Irregular Present-Tense Verbs

Serbian has relatively few truly unpredictable present-tense paradigms, but the most irregular verbs are among the most frequent: бити be, хтети want, ићи go, and моћи can. Their endings still mark person and number; the difficulty lies in their stems, in special negative forms, and—in the case of бити and хтети—in the difference between full and clitic forms.

English speakers should learn each verb as a small system, not as six isolated words. The most useful questions are: Which stem appears? Is there a clitic series? Is the negative written separately or as one word? What complement follows the verb?

бити: Core and Perfective Present Series

The ordinary copular present of бити has a full affirmative series, a shorter clitic series, and a fused negative series.

PersonFull affirmativeCliticNegative
јајесамсамнисам
тијесисиниси
он / она / онојестејеније
мијесмосмонисмо
вијестестенисте
они / оне / онајесусунису

The clitic series is neutral in ordinary statements and cannot normally begin its own intonation unit. The full series bears stress and is used for contrast, confirmation, short answers, and ли questions. Јест is also possible as an affirmative response or emphatic third-person singular, especially in careful or (formal) style; learners can use јесте safely in the full paradigm.

Ми смо већ у сали, али директор још није стигао.

We are already in the meeting room, but the director has not arrived yet.

Јеси ли слободна после ручка?

Are you free after lunch? (addressed to a woman)

Јесам слободан, али само до четири.

I am free, but only until four. (male speaker, confirming)

Because сам, си, је, смо, сте, су are also perfect-tense auxiliaries, context distinguishes present be from a past construction. In Она је уморна, је links the subject and adjective. In Она је стигла, it helps form the perfect, and стигла agrees with a feminine subject.

Serbian also has будем, будеш, буде, будемо, будете, буду, traditionally described as the present of perfective бити. This series does not replace сам/јесам for a state holding now. It appears especially in future-oriented subordinate clauses, in да-clauses, and as the auxiliary of future II.

Кад будем код куће, јавићу ти се.

When I am at home, I’ll get in touch with you.

For ordinary present location, say Код куће сам. The Future II guide covers будем + l-participle constructions such as кад будем завршио/завршила.

💡
Do not put the full and clitic forms side by side: neutral ја сам, emphatic ја јесам, but not ја јесам сам.

хтети: Full Desire and Future Clitics

PersonFull presentFuture cliticNegative
јахоћућунећу
тихоћешћешнећеш
он / она / онохоћећенеће
михоћемоћемонећемо
вихоћетећетенећете
они / оне / онахоћећенеће

Full forms express willingness or desire and can carry stress. They take a noun or, very commonly, да + present. The short forms are unstressed future auxiliaries. The negative series is written as one word and can express either refusal/desire or future negation, depending on its complement.

Хоћемо да разговарамо с вама пре састанка.

We want to speak with you before the meeting.

Сутра ћемо разговарати с управником.

Tomorrow we will speak with the manager.

Нећу кафу, хвала; узећу чај.

I do not want coffee, thanks; I’ll have tea.

The infinitive is also standard after the future clitic: ћемо разговарати. In contemporary Serbian, да + present is especially frequent after full хтети: хоћемо да разговарамо. Neither pattern should be declared universally wrong; their distributions differ.

ићи and моћи

These verbs have ordinary personal endings attached to irregular present stems.

Personићимоћи
јаидеммогу
тиидешможеш
он / она / оноидеможе
миидемоможемо
виидетеможете
они / оне / онаидумогу

Learn the third-person plural explicitly: иду, but могу, identical to the first-person singular. Ићи combines with destination phrases such as у град and код лекара. Моћи normally takes да + present or an infinitive; да + present is especially natural in conversation.

Идемо код лекара чим завршимо доручак.

We are going to the doctor as soon as we finish breakfast.

Можеш ли да ми пошаљеш адресу ресторана?

Can you send me the restaurant’s address?

Данас не могу остати дуже на послу.

I cannot stay longer at work today.

In the last two examples, both да ми пошаљеш and the infinitive остати are standard. The choice is syntactic and stylistic, not a test of correctness.

