One major source of Serbian perfective verbs is prefixation: a prefix attaches to an imperfective base and gives the event a boundary. In a close pair such as писати — написати, the new boundary is ordinary completion. Yet prefixes also carry lexical meanings—direction, onset, accumulation, limited duration—so adding one never functions like attaching a universal “perfective tense” marker.
Close completion pairs
Several high-frequency prefixed perfectives are learned as the completion partners of simple imperfectives.
| Imperfective base | Perfective | Typical bounded meaning |
|---|---|---|
| писати | написати | produce a complete written item |
| читати | прочитати | read through to the end |
| кувати | скувати | cook until ready |
| радити | урадити | do/complete a task |
| градити | изградити | build to completion |
| јести | појести | eat the relevant portion up |
Писала сам одговор цело јутро, али сам га написала тек после ручка.
I worked on writing the reply all morning, but I finished it only after lunch. (female speaker)
Супа се још кува; биће готова када се поврће скува.
The soup is still cooking; it will be ready when the vegetables are cooked through.
The perfective member is a separate lexeme with its own infinitive and present stem: написати — напишем, прочитати — прочитам, скувати — скувам. Do not form it during conversation by freely choosing a prefix.
Prefixes retain lexical meaning
Starting from писати, Serbian builds a network in which each prefix profiles a different result:
| Verb | Meaning | What the prefix contributes |
|---|---|---|
| написати | write, compose | a complete written product |
| преписати | copy, transcribe | transfer the text |
| дописати | add in writing, finish an added part | addition up to an endpoint |
| потписати | sign | place a signature beneath/on the document |
| исписати | write out, fill with writing | exhaustive/outward result |
Преписао је број рачуна у бележницу да га не би заборавио.
He copied the account number into his notebook so he wouldn't forget it.
Дописала је адресу на полеђини коверте.
She added the address on the back of the envelope.
Потписали смо уговор тек након што је адвокат проверио све услове.
We signed the contract only after the lawyer checked all the terms.
Only написати is the ordinary completion partner for generic писати. The other derivatives are perfective, but their lexical changes prevent free substitution.
Common prefix contributions
Prefix meanings are tendencies, not equations. The same prefix interacts with the verb root and may be lexicalized.
| Prefix | Frequent contribution | Example |
|---|---|---|
| на- | result, sufficient accumulation | написати, набрати |
| про- | through, across, completion through a path | прочитати, проћи |
| по- | completion or limited spell | појести, поразговарати |
| за- | onset or movement behind/closed | заплакати, затворити |
| у- | into, achieved task | ући, урадити |
| из- | out, exhaustive result | изаћи, изградити |
Беба је заплакала чим су се врата затворила.
The baby began to cry as soon as the door closed.
Сели смо у двориште и поразговарали о плановима за лето.
We sat in the yard and talked for a while about our summer plans.
Заплакати bounds the beginning, whereas поразговарати bounds an episode. Neither simply means “finish crying/talking.” For more on individual prefixes, see the Serbian verb-prefix overview.
Spelling changes at the prefix boundary
Serbian spelling reflects regular sound alternations. A prefix ending in a voiced consonant may become voiceless before a voiceless root consonant:
| Underlying combination | Written verb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| под- + писати | потписати | sign |
| од- + писати | отписати | write off, reply in writing |
| из- + писати | исписати | write out |
These are ordinary orthographic forms, not optional pronunciations. The surface prefix may therefore look different from its citation form.
Банка је отписала део старог дуга након споразума.
The bank wrote off part of the old debt after the agreement.
Prefixation creates a network, then suffixation may continue it
A prefixed perfective often develops a secondary imperfective that keeps the prefix meaning: преписати — преписивати, потписати — потписивати, изградити — изграђивати. This yields a three-part family:
| Simple imperfective | Prefixed perfective | Secondary imperfective |
|---|---|---|
| писати | преписати | преписивати |
| градити | изградити | изграђивати |
The simple imperfective and secondary imperfective are not synonyms: писати means write, while преписивати means be copying/repeatedly copy. The prefix's lexical contribution survives suffixation.
Tense and mood after prefixation
Prefixation does not create past tense. Perfective напишем is morphologically present but cannot describe current writing; it appears in a future-dependent or repeated frame. Past and future use normal tense morphology.
Када напишем записник, послаћу га свим учесницима.
When I finish writing the minutes, I'll send them to all participants.
Написао бих препоруку да сам боље упознао кандидата.
I would write a recommendation if I had gotten to know the candidate better. (male speaker)
Напишите име и број телефона на врху обрасца.
Write your name and phone number at the top of the form. (polite/plural command)
A contextual contrast
Шта радиш? — Пишем позивнице. Кад их напишем, однећу их у пошту.
What are you doing? — I'm writing the invitations. When I finish them, I'll take them to the post office.
The bare imperfective presents the current process. The prefixed perfective presents the future boundary. This is aspect plus context, not a present-versus-future conjugation pair.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Pair or new lexeme?
Starting with писати, classify написати, преписати, дописати, and потписати. Identify the closest completion partner and state the lexical meaning retained by each other prefix.
Task 2: Build a three-member family
Analyze градити — изградити — изграђивати for aspect and lexical meaning. Write one sentence about an ongoing construction process and one about the completed building result.
Common Mistakes
❌ Могу да додам било који префикс глаголу писати и добијем исто значење у свршеном виду.
Incorrect — different prefixes create different lexical meanings, not interchangeable perfectives.
✅ Написати значи довршити текст, а преписати значи направити његову копију.
Napisati means to complete a text, while prepisati means to make a copy of it.
❌ Сада напишем поруку за колегу.
Incorrect for current activity — prefixed perfective напишем cannot express an actual ongoing present.
✅ Сада пишем поруку за колегу.
I'm writing a message for my colleague now.
❌ Подписао сам уговор без читања.
Incorrect spelling — voicing assimilation gives потписао, not подписао.
✅ Потписао сам уговор тек пошто сам га пажљиво прочитао.
I signed the contract only after reading it carefully. (male speaker)
❌ Преписивати је исто што и писати, само је несвршено.
Incorrect — secondary imperfective преписивати retains the prefix meaning ‘copy.’
✅ Студент је преписивао цитате из старог издања.
The student was copying quotations from the old edition.
Key Takeaways
- Prefixation often derives perfectives by adding a boundary to an imperfective base.
- A close aspectual pair shares a lexical situation; many other prefixed forms belong to the wider family but are not simple partners.
- Prefixes retain meanings such as direction, onset, limited duration, and exhaustive result.
- Secondary imperfectives keep the prefixed lexical meaning while reopening its internal viewpoint.
