Aspectual Pairs versus Related Verbs

An aspectual pair lets a speaker present essentially the same lexical situation from two viewpoints: imperfective opens the event as process, habit, or background, while perfective presents a relevant boundary. A related verb may share the same root yet name a different event. This distinction matters because Serbian prefixes do much more than add a grammatical label meaning completed.

English often translates several members of one Serbian family with write, read, or a phrasal paraphrase. The English gloss is therefore evidence, not a decision procedure. You must check whether the participants, result, direction, and government stay the same.

Four Tests for a Close Aspectual Pair

A useful working diagnosis combines four tests. No single test is infallible, and dictionaries sometimes divide the same family differently.

TestQuestionEvidence for a close pair
lexical eventDo both verbs name the same kind of situation?writing the same report
participantsDo subject, object, and other arguments keep the same roles?the same writer creates the same report
governmentDo case and preposition patterns remain stable?both take the report in the accusative
contextual contrastCan one real event be viewed first internally and then as bounded?working on the report versus completing it

The familiar писати — написати contrast passes these tests in an ordinary text-production context:

Јелена је писала извештај цело преподне, али га није завршила.

Jelena worked on the report all morning, but she did not finish it.

Јелена је написала извештај пре састанка.

Jelena wrote and completed the report before the meeting.

Both clauses concern Jelena creating a report. Imperfective писала је looks inside that activity without asserting its endpoint; perfective написала је includes the completed text. The verbs do not belong to different tenses—both examples are past.

💡
Hold the real-world situation constant before comparing aspect. If changing the verb also changes what happened, you are probably comparing relatives in a lexical family, not two neutral viewpoints on one event.

A Shared Root Does Not Guarantee Synonymy

The root -пис- supports a network of distinct events. The prefix may specify transfer, addition, placement, or record-making.

VerbAspectLexical event
писатиimperfectivewrite; engage in writing
написатиperfectiveproduce a complete written item
преписатиperfectivecopy or transcribe
дописатиperfectiveadd a written part or finish an outstanding part
потписатиperfectivesign
записатиperfectivewrite down or record

Преписала је број предмета са старог обрасца на нови.

She copied the case number from the old form onto the new one.

Дописала је напомену испод табеле.

She added a note below the table.

Потписао је уговор, али га није сам написао.

He signed the contract, but he did not write it himself.

The last example proves the lexical distinction particularly clearly. Signing and composing can be performed by different people; потписати cannot be merely the completed viewpoint of generic писати.

Secondary Imperfectives Reveal the Derived Event

When a prefix creates a new lexical event, Serbian can often derive an imperfective that preserves that meaning: преписати — преписивати, потписати — потписивати, записати — записивати. These are especially strong pair candidates because viewpoint changes while the prefixed meaning remains.

Док је преписивала адресу, проверила је сваки број два пута.

While she was copying the address, she checked every number twice.

Преписала је адресу и вратила оригинал власнику.

She copied the address and returned the original to its owner.

Both verbs mean copy, not generic write. The secondary imperfective opens the copying process; the perfective presents one completed copy. Similarly:

Директорка тренутно потписује решења у својој канцеларији.

The director is currently signing the decisions in her office.

Директорка је потписала последње решење и позвала секретара.

The director signed the final decision and called the secretary.

Secondary imperfectivization is evidence, not an absolute mathematical test. Some derivatives are rare, limited to particular senses, or evaluated differently by dictionaries. The dedicated secondary imperfectives page explains how frequency and context affect the choice.

Why Dictionaries Disagree

Grammarians agree that an ideal pair differs mainly in aspectual viewpoint, but mainly is difficult to measure. Perfective прочитати includes reaching the end of a relevant text, while imperfective читати does not. Is that endpoint only aspectual, or an added lexical result? Different analyses draw the line differently, yet learners still need both verbs.

Читала сам рукопис два сата и стигла до трећег поглавља.

I read the manuscript for two hours and reached chapter three. (female speaker)

Прочитала сам рукопис и послала аутору коментаре.