Other High-Frequency Stem Sets

Several very common verbs are best learned through three principal forms. Some grammars call all of them irregular; others treat many as members of smaller historical patterns. The label matters less than knowing the usable forms.

Infinitive1st singular3rd pluralAspect and meaning
датидамдајуperfective: give
јестиједемједуimperfective: eat
рећикажемкажуperfective: say
доћидођемдођуperfective: come, arrive
узетиузмемузмуperfective: take
иматиимамимајуimperfective: have

The negative of имати is normally the fused paradigm немам, немаш, нема, немамо, немате, немају, not regular не имам.

Немамо више хлеба, па ћу узети један успут.

We have no more bread, so I’ll pick up a loaf on the way.

Кад дођеш до улаза, позови ме.

When you get to the entrance, call me.

Perfective дам, кажем, дођем, узмем are present-tense forms morphologically, but outside habitual or modal contexts they usually refer to a completed boundary in a future-oriented subordinate clause: кад дођеш when you arrive. They do not normally mean an action unfolding right now.

For the broader contrast between an ongoing imperfective present and a future-oriented perfective present, continue with Using the Present Tense.

💡
For a stem-changing verb, memorize the triangle infinitive — 1st singular — 3rd plural: рећи — кажем — кажу, доћи — дођем — дођу. It reveals more than the infinitive alone.

Clitic Order and Questions

Full forms can occupy the first position and take ли. Clitics normally come in the Serbian second-position cluster.

Да ли си му већ дала резервни кључ?

Have you already given him the spare key? (addressed to a woman)

Хоћеш ли ми јавити кад будеш спреман?

Will you let me know when you are ready? (addressed to a man)

In the first example, perfect auxiliary си precedes dative му. In the second, хоћеш ли is a full question form; the dative clitic ми follows the question unit. English inversion and do-support are not copied into Serbian.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the Right Series

Reply emphatically that you are at home, then make the statement negative.

Јесам код куће. — Нисам код куће.

I am at home. — I am not at home. Answer: emphatic јесам contrasts with fused negative нисам.

Task 2: Complete the Principal Forms

Give the first-person singular and third-person plural.

Ићи — идем — иду; моћи — могу — могу; доћи — дођем — дођу.

To go—I go—they go; can—I can—they can; to arrive—I arrive—they arrive. Answer: the infinitive does not expose the full present stem.

Common Mistakes

Using the clitic as a stressed short answer

❌ Сам, овде сам.

Incorrect—the initial affirmative short answer needs the stressed full form јесам.

✅ Јесам, овде сам.

Yes, I am; I’m here.

Writing the negative of хтети separately

❌ Не ћемо чекати последњи аутобус.

Incorrect—the negative future form нећемо is one word.

✅ Нећемо чекати последњи аутобус.

We will not wait for the last bus.

Regularizing моћи

❌ Ја можем да дођем раније.

Incorrect—the first-person singular is могу, not можем.

✅ Ја могу да дођем раније.

I can come earlier.

Building the present of ићи from the infinitive

❌ Сваког петка ићемо на пијацу.

Incorrect for a habitual present—ићи has the present form идемо; ићемо is future.

✅ Сваког петка идемо на пијацу.

We go to the market every Friday.

Treating a perfective present as an ongoing event

❌ Сада дођем кући и носим тешке кесе.

Incorrect for an arrival happening now—the perfective present дођем does not ordinarily describe an event in progress.

✅ Управо долазим кући и носим тешке кесе.

I am just coming home, and I am carrying heavy bags.

Key Takeaways

  • Бити has full, clitic, and fused negative present series.
  • Full хтети expresses desire; its clitics form the future; нећу and the rest of the negative series are one word.
  • Learn ићи — идем — иду and моћи — могу — могу as complete stem sets.
  • Principal forms reveal unpredictable alternations such as рећи — кажем — кажу and доћи — дођем — дођу.
  • Irregular morphology does not remove normal rules for complements, aspect, or clitic order.
