English and and but divide up a semantic area that Serbian organizes in three especially frequent ways. И adds compatible information, а places two topics or properties in contrast, and али says that the second fact runs against an expectation created by the first. Learning this three-way choice makes Serbian discourse sound coherent rather than merely grammatically connected.
The decision in one table
| Ask about the second part | Choose | Default punctuation |
|---|---|---|
| Does it simply add or continue compatible information? | и | normally no comma |
| Does it switch topic or compare parallel people, times, or properties? | а | comma before а |
| Does it block an expectation or introduce a real obstacle? | али | comma before али |
Compare three ways of continuing a statement about Ana:
Ана живи у Крагујевцу и ради у једној издавачкој кући.
Ana lives in Kragujevac and works at a publishing house.
Ана живи у Крагујевцу, а њена сестра у Новом Саду.
Ana lives in Kragujevac, whereas her sister lives in Novi Sad.
Ана живи у Крагујевцу, али сваког дана ради у Београду.
Ana lives in Kragujevac, but she works in Belgrade every day.
The first sentence accumulates two facts about one topic. The second aligns Ana and her sister for comparison; the repeated verb is understood. The third invites an inference that living in Kragujevac would normally go with working nearby, then overturns it.
И: same-direction addition
Use и when the second word, phrase, or clause belongs to the same informational direction as the first. It can add an item, a simultaneous fact, or the next event in a close sequence.
За пут смо понели воду и нешто воћа.
We brought water and some fruit for the trip.
Проверила је све податке и послала исправљену верзију.
She checked all the data and sent the corrected version.
Марко припрема вечеру и Јелена поставља сто.
Marko is preparing dinner and Jelena is setting the table.
Different subjects do not automatically require а. In the last example, the two actions cooperate in one scene and no comparison is intended. If the speaker instead contrasts the assignments, а is natural: Марко припрема вечеру, а Јелена поставља сто “Marko is preparing dinner, while Jelena is setting the table.” The facts can remain identical while the connector changes their discourse relation.
И is also an additive focus particle meaning “also/even,” not a coordinator, when it stands directly before the focused item.
И Тамара долази на састанак.
Tamara is coming to the meeting too.
This does not join two clauses on the page; it adds Tamara to an understood set. Word order identifies the focus: Тамара долази и сутра means “Tamara is coming tomorrow too.”
А: parallel difference and topic shift
А is the connector English speakers most often underuse because its translation changes with context: and, while, whereas, but, or no direct conjunction in a conversational question. Its constant meaning is weaker and more structural: it directs attention to a difference or a new but related topic.
Ја више волим чај, а Милош пије само кафу.
I prefer tea, whereas Miloš drinks only coffee.
Зими се смркава рано, а лети дан траје много дуже.
In winter it gets dark early, while in summer daylight lasts much longer.
Мени одговара термин у шест, а вама?
Six o'clock works for me; how about you?
The paired elements can be subjects (ја — Милош), time frames (зими — лети), or discourse participants (мени — вама). The second clause may omit repeated material when the contrast makes it recoverable.
At the beginning of a response, а can attach a question or comment to the preceding topic while redirecting it.
Ја сам већ наручила. А ти, шта ћеш узети?
I've already ordered. What about you—what will you have? (female speaker)
This is not an adversative “but.” It is conversational topic management. English often uses and you?, what about …?, or simply begins a new sentence.
Али: an expectation fails
Choose али when the first part normally supports an expectation and the second part prevents, limits, or contradicts it.
Ресторан је био пун, али смо ипак брзо добили сто.
The restaurant was full, but we still got a table quickly.
Разумем сваку реч, али не разумем шта он заправо предлаже.
I understand every word, but I don't understand what he is actually proposing.
Желела је да остане дуже, али је морала да ухвати последњи воз.
She wanted to stay longer, but she had to catch the last train.
In the first sentence, a full restaurant predicts a wait; the quick table defeats that prediction. Ипак “nevertheless/still” reinforces the surprise but is optional. In the third, obligation blocks the desired action. Replacing али with а would turn the relation into a cooler juxtaposition and weaken the obstacle.
Али can coordinate smaller predicates or adjectives, not only full clauses.
Соба је једноставна, али удобна и веома чиста.
The room is simple but comfortable and very clean.
Here али contrasts једноставна with удобна, while и adds the compatible quality чиста.
The same situation, three presentations
Connector choice can change the point of a message without changing the events.
Лука је завршио извештај и отишао кући.
Luka finished the report and went home.
This is a straightforward sequence. Now compare two workers:
Лука је завршио извештај, а Маја је остала да провери табеле.
Luka finished the report, while Maja stayed to check the tables.
Finally, present Luka’s departure as surprising:
Лука је завршио извештај, али није отишао кући.