I read the manuscript through and sent the author my comments. (female speaker)

For practical learning, record three things instead of arguing over a label: what boundary the perfective asserts, what meanings the imperfective covers, and whether another imperfective preserves the prefixed meaning more precisely. Consult more than one reliable dictionary when a derivative is unfamiliar.

💡
A dictionary’s partner label is useful, but its definitions and examples are more important. If the two entries differ in object type, direction, result, or register, store those differences explicitly.

Aspect Is Not Tense or English Grammatical Perfect

Perfective verbs occur in the past, future, conditional, imperative, and future-oriented present. Imperfective verbs also occur in past and future. The terms describe viewpoint, not calendar time and not the English construction have + participle.

Сутра ћу написати одговор после консултација са правницом.

Tomorrow I will write and complete the response after consulting the lawyer.

Сутра ћу писати одговор, али не обећавам да ће бити готов.

Tomorrow I will work on the response, but I do not promise that it will be ready.

Both are future. The first commits to a finished response; the second commits only to the activity.

Context Can Make Only One Member Natural

Consider a colleague waiting for a file:

— Јеси ли послала коначну верзију? — Нисам; још је прегледам.

— Have you sent the final version? — No; I am still reviewing it. (female addressee and speaker)

The question requires perfective послала because the practical issue is whether one transfer occurred. Imperfective слала would ask about engagement in sending or repeated past sending, not whether this file reached that boundary.

Now change the situation:

— Ко је слао недељне извештаје док сам био одсутан? — Слала их је Мина.

— Who sent the weekly reports while I was away? — Mina did. (male speaker in the question)

Here imperfective слао/слала is natural because the question asks about a recurring responsibility. One English verb send covers both Serbian choices.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Pair or Relative?

Classify the relations писати — написати, писати — потписати, and потписивати — потписати. State whether the lexical event stays constant and identify the boundary.

Писати — написати: стварање текста, процес према довршеном тексту. Писати — потписати: различите радње. Потписивати — потписати: иста радња потписивања, отворена или заокружена.

Answer: write–complete a text is a close contextual pair; write–sign names different events; be signing–sign is an aspectual contrast within the signing event.

Task 2: Repair the Dialogue

Choose the verb that answers a result question, then add a sentence acknowledging incomplete activity.

Јеси ли прочитао уговор? — Нисам га прочитао; читао сам га до поноћи, али су ми остале још две стране.

Did you read the contract through? — I did not finish it; I read until midnight, but I still had two pages left. (male addressee and speaker)

Common Mistakes

Treating every prefix as a completion switch

❌ Потписати је само свршени облик глагола писати.

Incorrect—потписати means ‘sign,’ so the prefix creates a different lexical event.

✅ Написала је уговор, а директор га је потписао.

She wrote the contract, and the director signed it.

Calling perfective a past tense

❌ Свршени глагол мора да означава прошлост.

Incorrect—perfective aspect also appears in future, conditional, imperative, and subordinate present forms.

✅ Кад запишем адресу, вратићу ти оловку.

When I write down the address, I will give your pen back.

Ignoring the prefixed meaning in a secondary imperfective

❌ Преписивати и писати су потпуни синоними јер су оба несвршена.

Incorrect—преписивати retains the meaning ‘copy or transcribe.’

✅ Она пише свој предлог док ја преписујем податке из регистра.

She is writing her proposal while I copy the data from the register.

Assuming one English gloss proves pairhood

❌ Ићи и стићи су видски пар јер се оба могу превести енглеским глаголом кретања.

Incorrect—ићи profiles movement, while стићи names arrival at a destination.

✅ Ишао је пешке, али је стигао пре аутобуса.

He went on foot, but he arrived before the bus.

Key Takeaways

  • A close pair keeps the lexical event, participants, and government stable while changing viewpoint.
  • A shared root or English gloss does not make two verbs synonyms.
  • Prefixes often create new results, paths, or participant structures.
  • Secondary imperfectives preserve the prefixed event and can clarify pairhood.
  • Dictionary disagreement is real; learn definitions, government, frequency, and context, not only partner labels.
