Serbian остајати / остати covers “stay,” “remain,” and “be left,” but the grammar changes with the participants. Imperfective остајати presents staying as repeated, gradual, or ongoing; perfective остати presents a bounded decision, the resulting state, or what remains after a change. English leave creates an additional trap: “remain” is остати, while “leave something somewhere” is normally оставити.
Principal forms
| Form | остајати (imperfective) | остати (perfective) |
|---|---|---|
| present | остајем, остајеш, остаје, остајемо, остајете, остају | останем, останеш, остане, останемо, останете, остану |
| l-participle | остајао, остајала, остајало; остајали, остајале, остајала | остао, остала, остало; остали, остале, остала |
| imperative | остај, остајмо, остајте | остани, останимо, останите |
| future, 1st singular | остајаћу | остаћу |
The perfective forms are not built from one unchanged stem: compare infinitive остати, present останем, masculine l-participle остао, and imperative остани. The future contracts regularly to остаћу, not остати ћу in Serbian orthography.
These are ordinary written forms, without pitch-accent or length marks. The shifts of the spoken accent belong to the accent-paradigm guide; for productive use here, the essential irregularity is the alternation оста- / остан- / остао.
Петком остајем дуже у канцеларији јер тада завршавам недељне извештаје.
On Fridays I stay at the office longer because that's when I finish the weekly reports.
Остали смо још једну ноћ пошто је пут био завејан.
We stayed one more night because the road was snowed in.
Process or pattern versus a bounded stay
Use остајати for repeated choices to remain, for an unfolding tendency, or when the internal course matters. Use остати when someone decides or comes to be in the resulting state, or when the entire stay is viewed as one bounded event.
Све више људи остаје у граду и током августа.
More and more people are staying in the city during August too.
Ако останеш после предавања, показаћу ти резултате.
If you stay after the lecture, I'll show you the results.
Perfective остати can occur with a duration. Остао сам три дана does not mean that the verb has become imperfective; it packages the entire three-day stay as one completed episode. By contrast, остајао сам по три дана describes a repeated pattern.
Док сам радио у Крагујевцу, често сам остајао по два дана код колеге.
When I worked in Kragujevac, I would often stay with a colleague for two days at a time. (male speaker)
Place and duration frames
Because staying is static, locations normally use у/на + locative, код + genitive, код куће, or a place adverb. Duration can be an accusative measure phrase, до + genitive, or an adverbial expression.
| Frame | Example phrase |
|---|---|
| остати у/на + locative | у хотелу, у Београду, на послу |
| остати код + genitive | код пријатеља, код куће |
| остати + duration | два дана, целу ноћ, још сат времена |
| остати до + genitive | до петка, до краја састанка |
Можеш да останеш код нас до понедељка ако су сви хотели пуни.
You can stay with us until Monday if all the hotels are full.
Због невремена су путници остали на аеродрому целу ноћ.
Because of the storm, the passengers remained at the airport all night.
Compare motion вратити се на посао “return to work” with static остати на послу “remain at work.” The preposition is the same, but direction uses accusative and location uses locative. See the location page.
Remaining in a condition
Остати can link the subject to an adjective, noun phrase, or prepositional phrase describing the resulting condition. The predicate adjective agrees with the subject.
Иако су се сви расправљали, директорка је остала мирна.
Although everyone was arguing, the director remained calm.
После отказивања пројекта, троје сарадника је остало без посла.
After the project was canceled, three associates were left without work.
Common frames include остати сам, остати отворен, остати без нечега, остати у контакту, and остати при одлуци. The last is relatively (formal) and means to stand by a decision.
Комисија је остала при првобитној одлуци упркос жалби.
The committee stood by its original decision despite the appeal. (formal)
English often uses become or a passive translation for these results. Serbian keeps the perspective “remain/end up in the state,” and the exact complement determines the case.
Остати да + present
To say that someone stays in order to do or finish something, contemporary Serbian normally uses остати да + present. An infinitive after остати occurs in older literary writing and in western BCMS usage, but it is not the unmarked productive Ekavian baseline taught here.
