The Serbian prefix за- often places a boundary at the beginning of an activity, as in заплакати burst into tears. In other verbs it evokes obstruction, enclosure, or coverage: затворити close, заклонити block from view, затрпати cover or fill with loose material. Still other за- verbs are strongly lexicalized, such as записати write down.
These meanings form a network, not a translation list. The prefix interacts with the root, may alter valency, and often creates a new lexical event. You must distinguish aspectual viewpoint from the added ideas of onset, closure, coverage, or recording.
The Main Meaning Families
| Meaning family | Frequent verbs | Boundary or result |
|---|---|---|
| inchoative: entry into activity or state | заплакати, запевати, засмејати се, замирисати | the activity or perception begins |
| closure or obstruction | затворити, заклонити, заградити | access, sight, or passage becomes blocked |
| covering or filling | завити, затрпати, засути | a target becomes wrapped, covered, or filled |
| lexicalized result | записати, заказати, завршити | record, schedule/fail, finish |
The table predicts broad associations, not exact meanings. Заказати састанак means schedule a meeting, while мотор је заказао means the engine failed. Such polysemy belongs to the whole lexeme.
Inchoative за-: Entering an Activity
With sounds, bodily reactions, perception, and motion, за- often marks onset. The perfective event is complete when the transition into the activity occurs; the activity itself may continue.
Дете је плакало док га мајка није узела у наручје.
The child was crying until its mother picked it up.
Дете је заплакало чим су се врата затворила.
The child burst into tears as soon as the door closed.
Imperfective плакало је views crying from inside. Perfective заплакало је presents the transition from not crying to crying. It does not say when the crying ended.
Кад су музичари засвирали познату песму, цела сала је запевала.
When the musicians began playing a familiar song, the whole hall started singing.
Чим је чуо добру вест, засмејао се од олакшања.
As soon as he heard the good news, he began to laugh with relief.
После прве пролећне кише земља је замирисала.
After the first spring rain, the earth began to give off a fresh scent.
English often uses start, begin, burst into, or simply a past-tense verb. Serbian encodes the onset in the lexeme itself.
Closure and Obstruction
Another major family presents a path, opening, view, or access point as blocked.
Затварала је прозоре док су остали уносили столице.
She was closing the windows while the others carried in the chairs.
Затворила је последњи прозор и угасила светло.
She closed the final window and turned off the light.
Here the close aspectual pair is затварати — затворити. Both verbs retain closure; the imperfective opens or repeats that derived event, while the perfective reaches the closed state. The relevant comparison is not with a free-standing modern verb творити meaning close.
Густ облак је на тренутак заклонио сунце.
A thick cloud blocked the sun for a moment.
Комшије су оградом заградиле једини прилаз дворишту.
The neighbors blocked the only access to the yard with a fence.
These verbs also illustrate valency. Заклонити нешто and заградити нешто take the blocked entity or path as an accusative object. Learn the object structure together with the lexical result.
Covering, Wrapping, and Filling
Coverage verbs construe material as coming over, around, or into a target until a result holds.
Завила је поклон у плави папир и ставила га на полицу.
She wrapped the present in blue paper and put it on the shelf.
Радници су затрпали рупу земљом пре него што су отворили улицу.
The workers filled the hole with earth before reopening the street.
Талас је засуо шеталиште песком и ситним камењем.
The wave covered the promenade with sand and small stones.
Instrumental phrases such as земљом, песком, камењем identify the material used for filling or coverage. The prefix alone does not determine this government; it comes from the whole verb’s participant structure.
Coverage can be partial or complete according to the lexeme and context. Do not infer that every за- verb guarantees total coverage. Засути foregrounds material distributed over a target, while затрпати more strongly evokes filling or burying.
Lexicalized за- Verbs
Some high-frequency derivatives must simply be learned with their conventional meanings.
Записала је шифру у свеску да је не би заборавила.
She wrote the code down in a notebook so that she would not forget it.
Заказали смо контролни преглед за следећи уторак.
