ti vs Vi: Formal and Informal You

English you does not show whether a speaker is addressing one close person, several people, or one person respectfully. Serbian does: ти addresses one familiar person, while ви addresses a group or one person politely. In direct respectful correspondence to one individual, that polite pronoun and its forms are often capitalized: Ви, Вас, Вам, Ваш.

Choosing between them is both grammatical and social. Every verb, imperative, object pronoun, and possessive must match, but a correct Ви form can still sound abrupt if the request is too direct. Serbian politeness combines address, mood, particles, aspect, explanation, and tone.

The basic contrast

RelationshipPronounPresentImperativeRequest phrase
one familiar personтиможеш, желишдођи, сачекајмолим те
several peopleвиможете, желитедођите, сачекајтемолим вас
one polite/distant personви / Виможете, желитедођите, сачекајтемолим вас / Вас

Лука, хоћеш ли да седнеш овде поред мене?

Luka, would you like to sit here beside me? (informal singular)

Госпођо Марковић, желите ли да седнете близу прозора?

Ms Marković, would you like to sit near the window? (formal singular)

The polite singular uses the same second-person plural grammar as true plural address. A title or the wider context tells the listener that only one person is meant.

The whole pronoun system changes

Do not learn only nominative ти/ви. The addressee appears in several cases and in possessives.

FunctionInformal singularPlural/polite
nominativeтиви / Ви
accusative clitic/fullте / тебевас / Вас
dative clitic/fullти / тебивам / вама; Вам / Вама in direct polite writing
genitiveтебевас / Вас
instrumentalтобомвама / Вама
locativeтебивама / Вама
possessiveтвојваш / Ваш

Послаћу ти адресу чим проверим твој број телефона.

I'll send you the address as soon as I check your phone number. (informal singular)

Послаћу Вам потврду чим проверим Ваш број пријаве.

I will send you confirmation as soon as I check your application number. (formal written address to one person)

Capitalization does not change pronunciation. In ordinary prose describing a conversation, lowercase ви can still be polite singular. Capital Ви/Ваш is a courtesy convention in direct letters and messages to one respected recipient; lowercase is normal for a group and for general public-facing instructions.

💡
Choose the relationship before constructing the sentence. Then align the entire chain: ти — можеш — пошаљи — молим те — твој or ви — можете — пошаљите — молим вас — ваш.

Agreement in the past and with predicate adjectives

Standard polite singular Ви controls plural agreement. In the perfect and in a predicate adjective without an overt singular noun, the standard form is masculine plural regardless of whether the respected individual is a man or a woman: Ви сте рекли, Ви сте дошли, Ви сте били љубазни.

Госпођо Јовановић, да ли сте добили поруку коју смо Вам послали?

Ms Jovanović, did you receive the message we sent you? (formal singular)

Господине Николићу, били сте веома стрпљиви; хвала Вам.

Mr Nikolić, you were very patient; thank you. (formal singular)

This is grammatical agreement with honorific plural Ви, not a statement about the person's gender. True plural groups follow their actual plural composition: a group of women can say ви сте рекле, while a mixed or all-male group has ви сте рекли.

The contrast is easy to miss because present forms do not show gender:

Ана, јеси ли стигла? — Госпођо Петровић, јесте ли стигли?

Ana, have you arrived? — Ms Petrović, have you arrived? (informal feminine singular versus standard formal singular)

Forms such as Ви сте рекла mix plural сте with singular feminine рекла and are outside the contemporary standard norm, even though similar “half-agreement” can be heard regionally in parts of the wider BCMS area. Do not adopt it as unmarked standard Serbian.

When Ви is the safer opening

Polite Ви is the usual safe choice with an unfamiliar adult, a customer or service professional, a teacher, a doctor, an older person not personally close to you, or a contact in a formal institutional role. Titles and vocatives reinforce the frame: господине Петровићу, госпођо Илић, професорка Јовановић.

Извините, можете ли да ми кажете где је шалтер за пријаве?

Excuse me, could you tell me where the application counter is? (polite singular or plural)

Age alone does not determine address, and workplaces differ. Some teams use ти from the first day; others maintain ви with clients, senior colleagues, or new contacts. Online communities and younger peer groups often move to ти faster, but a public message to an unknown individual is not automatically intimate.

Using ти too early can imply closeness, equality, informality, or deliberate dominance. Using Ви where close friends expect ти can create distance, irony, or playful mock formality. Neither pronoun has one invariant emotional meaning.

Moving from Ви to ти

The transition should be mutual. Natural proposals include Можемо ли на ти?, Хоћемо ли да пређемо на ти?, and Ако Вам одговара, можемо на ти. Traditionally, the older or socially senior person often offers the change, but contemporary relationships vary; the essential point is consent and reciprocity.

Пошто ћемо блиско сарађивати, можемо ли да пређемо на ти?

Since we'll be working closely together, can we switch to first-name/informal terms?

Наравно, ја сам Мина. Можемо на ти.

Of course, I'm Mina. We can use informal address.

