doći / dolaziti (to come / arrive)

Serbian доћи / долазити covers both English come and many uses of arrive. Perfective доћи presents one arrival as achieved; imperfective долазити presents approach, an arrival in progress, or repeated coming. The pair is morphologically irregular, and its auxiliaries, pronouns, and particles make it an especially useful model of Serbian second-position clitics.

Principal forms

There is no single stem from which all forms can be guessed. Learn доћи — дођем — дошао / дошла — дођи as one set. The imperfective forms belong to another stem: долазити — долазим — долазио / долазила. This is a suppletive aspect pair: the verbs function together in the arrival meaning without being a simple prefix-and-suffix derivation.

The table uses normal unaccented Serbian orthography. Pitch accent and vowel length are real features of pronunciation but are not written in ordinary text; the accent-paradigm guide introduces specialist notation. The spelling learner must master here is the stem network itself.

Аутобус долази за пет минута, па немамо времена за кафу.

The bus is coming in five minutes, so we don't have time for coffee.

Гости су дошли раније него што смо очекивали.

The guests arrived earlier than we expected.

Approach, repeated coming, and achieved arrival

Use долазити when the subject is on the way toward the reference point, when an arrival is regularly repeated, or when the process itself matters. Use доћи when the endpoint has been reached or one future arrival is treated as a whole.

Док сам долазила на посао, видела сам да је улица затворена.

While I was coming to work, I saw that the street was closed. (female speaker)

Марко долази код нас сваке друге суботе.

Marko comes to our place every other Saturday.

Доћи ћу по тебе испред биоскопа у пола осам.

I'll come and pick you up in front of the cinema at half past seven.

Perfective present дођем normally appears in a subordinate clause with future reference or in a sequence of completed events, not as a neutral description of current approach.

Кад дођеш до раскрснице, скрени лево код апотеке.

When you reach the intersection, turn left by the pharmacy.

English uses a present after when too, but for a different grammatical reason. Serbian chooses дођеш because reaching the intersection is the bounded trigger for the next instruction.

💡
For “I am coming now,” use сад долазим or, when announcing immediate movement, ево ме, долазим. Perfective дођем is not a Serbian progressive present.

Destination and source

Доћи and долазити are intransitive and not ordinarily reflexive. The person or thing moving is nominative; the endpoint is a prepositional or adverbial phrase, not a direct object. Do not add се merely because English can paraphrase arrival as “get oneself there.”

FrameTypical meaning
доћи у + accusativeinterior, city, institution: у стан, у Београд, у школу
доћи на + accusativeevent, activity, surface-like destination: на концерт, на посао
доћи код + genitivea person or professional: код Ане, код лекара
доћи до + genitivereach an edge, point, person, or result: до моста, до решења
доћи из / са / од + genitivesource: из града, с посла, од сестре

Нова докторка долази у амбуланту понедељком и средом.

The new doctor comes to the clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Управо сам дошао од адвоката и морам да прегледам ове папире.

I've just come back from the lawyer's office, and I need to review these papers. (male speaker)

Directional кући means “home”: доћи кући. Static код куће means “at home.” A route can use кроз + accusative, and transport commonly uses the instrumental.

Дошли смо до села старим путем, а вратили се аутопутем.

We reached the village by the old road and returned by the highway.

The motion-preposition guide treats these source and destination oppositions systematically.

Доћи до: reaching and obtaining

Literal доћи до + genitive means to reach a point. The same frame extends to obtaining access, discovering information, or arriving at an abstract result. These extensions are neutral in professional and everyday Serbian.

Истраживачи су дошли до података који раније нису били доступни.

The researchers obtained data that had not previously been available. (academic)

После дуге расправе коначно смо дошли до заједничког решења.

After a long discussion, we finally arrived at a shared solution.

Do not replace every English get with доћи до. The construction highlights reaching or obtaining something after a path, effort, or sequence; ordinary receiving is often добити.

Second-position clitics

The perfect is formed from an l-participle and the clitic auxiliary сам, си, је, смо, сте, су. These clitics do not simply stay next to the English verb: they seek the clause's second position.

Нови техничар нам је дошао из Краљева прошле недеље.

Our new technician came to us from Kraljevo last week.

