Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions connect units of equal grammatical status: words, phrases, or independent clauses. Serbian и adds, а juxtaposes or shifts the point of comparison, али introduces a stronger contrary-to-expectation contrast, или presents alternatives, and него replaces a rejected alternative after negation. Connector choice therefore tells the listener how the second unit should be interpreted, not merely that another idea follows.

Милица је проверила адресу и послала пакет пре подне.

Milica checked the address and sent the package before noon.

Милица ради од куће, а Никола сваког дана иде у канцеларију.

Milica works from home, whereas Nikola goes to the office every day.

Понуда је повољна, али је рок за одлуку сувише кратак.

The offer is favorable, but the deadline for a decision is too short.

💡
Choose the connector from the discourse relation: same-direction addition (и), parallel difference (а), frustrated expectation (али), alternative (или), or correction after negation (него).

И: additive coordination

И joins compatible items and clauses. When the clauses form one close addition or sequence, Serbian normally does not put a comma before и.

Угасила је рачунар и закључала канцеларију.

She turned off the computer and locked the office.

Воз је стигао на време и сви путници су мирно изашли.

The train arrived on time and all the passengers got off calmly.

The two verbs may share a subject, as in the first sentence, or have separate subjects, as in the second. A shared tense is common but not required: the conjunction does not impose tense or aspect.

Сада проверавамо податке и сутра ћемо послати коначан извештај.

We are checking the data now, and tomorrow we will send the final report.

Repeated и … и emphasizes inclusion of both alternatives. It is a correlative pair, not a reason to translate each и mechanically as a separate English and.

На састанку су говорили и запослени и представници управе.

Both employees and management representatives spoke at the meeting.

Negative ни … ни coordinates excluded items. The verb remains negated because standard Serbian uses negative concord.

Нисмо добили ни потврду ни објашњење.

We received neither a confirmation nor an explanation.

А: juxtaposition and topic shift

А places two ideas side by side and highlights a difference in subject, property, time, or viewpoint. English may translate it as and, while, whereas, or mild but. It does not necessarily signal that the first statement created an expectation which the second defeats.

Ја ћу припремити презентацију, а ти провери бројеве у табели.

I'll prepare the presentation, and you check the figures in the table.

Ујутру је било сунчано, а поподне је почела јака киша.

It was sunny in the morning, whereas heavy rain began in the afternoon.

The comma before а marks the coordinate boundary. The second clause can be shorter because contrast supplies what is understood.

Мени одговара петак, а теби?

Friday works for me; what about you?

Here the omitted meaning after теби is recoverable from the first clause. А shifts the conversational center from me to you.

Али: contrary to expectation

Али adds a stronger adversative relation. The second unit limits, contradicts, or unexpectedly overrides an inference invited by the first.

Хотел је близу центра, али је ноћу прилично бучан.

The hotel is near the center, but it is quite noisy at night.

Позвали смо такси, али није стигао ни после пола сата.

We called a taxi, but it had not arrived even after half an hour.

Али can coordinate phrases as well as complete clauses:

Стан је мали, али веома добро распоређен.

The apartment is small but very well laid out.

Serbian normally writes the comma before али even where English punctuation might vary. The more detailed и / а / али decision guide develops the semantic boundary.

Или: alternatives and reformulation

Single или joins alternatives without a comma when they form one integrated choice.

Можемо да се нађемо у четвртак или петак после посла.

We can meet on Thursday or Friday after work.

Да ли желите потврду електронском поштом или обичном поштом?

Would you like the confirmation by email or by regular mail?

Repeated или … или makes the alternatives exhaustive or emphatic. When each member is a full clause, a comma clearly separates the two larger units.

Или ћемо данас донети одлуку, или ћемо одложити цео пројекат.

Either we'll make a decision today, or we'll postpone the entire project.

Или can also introduce a clarifying alternative close to English or rather, but explicit односно is often clearer in formal writing.

Него after a negated alternative

Corrective него says “not X, but rather Y.” The first member must normally contain negation or a negative expression; него then supplies the replacement.

Не путујемо у суботу, него у недељу рано ујутру.

We're not traveling on Saturday, but rather early Sunday morning.

Није позвала мене, него моју колегиницу.

She didn't call me; she called my colleague instead.

Close већ can perform the same corrective job, especially in careful prose: не у суботу, већ у недељу. Али is different: it adds an obstacle or contrast without replacing a denied constituent.

Comparative него after words such as више, боље, старији is not this corrective coordination. In an integrated comparison such as боље него јуче, there is normally no comma.

