Basic Verbs of Motion (ići, doći, hodati)

Serbian ићи is the ordinary verb for go, whether the trip is happening now, happens regularly, or is arranged for the future. Доћи focuses on reaching a destination, while ходати describes walking as a manner of movement.

This division is simpler than the system an English speaker may encounter in Russian: standard Serbian does not require one basic imperfective for motion in one direction and another for habitual or multidirectional motion. The same ићи works in Сада идем and Сваког дана идем.

Learn ићи — идем — иду and доћи — дођем — дођу as complete sets. Their infinitives do not transparently reveal the present stems.

Сада идем до продавнице; треба ли ти нешто?

I’m going to the store now; do you need anything?

Сваког радног дана идемо у канцеларију.

We go to the office every weekday.

English distinguishes am going from go. Serbian imperfective идем/идемо covers both readings; time expressions select the interpretation.

ићи versus ходати

Ићи names a trip or movement toward a goal without specifying how. Ходати foregrounds walking itself: physical ability, exercise, manner, or movement around an area.

На посао идем пешке јер живим близу.

I walk to work because I live nearby.

Лекар ми је рекао да ходам најмање пола сата дневно.

The doctor told me to walk for at least half an hour a day.

Деца ходају по плиткој води и траже шкољке.

The children are walking through the shallow water and looking for shells.

For an ordinary destination, Serbian often uses ићи пешке, literally go on foot, rather than making ходати carry both the manner and destination. Ходати is not the compulsory habitual partner of ићи.

💡
Choose ићи for the trip and add пешке if needed. Choose ходати when walking itself is the activity being described.
💡
Ask whether you are describing the journey (ићи), an approach in progress (долазити), or the arrival boundary (доћи). English go/come alone does not answer that aspectual question.

долазити versus доћи

Долазити is imperfective. It can describe someone currently approaching or a repeated pattern. Доћи is perfective and presents arrival as one bounded event.

Аутобус управо долази на станицу.

The bus is just arriving at the stop.

Мајстор долази сваког уторка да провери опрему.

The technician comes every Tuesday to check the equipment.

Кад мајстор дође, покажи му неисправан кабл.

When the technician arrives, show him the faulty cable.

Perfective дође is morphologically present, but after кад it marks a future arrival boundary. To describe someone on the way now, use imperfective долази, not дође.

Доћи often translates English come, but its core contribution is successful arrival at the reference destination. Compare:

Идем код Иване да јој однесем књигу.

I’m going to Ivana’s place to take her a book.

Доћи ћу код Иване око седам.

I’ll come to Ivana’s place around seven.

The first sentence views the trip as underway; the second promises arrival at Ivana’s place.

Choosing a Destination Phrase

Movement toward a place uses accusative after у or на. Movement toward a person or professional uses код + genitive.

PatternTypical useExamples
у + accusativeinside a place; city or country as destinationу школу, у Београд, у Србију
на + accusativeactivity, event, institution, open destinationна посао, на концерт, на пијацу
код + genitiveperson, home, professionalкод Ане, код баке, код лекара

После предавања идемо на концерт у Дом омладине.

After the lecture we are going to a concert at the Youth Center.

Сутра ујутру идем код зубара, па долазим на посао касније.

Tomorrow morning I’m going to the dentist, so I’m coming to work later.

The preposition is partly lexical and conventional: на посао but у канцеларију. Learn common destinations as phrases rather than translating English to with one Serbian word.

The wider destination–location contrast is mapped on Motion Prepositions.

Means of Transport and Route

The vehicle commonly appears in the instrumental without a preposition: аутобусом, возом, бициклом, колима. Пешке is an adverb.

До факултета идем трамвајем, а враћам се пешке.

I take the tram to the university, and I walk back.

Идемо колима преко Зрењанина јер је ауто-пут затворен.

We are going by car via Zrenjanin because the highway is closed.

English says take the tram and go by car. Serbian ordinarily uses ићи + instrumental, not узети take plus a vehicle.

Questions, Negation, and Clitics

Идеш вечерас на тренинг.

You are going to practice tonight.

Не идеш вечерас на тренинг.

You are not going to practice tonight.

Да ли идеш вечерас на тренинг?

Are you going to practice tonight?

Идеш ли са мном до станице?

Are you coming with me to the stop?

Regular не is separate. In са мном, the preposition requires the full instrumental pronoun мном; an object clitic cannot follow са.

Past Agreement and Modal Complements

The l-participles are ишао/ишла, дошао/дошла, and ходао/ходала. They agree with the subject; present forms do not mark gender.

Јуче сам ишла пешке до библиотеке.

Yesterday I walked to the library. (female speaker)

Стигао сам раније јер сам дошао таксијем.

I arrived earlier because I came by taxi. (male speaker)

After a modal, both да + present and the infinitive are standard:

Морам да идем кући пре шест.

I have to go home before six.

Морам ићи кући пре шест.

I have to go home before six.

The bare destination adverb кући means homeward/to home; код куће means at home.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose ићи or ходати

Describe a regular trip to school, then walking as exercise.

Сваког дана идем у школу. — После вечере ходам пола сата.

I go to school every day. — After dinner I walk for half an hour. Answer: ићи for the trip, ходати for walking as an activity.

Task 2: Choose долазити or доћи

Describe an arrival happening now, then a future completed arrival after кад.

Воз сада долази. — Кад воз дође, ући ћемо у други вагон.

The train is arriving now. — When the train arrives, we will get into the other car. Answer: imperfective долази now, perfective дође at the future boundary.

Common Mistakes

Building the present from the infinitive

❌ Ићем у банку после ручка.

Incorrect—the first-person present of ићи is идем.

✅ Идем у банку после ручка.

I am going to the bank after lunch.

Using доћи for motion unfolding now

❌ Сада дођем до ваше зграде.

Incorrect for an action in progress—perfective дођем presents the arrival boundary.

✅ Управо долазим до ваше зграде.

I am approaching your building now.

Using locative for a destination

❌ После доручка идем у продавници.

Incorrect—movement into/toward the store requires у + accusative.

✅ После доручка идем у продавницу.

After breakfast I am going to the store.

Copying English take a bus

❌ До центра узимамо аутобус.

Unnatural calque—use ићи with the vehicle in the instrumental.

✅ До центра идемо аутобусом.

We take the bus downtown.

Ignoring past gender agreement

❌ Јуче сам ишао код лекара.

Incorrect for a female speaker—the l-participle must be ишла.

✅ Јуче сам ишла код лекара.

Yesterday I went to the doctor. (female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Ићи covers current, habitual, and arranged motion; Serbian does not require a Russian-style directional pair.
  • Ходати foregrounds walking as a manner or activity; ићи пешке is the usual way to describe a trip on foot.
  • Imperfective долазити describes approach or repetition; perfective доћи presents one arrival.
  • Use у/на + accusative for destinations and код + genitive for people and professionals.
  • Vehicles commonly take the instrumental: аутобусом, возом, колима.