Остала је да помогне новој колегиници око пријаве.
She stayed to help the new colleague with the application.
Остаћемо да завршимо попис, а ви слободно идите.
We'll stay to finish the inventory; you can go ahead and leave.
The да-clause carries person marking—да помогне, да завршимо—and its understood subject normally matches the subject of остати. Serbian does use both the infinitive and да + present productively in other environments; this verb simply has its own distribution. The da-versus-infinitive guide gives the broader system.
What remains: nominative subject and dative experiencer
When остати means “be left/remain available,” the thing remaining is the grammatical subject and controls agreement. The person affected may appear in the dative.
Остао ми је још један испит до краја студија.
I have one exam left before finishing my degree.
Остале су нам само две карте за вечерњу пројекцију.
We have only two tickets left for the evening screening.
In the first sentence, masculine singular испит licenses остао је. In the second, feminine plural карте licenses остале су. English makes I/we the subject of have left, so English speakers often miss this Serbian agreement pattern.
Impersonal quantity expressions often use neuter singular agreement:
До поласка нам је остало мање од десет минута.
We have less than ten minutes left before departure.
The dative нам is not the subject and does not control the verb.
Остати versus оставити and отићи
Остати is intransitive “remain/stay.” Оставити is transitive “leave something/someone” and takes an accusative object. Отићи means that the subject departs.
Ја ћу остати овде, а ти остави документе на рецепцији и иди кући.
I'll stay here; leave the documents at reception and go home.
That single sentence contains three different English leave/stay perspectives: a person remains, an object is left, and another person departs. Serbian makes each argument structure explicit.
Micro-dialogue
„Остајете ли на вечери?“ — „Радо, али морамо да кренемо пре девет.“ — „Онда останите бар на кафи.“
‘Are you staying for dinner?’ — ‘We'd love to, but we have to leave before nine.’ — ‘Then at least stay for coffee.’
The question uses imperfective present for the plan as an open situation. The perfective imperative останите requests one bounded decision to remain.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Aspect and duration
Describe one completed two-night stay and a former habit of staying two nights each week. Then explain why the same duration can occur with остати and остајати.
Task 2: Identify the subject
Translate: We have one hour left; Two seats remained empty; She stayed to finish the report; Leave the keys here. Mark which noun controls agreement and decide between остати and оставити.
Common Mistakes
❌ Оставићу код куће вечерас јер сам уморан.
Incorrect for ‘I will stay’ — оставити is transitive and means to leave something or someone.
✅ Остаћу код куће вечерас јер сам уморан.
I'll stay home tonight because I'm tired. (male speaker)
❌ Остали смо у хотел још једну ноћ.
Incorrect — staying is static, so у takes locative хотелу, not directional accusative хотел.
✅ Остали смо у хотелу још једну ноћ.
We stayed at the hotel for one more night.
❌ Остао су нам још две карте.
Incorrect agreement — feminine plural карте requires остале су.
✅ Остале су нам још две карте.
We have two tickets left.
❌ Сваког лета смо остали код тетке по две недеље.
Incorrect for a repeated past habit — use imperfective остајали смо.
✅ Сваког лета смо остајали код тетке по две недеље.
Every summer we used to stay with our aunt for two weeks at a time.
❌ Остао сам се у канцеларији до касно.
Incorrect — остати is not ordinarily reflexive.
✅ Остао сам у канцеларији до касно.
I stayed at the office until late. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Остајати presents repeated or unfolding staying; остати presents one bounded stay or resulting state.
- Static places take forms such as у хотелу, на послу, and код пријатеља; duration does not by itself force imperfective aspect.
- A result predicate agrees with the subject: остала мирна, остали отворени.
- In остале су нам две карте, the remaining thing is nominative and controls agreement; нам is dative.
- Keep остати “remain,” оставити “leave something,” and отићи “depart” distinct.