Once the speakers agree, change the entire paradigm, not just the pronoun. Можете ли да ми пошаљеш is not a gradual social transition; it is grammatical mismatch.

Returning unilaterally from ти to ви can signal conflict or deliberate distance. It may also be playful, depending on intonation and relationship. Context matters more than a dictionary label.

Address choice is not the whole of politeness

Compare direct and mitigated requests to the same polite addressee:

Пошаљите ми уговор данас.

Send me the contract today. (formal grammar, but direct instruction)

Да ли бисте могли да ми пошаљете уговор до краја дана?

Would you be able to send me the contract by the end of the day? (polite, mitigated request)

Both use ви, yet the conditional бисте могли, question format, and explicit deadline give the listener more social room. Conversely, a direct imperative can be warmly polite in hospitality or routine service:

Изволите, сместите се у фотељу док донесем кафу.

Please make yourself comfortable in the armchair while I bring the coffee. (formal hospitality)

Молим вас cannot repair person mismatch, hostile intonation, or an unreasonable demand. The full system is developed in Politeness Strategies and Requests.

Parallel dialogues

Informal singular

— Ћао, Иване, имаш ли минут? — Имам, реци. — Можеш ли да ми помогнеш око ове табеле? — Наравно, пошаљи ми је.

— Hi, Ivan, do you have a minute? — I do; go ahead. — Can you help me with this table? — Of course, send it to me. (informal singular)

The dialogue uses имаш, реци, можеш, пошаљи and clitics ми/те appropriate to one familiar person.

Formal singular

— Добар дан, господине Илићу. Имате ли тренутак? — Изволите. — Да ли бисте могли да ми помогнете око ове табеле? — Наравно, пошаљите ми је.

— Good afternoon, Mr Ilić. Do you have a moment? — Go ahead. — Would you be able to help me with this table? — Of course, send it to me. (formal singular)

The communicative goal is identical, but title, plural verb forms, conditional бисте, and -те imperatives maintain respectful distance.

Social asymmetry and face

An exchange may be asymmetric: an adult may address a child as ти while the child uses Ви; institutional hierarchy has historically produced similar patterns. Such asymmetry is not automatically an insult, but among adults it can make status and power unusually visible. Mirroring an adult's ти without invitation is not always safe.

If unsure in a real first encounter, start with Ви and let the relationship negotiate greater familiarity. That is a concrete default, not a claim that ти is inherently disrespectful.

Practice

Task 1: Transform the whole paradigm

Change Можеш ли да ми пошаљеш своју адресу кад стигнеш? from informal singular to polite singular. Adjust the modal and subordinate verb, but explain why reflexive possessive своју stays unchanged; apply courtesy capitalization only if you add an explicit Ви form.

Task 2: Negotiate the transition

Write a two-turn exchange in which colleagues begin with Ви, propose да пређемо на ти, and then repeat one request using consistent ти forms.

Common Mistakes

Mixing second-person singular and plural

❌ Госпођо, можете ли да сачекаш овде?

Incorrect person agreement—можете addresses Ви, while сачекаш addresses ти.

✅ Госпођо, можете ли да сачекате овде?

Ma'am, could you wait here?

Using singular gender agreement with polite Ви

❌ Госпођо Павловић, Ви сте рекла да долазите сутра.

Incorrect standard honorific agreement—polite Ви requires plural рекли, not feminine singular рекла.

✅ Госпођо Павловић, Ви сте рекли да долазите сутра.

Ms Pavlović, you said that you were coming tomorrow. (formal singular)

Capitalizing a true plural as though it were one formal addressee

❌ Драги студенти, молим Вас да предате радове до петка.

Incorrect courtesy capitalization for this group address—plural вас is normally lowercase.

✅ Драги студенти, молим вас да предате радове до петка.

Dear students, please submit your papers by Friday.

Adding молим without aligning the grammar

❌ Молим Вас, пошаљи ми потврду.

Incorrect address match—formal Вас requires plural/polite пошаљите.

✅ Молим Вас, пошаљите ми потврду када буде спремна.

Please send me the confirmation when it is ready. (formal singular)

Switching to ти without mutual agreement

❌ Од сада смо на ти, иако смо се тек упознали.

Pragmatically inappropriate unilateral switch—the speaker imposes familiarity immediately after meeting.

✅ Ако Вам одговара, можемо ли да пређемо на ти?

If that suits you, can we switch to informal terms?

Key Takeaways

  • Ти takes singular verb and imperative forms; plural or polite ви/Ви takes second-person plural forms.
  • In direct correspondence to one respected person, Ви, Вас, Вам, Ваш may be capitalized; true plural forms are normally lowercase.
  • Standard polite singular uses plural masculine agreement: Ви сте рекли/дошли, including when addressing one woman.
  • Start with Ви in unfamiliar adult or institutional relationships, then move to ти by mutual agreement.
  • Address choice, conditional mood, aspect, particles, reasons, and intonation work together to create appropriate politeness.
