Learning Aspect from Dictionaries

A Serbian dictionary entry is more useful when you read it as a map of a verb family, not as a translation of one infinitive. For every new verb, identify its aspect, present stem, common partner, government, and the particular sense in which the pairing holds. This prevents the common mistake of learning писати = write while leaving написати, преписати, and потписати in an undifferentiated pile.

Read the aspect label first

Serbian dictionaries use labels such as несвр. “imperfective,” свр. “perfective,” and свр. и несвр. or двов. “biaspectual.” Abbreviations vary by dictionary, so read its list of conventions before the entries.

LabelRecordQuestion to ask
несвр.imperfectiveWhat is the usual bounded partner?
свр.perfectiveWhat form presents process or repetition?
свр. и несвр. / двов.biaspectualWhich contexts disambiguate the reading?

Some polysemous verbs receive different aspect labels under different senses. Do not copy the label at the head of an entry without checking whether your intended meaning has a separate note.

Тренутно анализирамо понуде.

We are currently analyzing the proposals. (biaspectual анализирати realized imperfectively)

Анализирали смо све понуде до петка.

We analyzed all the proposals by Friday. (the same verb realized perfectively)

Record principal parts, not only the infinitive

An infinitive may hide the present stem. A practical card records at least first-person singular present and the masculine/feminine l-participle when they are not transparent.

InfinitivePresentPast l-participleAspect
писатипишемписао / писалаimperfective
написатинапишемнаписао / написалаperfective
узетиузмемузео / узелаperfective
узиматиузимамузимао / узималаimperfective

Узимам лек после доручка, а јутрос сам га узео мало касније.

I take the medicine after breakfast, but this morning I took it a little later. (male speaker)

This one sentence fixes present formation, past agreement, habitual imperfective, and one bounded perfective event.

Check whether the proposed partner preserves meaning

Dictionaries may cross-reference a partner, but an aspectual family is not always a perfect synonym pair. Compare the object and intended result in a real example.

Писала је извештај цело поподне.

She worked on writing the report all afternoon.

Написала је извештај пре краја радног времена.

She finished writing the report before the end of the workday.

These share the same report-writing situation; написати adds the completed product. By contrast, преписати извештај means copy the report, and потписати извештај means sign it. Both are related to писати, but neither is its neutral completion partner.

💡
A trustworthy pair passes a “same situation” test: can both verbs describe the same participants and basic action, with the central contrast being process versus boundary? If the prefix changes the action, record a family branch, not a simple pair.

Record government with the verb

Aspect partners usually keep core government, but learners still need the case or preposition. A bare English translation cannot tell you that помагати/помоћи takes dative or сећати се/сетити се takes genitive.

NetworkGovernmentNotebook frame
помагати — помоћиdativeпомагати коме / помоћи коме
сећати се — сетити сеgenitiveсећати се кога/чега
чекати — сачекатиaccusativeчекати кога/шта
разговарати — поразговаратис(а) + instrumentalразговарати с ким

Помагала сам комшиници целог јутра, а онда сам јој помогла да унесе последњу кутију.

I was helping my neighbor all morning, and then I helped her carry in the last box. (female speaker)

Нисам могао да се сетим његовог презимена, иако сам се добро сећао лица.

I couldn't recall his surname, although I remembered the face well. (male speaker)

Dative јој and genitives презимена, лица belong on the same card as the verb family.

Treat accent information as pronunciation metadata

Serbian accent dictionaries may mark pitch, length, and sometimes post-accentual vowel length. Those marks are specialist notation, not ordinary Serbian spelling. Copy the pronunciation field into a separate notebook line and use reliable audio; keep normal example sentences unmarked.

Accent can distinguish forms or shift across a family, but written писати, написати, преписивати normally appear without accent signs. Consult the accent-dictionary guide before interpreting a source's symbols, because notation and the amount of information shown can differ.

A seven-line notebook method

For each useful sense, record:

  1. infinitive and aspect label;
  2. first-person singular present and third-person plural if irregular;
  3. l-participle forms that expose agreement or stem change;
  4. closest aspectual partner for this sense;
  5. case or preposition required by complements;
  6. one process/habit example and one bounded-result example;
  7. register, regional note, and pronunciation source where relevant.

For читати — прочитати, a compact entry might contain читам — читају, прочитам — прочитају, object in accusative, and these two frames:

Свако вече читам роман пре спавања.

Every evening I read a novel before going to sleep.

Прочитаћу роман до следећег састанка клуба.

I'll finish the novel by the next book-club meeting.

The English gloss is almost identical, but the time phrase and Serbian partner show what is actually being learned.

Use two dictionaries when the network looks too neat

Lexicographers differ in whether they pair verbs at the headword, under a specific sense, or through cross-references. If one source implies that every prefixed derivative is an equivalent partner, check a second reputable Serbian dictionary and compare examples. Corpus evidence can show frequency, but frequency alone does not establish standardness or identical meaning.

For a borrowed verb, confirm whether the entry is biaspectual and whether a prefixed form has specialized:

Стручни тим је анализирао узорке, а независна лабораторија их је затим поново анализирала.

The expert team analyzed the samples, and an independent laboratory then analyzed them again.

An automatic learner might invent a prefix for “again.” Natural Serbian instead uses поново анализирати here; проанализирати emphasizes working through the analysis, not repetition by itself.

A dialogue driven by the result

Јеси ли прочитала уговор? — Јесам, али сам два члана морала да читам по три пута.

Did you read the contract through? — Yes, but I had to read two clauses three times each. (female addressee/speaker)

The question needs perfective прочитала because it asks about completion. The reply switches to imperfective читам after the modal because repeated reading activity is central. A notebook containing only “read = читати” would not prepare the learner for this exchange.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build a complete entry

Create a seven-line notebook entry for чекати — сачекати. Include present forms, l-participles, accusative government, one duration example, and one bounded-result example.

Task 2: Audit a false pair

Take писати, написати, преписати, and потписати. Draw a network that marks the neutral pair and two lexical branches. Add one object that makes each branch's meaning unmistakable.

Common Mistakes

❌ У речнику пише написати ‘write’, па је то прошло време глагола писати.

Incorrect — написати is a perfective infinitive, not a past-tense form.

✅ Јуче сам писао, а сутра ћу написати коначну верзију.

I was writing yesterday, and tomorrow I'll complete the final version. (male speaker)

❌ Довољно је да запишем само инфинитив узети.

Incorrect study strategy — узети hides the present узмем and past forms узео/узела.

✅ Записаћу: узети, узмем, узео/узела; свршени вид.

I'll record: uzeti, uzmem, uzeo/uzela; perfective aspect.

❌ Помоћи ћу њу око пријаве.

Incorrect — English does not reveal Serbian government; помоћи takes dative њој, not accusative њу.

✅ Помоћи ћу јој око пријаве.

I'll help her with the application.

❌ Акценатски знаци из речника морају се писати у свакој српској реченици.

Incorrect — dictionary accent marks encode pronunciation and are absent from ordinary spelling.

✅ У обичној поруци пишемо: Прочитаћу уговор вечерас.

In an ordinary message we write: I'll read the contract through tonight.

Key Takeaways

  • Read the dictionary's aspect labels and check whether they apply to the whole lexeme or one sense.
  • Record present stems, l-participles, government, and examples alongside the infinitive.
  • Organize verbs as networks, separating close aspectual partners from lexical prefix branches.
  • Keep specialist accent notation in pronunciation notes, not in ordinary Serbian spelling.