We scheduled the follow-up appointment for next Tuesday.
Аутобус је заказао на пола пута, па смо чекали замену.
The bus broke down halfway there, so we waited for a replacement.
The two senses of заказати share a written form but differ radically in event structure and arguments. Scheduling normally takes the arranged event as an accusative object; failure often has the failing device or person as subject. Context normally resolves the sense.
Secondary Imperfectives Keep the за- Meaning
When an imperfective is derived from a за- perfective, it reopens the derived event rather than returning to the bare root.
Секретарица сваког понедељка заказује прегледе за наредну недељу.
Every Monday the receptionist schedules appointments for the following week.
На предавању смо записивали само кључне појмове.
During the lecture we wrote down only the key concepts.
Домар је затварао споредни улаз када смо стигли.
The caretaker was closing the side entrance when we arrived.
Заказивати remains schedule, записивати remains write down, and затварати remains close. They are not generic imperfectives meaning arrange, write, and act on a door. Their perfective partners are заказати, записати, затворити in the matching senses.
See secondary imperfectives for the usage logic; suffix formation itself belongs on the dedicated suffixation page.
Aspect Is Independent of Time
An inchoative or resultative за- verb is not inherently past. Compare future activity with future onset:
На слављу ће певати до поноћи.
At the celebration they will sing until midnight.
Кад оркестар засвира, гости ће запевати.
When the orchestra starts playing, the guests will begin to sing.
Both sentences refer to the future. Imperfective певати presents an interval; perfective засвира/запевати selects two onsets.
A Dialogue Where Recording Matters
— Јеси ли записао број рачуна? — Нисам; само сам писао име фирме.
— Did you write down the account number? — No; I was only writing the company name. (male addressee and speaker)
The question asks whether one piece of information was recorded, so perfective записао is natural. Imperfective писао in the answer reports writing activity but names a different object and does not satisfy that result.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Locate the Boundary
Classify заплакати, затворити, затрпати, and записати as onset, closure, filling/coverage, or lexical recording.
Заплакати — почетак плакања; затворити — постизање затвореног стања; затрпати — испунити или прекрити растреситим материјалом; записати — забележити информацију.
Answer: onset of crying; attainment of a closed state; filling or covering with loose material; recording information.
Task 2: Continue after an Onset
Use perfective for the beginning and imperfective for the continuation of one sound event.
Телефон је зазвонио усред састанка и звонио је све док га Ана није искључила.
The phone started ringing in the middle of the meeting and kept ringing until Ana turned it off.
Common Mistakes
Equating perfective with completion
❌ „Заплакала је“ значи да је завршила плакање.
Incorrect—заплакати marks the onset of crying.
✅ Заплакала је, а затим је дуго плакала у тишини.
She burst into tears and then cried quietly for a long time.
Removing the prefixed meaning from the imperfective
❌ Записивати је исто што и писати, само траје дуже.
Incorrect—записивати preserves the meaning ‘record or write down.’
✅ Док је он писао извештај, ја сам записивала питања за састанак.
While he was writing the report, I was writing down questions for the meeting. (female speaker)
Predicting government from the prefix alone
❌ Радници су затрпали земља рупу.
Incorrect—the covering material requires instrumental земљом, and the affected hole is accusative рупу.
✅ Радници су затрпали рупу земљом.
The workers filled the hole with earth.
Treating a lexicalized sense as transparent
❌ „Аутобус је заказао“ значи да је аутобус заказао термин.
Incorrect in this context—with a vehicle as subject, заказати means fail or break down.
✅ Аутобус је заказао, па је превозник послао друго возило.
The bus broke down, so the transport company sent another vehicle.
Key Takeaways
- Inchoative за- marks entry into an activity, not its completion.
- Closure, obstruction, wrapping, and coverage are separate conventional result families.
- Lexicalized verbs such as записати and заказати cannot be decoded from the prefix alone.
- Secondary imperfectives preserve the derived за- meaning.
- Aspect and time remain independent: inchoative and resultative perfectives occur freely in future environments.
