер-нам-је, иако-се. The main clause then has its own independent cluster.

Compound subordinators are interpreted as units. In зато што, the cluster follows што; in будући да, it follows да; in као да, it follows да.

We postponed our departure because our car broke down.

He spoke as though everything had already been familiar to him.

One proposition after different connectors

The factual core “they sent us the revised plan” can enter discourse in several ways:

Ми смо тражили измене, а они су нам послали нови план.

We requested changes, while they sent us a new plan. (parallel topics)

The deadline had already passed, but they sent us a new plan. (blocked expectation)

They accepted the comments, so they sent us a new plan. (result)

The clause begins а они су нам, but али су нам and па су нам. The connector changes both discourse relation and what can host the clitics.

Punctuation and prosody

A comma marks a clause boundary or discourse relation; it does not block the new cluster. А, али, него normally follow a comma in coordination, while close additive и and simple или normally do not. Fronted subordinate clauses take a following comma, but following integrated clauses often do not.

Speech can place an intonational break after a connector for hesitation or afterthought. Once the connector is detached—Али… он је ипак дошао—the following clause begins anew, and он hosts је. That expressive punctuation is not the neutral pattern

Placement diagnostic

Replace the connector while keeping the proposition constant. If али је стигао becomes а он је стигао, the contrast confirms the hosting class. Then check the cluster internally: али ми га је, not али је ми га.

💡
A connector can license immediate placement without changing cluster order. External host choice and internal order remain two separate constraints.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect — short а cannot host auxiliary смо by itself.

The rain stopped, and we headed toward the station.

Incorrect — coordinating и does not by itself host reflexive се.

Marko arrived and changed clothes immediately.

Incorrect cluster order — dative ми precedes се, but auxiliary је is omitted beside се in this 3sg perfect.

The offer is expensive, but I liked it.

Incorrect neutral placement — dative нам follows subordinator ако near the clause beginning.

If they send us the contract, we will check every clause.

Practice

  1. Complete five clause beginnings with a natural host and cluster: а _ смо, и _ се, али су нам, па ми је, или ћете. Explain why the first two require extra accented material.
  2. Express the same result after а, али, and па: “they sent us a replacement.” Supply a first clause that makes each relation coherent, then annotate the clitic domain and punctuation.

Key Takeaways

  • А, и, ни normally need an accented constituent before a clitic cluster.
  • Али, него, па, те, или, нити can host a following cluster directly.
  • Subordinators such as да, кад, ако, јер, чим, иако begin their own clitic domain.
  • Punctuation signals structure, but connector-specific hosting and prosody determine placement.
  • Every new clause restarts second-position calculation without changing the cluster's internal order.