Luka finished the report, but he did not go home.
Serbian does not select tense or aspect mechanically from these connectors. The perfective forms завршио, отишао, остала, провери present bounded events or goals. An imperfective such as проверава could instead depict checking as an activity in progress. The connector organizes the relation between propositions; aspect organizes how each event is viewed.
Punctuation is part of the contrast
Ordinary и coordination has no comma. А and али are normally preceded by a comma, even when the coordinated material is short.
Купили смо карте и резервисали смештај, али још нисмо испланирали пут до аеродрома.
We bought the tickets and booked accommodation, but we still have not planned the trip to the airport.
Do not insert commas by ear. A pause may be audible before a long и clause, but the neutral punctuation rule still depends on structure. Conversely, contrastive а requires its comma even if speech has little pause. See Punctuation and Quotation Marks.
Close него is not a fourth general word for but. It replaces a rejected alternative after negation: Не у петак, него у суботу “Not on Friday, but on Saturday.” Али instead introduces an obstacle: У петак, али касно “On Friday, but late.”
Clitics in the second clause
Each coordinator starts a new clitic domain, but the connectors do not all behave alike. Али can be followed directly by a clitic cluster, whereas the short proclitic coordinators а and и do not themselves provide an accented host for enclitics. After а/и, an expressed first constituent normally comes before the cluster.
Послала сам им документ, а они су ми одмах потврдили пријем.
I sent them the document, and they immediately confirmed receipt to me. (female speaker)
Хтели смо да останемо, али нам се није допала музика.
We wanted to stay, but we did not like the music.
With an expressed subject, the cluster follows the subject phrase: а они су ми. After али, it can follow the connector directly: али нам се. Each coordinated clause has its own second-position calculation; copying English pronoun placement produces unnatural order.
A short dialogue
— Јеси ли завршио презентацију? — Текст је готов, а графикони још нису. Хтео сам да их уредим јутрос, али ми се покварио рачунар. Ана ће донети свој лаптоп и заједно ћемо све завршити до ручка.
— Have you finished the presentation? — The text is ready, but the charts aren't yet. I wanted to edit them this morning, but my computer broke. Ana will bring her laptop, and together we'll finish everything by lunch. (male respondent)
А compares two parallel parts of the presentation. Али marks the broken computer as the obstacle to the plan. И links Ana’s contribution to the compatible joint result.
Quick decision path
- Is the second unit simply compatible additional information? Use и.
- Are two parallel topics, people, times, or properties being differentiated? Use а.
- Does the second unit defeat an expectation or block a plan? Use али.
- Is the pattern actually “not X, but Y”? Leave this three-way system and use corrective него or већ.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Reframe one scene
Describe two colleagues preparing an event three times: first as cooperative addition with и, then as divided responsibilities with а, and finally with an unexpected problem introduced by али. Explain how the factual scene or the listener’s interpretation changes.
Task 2: Edit the connectors
In a six-sentence dialogue, replace English-inspired и wherever the second speaker changes topic, and replace а wherever the second clause actually defeats an expectation. Add the required commas and position any clitics naturally.
Common Mistakes
❌ Ја ћу позвати клијента и ти пошаљи нову понуду.
Awkward for divided responsibilities — и groups the actions instead of contrasting the assignments.
✅ Ја ћу позвати клијента, а ти пошаљи нову понуду.
I'll call the client, and you send the new offer.
❌ Напољу је падала киша, а смо ипак отишли пешке.
Incorrect clitic placement — short а cannot by itself host the enclitic смо; use али смо or place an accented constituent after а.
✅ Напољу је падала киша, али смо ипак отишли пешке.
It was raining outside, but we still went on foot.
❌ Купила је хлеб, и сир.
Incorrect punctuation — a simple additive pair with и takes no comma.
✅ Купила је хлеб и сир.
She bought bread and cheese.
❌ Ја радим од куће а брат иде у канцеларију.
Incorrect punctuation — contrastive а is preceded by a comma.
✅ Ја радим од куће, а брат иде у канцеларију.
I work from home, while my brother goes to the office.
❌ Позвао сам је, али се ми није јавила.
Incorrect clitic order — dative ми precedes reflexive се inside the cluster.
✅ Позвао сам је, али ми се није јавила.
I called her, but she did not get back to me. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- И adds compatible information, а differentiates parallel topics, and али blocks an expectation.
- Different subjects can take и when their actions form one scene; topic contrast, not subject count, motivates а.
- English but corresponds to а for neutral comparison and али for genuine adversative force.
- Write no comma before ordinary и, but write one before а and али.
- The conjunction shapes discourse, while tense and aspect independently shape the events.
- Start each coordinated clause’s clitic calculation anew: али нам се, а он је, и ми смо.