Данас се осећам боље него јуче, али још нисам спреман за посао.

I feel better today than yesterday, but I'm not ready for work yet. (male speaker)

Close connectors: па and те

Па often presents the second clause as the next event or result: “and then/so.” Те also links a sequence or consequence but is more common in edited and (formal) prose than in spontaneous conversation.

Завршили смо раније, па смо отишли на ручак.

We finished early, so we went to lunch.

Комисија је размотрила жалбу те је затражила додатну документацију.

The committee considered the appeal and consequently requested additional documentation. (formal)

Neither is a decorative substitute for и. Па guides the reader toward sequence or consequence; те packages a tight continuation in a more written register.

Clitics after a conjunction

Each coordinated clause has its own clitic domain. After coordinators such as али, него, па, те, and или, a clitic cluster can stand immediately after the connector. The short proclitic coordinators а, и, and ни are different: they do not themselves provide the accented host that an enclitic needs, so another constituent normally comes before the cluster: а ја сам, и они су. With clause-level negative addition, нити can host a clitic: нити му је потребан.

Послала сам му поруку, али ми се није јавио.

I sent him a message, but he did not get back to me. (female speaker)

In the first clause сам му contains auxiliary plus dative. In the second, ми се follows али and preserves dative-before-се order. Do not move се after the verb to imitate English.

Она је остала у сали, а ја сам се вратио у канцеларију.

She stayed in the hall, while I returned to the office. (male speaker)

The repeated auxiliaries belong to different clauses and agree with their own subjects.

Punctuation diagnostics

Use no comma before ordinary additive и or simple alternative или. Use a comma before adversative а, али, него, већ. A comma can occur before и or или when it closes an inserted unit or marks a larger deliberately detached relation, but that is not the beginner default.

Позвали смо Ану и Марка, али Марко неће моћи да дође.

We invited Ana and Marko, but Marko will not be able to come.

Punctuation follows structure, not every pause. See Punctuation and Quotation Marks for subordinate-clause boundaries and inserted material.

💡
Before typing a comma, identify the connector. Default to no comma with close и/или coordination and to a comma with а/али/него/већ.

Short connected passage

Јелена је припремила предлог и послала га тиму, а Марко је проверио трошкове. Рок је био кратак, али су сви одговорили на време, па смо могли да пошаљемо пријаву истог дана.

Jelena prepared the proposal and sent it to the team, while Marko checked the costs. The deadline was short, but everyone replied on time, so we were able to submit the application that same day.

И groups Jelena's compatible actions; а changes subject and task; али marks the successful response as contrary to the difficulty; па presents the result.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the relation

Join five pairs using и, а, али, или, and него: two compatible actions, two different subjects, an unexpected obstacle, a choice, and a corrected date after negation. Add only the commas required by the chosen connector.

Task 2: Repair a short paragraph

Rewrite a three-clause note in which every boundary incorrectly has comma + и. Decide which relation is genuinely additive, which contrasts parallel subjects, and which blocks an expectation.

Common Mistakes

❌ Купила је хлеб, и млеко.

Incorrect — a simple pair joined by и does not take a comma.

✅ Купила је хлеб и млеко.

She bought bread and milk.

❌ Петар ради у Нишу а Ана студира у Београду.

Incorrect punctuation — contrastive а is preceded by a comma.

✅ Петар ради у Нишу, а Ана студира у Београду.

Petar works in Niš, while Ana studies in Belgrade.

❌ Рок је кратак, него можемо да завршимо посао.

Incorrect — него cannot introduce an ordinary obstacle or unexpected outcome when the first alternative has not been rejected.

✅ Рок је кратак, али можемо да завршимо посао.

The deadline is short, but we can finish the work.

❌ Можеш доћи аутобусом, или возом.

Incorrect in a simple integrated alternative — no comma is needed before или.

✅ Можеш доћи аутобусом или возом.

You can come by bus or by train.

❌ Послао сам јој адресу, али се ми није јавила.

Incorrect clitic order — dative ми must precede reflexive се in the cluster.

✅ Послао сам јој адресу, али ми се није јавила.

I sent her the address, but she did not get back to me. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • И adds, а juxtaposes, али blocks an expectation, или offers alternatives, and него replaces a negated option.
  • Do not put a comma before close и/или coordination; normally put one before а/али/него/већ.
  • Connector choice does not determine tense or aspect; each clause retains its own verb choices.
  • Each coordinated clause has its own natural clitic cluster.
  • Па and formal те encode sequence or consequence rather than serving as ornamental synonyms for и.