The first constituent нови техничар occupies the initial field; the cluster нам је follows it. Dative нам precedes auxiliary је. Moving both clitics to the end would sound unnatural in neutral prose.

Кад ти је стигао пакет који је требало да дође јуче?

When did the package that was supposed to arrive yesterday reach you?

Here ти је follows the initial question phrase кад. Because доћи is intransitive, it does not take an accusative direct-object clitic for the destination. Use код њега, до њега, or a dative only when the meaning licenses it.

Future доћи ћу remains two written words because an infinitive ending in -ћи does not fuse with the auxiliary. By contrast, долазићу is written as one word. See the full clitic-cluster guide.

💡
Clitics organize the clause, not the English translation. Build a natural first constituent, then place the cluster: Нови колега | нам је | дошао, Кад | ти је | стигао пакет?

Доћи versus стићи and ићи

Доћи construes motion toward an endpoint or reference point. Стићи foregrounds successful arrival, often with an implication of making it in time. Ићи profiles going or the journey itself and does not automatically replace either member of this aspect pair.

Ако кренемо сада, стићи ћемо пре него што остали дођу.

If we leave now, we'll arrive before the others come.

English chooses come or go relative to speaker location and discourse viewpoint; Serbian does too, but not always at exactly the same conversational center. The dedicated go/come guide explains that choice.

Idiomatic extensions

Several frequent expressions must be learned as units. Доћи себи means recover one's composure or consciousness; доћи на ред means have one's turn arrive; доћи у обзир means be a viable option, often in negation.

После шока му је требало неколико минута да дође себи.

After the shock, he needed a few minutes to recover.

Тај датум не долази у обзир јер је сала већ заузета.

That date is out of the question because the hall is already booked.

The case forms belong to fixed collocations. Translating the English words one by one will not reliably reproduce them.

Micro-dialogue

„Долазиш ли вечерас на пробу?“ — „Да, али ћу доћи мало касније.“ — „У реду, само нам јави кад стигнеш.“

‘Are you coming to rehearsal tonight?’ — ‘Yes, but I'll arrive a little later.’ — ‘All right, just let us know when you get there.’

Imperfective долазиш asks about the planned coming event; perfective доћи ћу commits to one arrival. Стигнеш then foregrounds actually reaching the place.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the arrival viewpoint

Complete a message about a guest who comes every Tuesday, is approaching now, and will have arrived by eight. Use долазити for the pattern/process and доћи for the achieved endpoint.

Task 2: Place the clitics

Rebuild these meanings in natural order: Our replacement arrived yesterday with dative нам; When did the message reach you? with ти је; and I will come tomorrow. Explain why the future is written доћи ћу.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сада дођем у канцеларију, сачекај ме испред.

Incorrect for an action currently in progress — perfective дођем does not mean ‘I am coming now.’

✅ Сада долазим у канцеларију, сачекај ме испред.

I'm coming to the office now; wait for me outside.

❌ Сутра доћићу код тебе после посла.

Incorrect spelling — the future auxiliary does not fuse with an infinitive ending in -ћи.

✅ Сутра ћу доћи код тебе после посла.

Tomorrow I'll come to your place after work.

❌ Кад дођем код куће, послаћу ти фотографије.

Incorrect destination phrase — код куће is static ‘at home,’ not directional ‘home.’

✅ Кад дођем кући, послаћу ти фотографије.

When I get home, I'll send you the photos.

❌ Дошао сам њега да разговарамо.

Incorrect — the person visited is not an accusative direct object of intransitive доћи.

✅ Дошао сам код њега да разговарамо.

I came to his place so we could talk. (male speaker)

❌ Јуче је нам дошао нови колега из Краљева.

Incorrect clitic order — dative нам precedes auxiliary је in the second-position cluster.

✅ Јуче нам је дошао нови колега из Краљева.

Our new colleague from Kraljevo joined us yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • Долазити profiles approach or repeated coming; доћи profiles one achieved arrival.
  • Memorize доћи — дођем — дошао / дошла — дођи and долазити — долазим as separate form sets.
  • Destinations use у/на + accusative, код + genitive, до + genitive, or кући; sources use из/са/од + genitive.
  • Clitics seek second position: нови техничар нам је дошао, кад ти је стигао.
  • Write доћи ћу separately but долазићу as one word.
