The ordinary Serbian verb for a person returning is the reflexive aspect pair враћати се / вратити се. Imperfective враћати се presents the trip back as ongoing, repeated, or characteristic; perfective вратити се presents one return as reaching its endpoint. The clitic се is part of this intransitive meaning, and removing it produces the related transitive verb “return something.”
Principal forms
The forms are regular once the two stems are known. The spelling ћ in враћати and т in вратити is part of the word, not free alternation. In the perfect, auxiliary clitics occupy second position and се remains in the cluster: вратио сам се, вратила си се, вратили смо се.
The table follows ordinary Serbian spelling, which does not mark pitch accent or vowel length. Accent is not an extra written ending and should not be inserted into normal messages; the accent-paradigm guide treats the spoken system separately.
Суботом се враћамо са пијаце пешке јер је центар затворен за саобраћај.
On Saturdays we walk back from the market because the city center is closed to traffic.
Вратила сам се по кишобран и зато закаснила на аутобус.
I went back for my umbrella and therefore missed the bus. (female speaker)
Repeated or ongoing return versus one completed return
Use imperfective враћати се for a regular journey back, an event in progress, or a general tendency. Use perfective вратити се when the relevant boundary is reached: someone is back at the point understood from context.
Док смо се враћали кући, почео је да пада снег.
While we were heading back home, it started to snow.
Јави ми се чим се вратиш у хотел.
Contact me as soon as you get back to the hotel.
The perfective present вратиш се in a time clause points forward even though English uses a simple present. In a main clause, a future return normally uses the future: вратићу се. In a repeated sequence, perfective present can mark each completed return.
Кад се вратим с тренинга, прво ставим опрему да се суши.
When I get back from training, the first thing I do is put my gear out to dry.
Destination, source, and route
The endpoint follows ordinary motion government. Use у/на + accusative, код + genitive, or directional кући. The source uses из, са, or од + genitive, depending on the kind of point departed from.
| Frame | Typical use |
|---|---|
| вратити се у + accusative | an interior, city, institution: у стан, у Ниш, у школу |
| вратити се на + accusative | activity, event, surface-like destination: на посао, на састанак |
| вратити се код + genitive | a person or professional: код сестре, код лекара |
| вратити се из / са / од + genitive | source: из града, с посла, од зубара |
После паузе смо се вратили у салу и наставили састанак.
After the break, we returned to the conference room and continued the meeting.
Мина се управо враћа од зубара, па ће ти се јавити касније.
Mina is on her way back from the dentist, so she'll contact you later.
Кући is a directional adverb meaning “homeward/home,” whereas код куће is a location meaning “at home.” A vehicle normally appears in the instrumental.
Вратили смо се кући последњим возом.
We returned home on the last train.
The motion-preposition guide explains why the English prepositions to and from do not map mechanically to one Serbian preposition.
Reflexive return versus returning an object
With се, the subject goes back: вратити се. Without се, враћати / вратити is transitive and the accusative object is what gets returned. A recipient commonly appears in the dative.
Врати ми пуњач кад завршиш позив.
Give me the charger back when you finish the call.
Врати ми се кад будеш спреман да разговарамо.
Come back to me when you're ready to talk. (male addressee)
The difference between those sentences is not cosmetic. In the first, ми is the recipient and пуњач is the returned object. In the second, се makes the subject the person who returns, while ми identifies the person approached emotionally or physically.
When several clitics occur, natural second-position order matters. Dative ми precedes се. Auxiliary forms other than third-person singular је—for example сам, си, смо, сте, су, ћу—precede the pronoun clitics: вратио сам ти се, сутра ћу ти се вратити. Auxiliary је normally closes a cluster, but it is omitted when се is present.
Нови колега нам се вратио после шест месеци рада у иностранству.
Our new colleague came back to us after six months of working abroad.
Here нам се вратио has dative нам, reflexive се, and the masculine l-participle вратио. The third-person singular auxiliary је is omitted when it would share the perfect cluster with reflexive се: вратио се, not вратио је се. The full clitic-cluster guide gives the general order.
Returning to a topic or condition
The pair extends naturally to activities, topics, earlier states, and routines. The destination still uses the case licensed by the phrase: на тему, на посао, у форму, у нормалу.
Хајде да се вратимо на питање трошкова после паузе.
Let's return to the question of costs after the break.
После повреде се полако враћа у форму.
After the injury, he is slowly getting back into shape.
These are neutral modern uses, not marked metaphors. By contrast, повратити is a separate verb: it can mean “recover/regain” and, in everyday speech, “vomit.” It must not be substituted simply because English has return or recover.
Imperatives and register
Perfective врати се / вратите се requests one complete return. Imperfective враћај се / враћајте се can urge the addressee to start heading back or to keep returning in a repeated setting. Tone determines whether a bare command is friendly or abrupt.
Вратите се до девет, јер после закључавамо главни улаз.
Come back by nine, because after that we lock the main entrance. (plural or polite)
Полако се враћај; стаза је клизава после кише.
Take your time coming back; the path is slippery after the rain. (informal singular)
Молим вас, вратите се is a polite request; plural morphology alone can represent either plural addressees or respectful singular address.
Micro-dialogue
„Кад се враћаш из Новог Сада?“ — „У недељу увече.“ — „Јави ми кад се вратиш, оставио си кључеве код мене.“
‘When are you coming back from Novi Sad?’ — ‘On Sunday evening.’ — ‘Let me know when you're back; you left your keys at my place.’ (male addressee)
The planned journey uses imperfective present враћаш се. The time clause selects perfective вратиш се because the call should follow the completed arrival.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Change the viewpoint
Write two versions of a return from work: one describing what happened during the trip back and one announcing that the speaker got home. Use the appropriate aspect and a natural source and destination.
Task 2: Keep or remove се
Translate: Return the book to Ana; Come back to Ana; We came back from the airport; When are you returning to work? Identify the accusative object, dative recipient, source, and destination.
Common Mistakes
❌ Вратио сам кући касно синоћ.
Incorrect — the intransitive meaning ‘came back’ requires reflexive се.
✅ Вратио сам се кући касно синоћ.
I came home late last night. (male speaker)
❌ Вратио сам се књигу у библиотеку.
Incorrect — when an object is returned, transitive вратити takes the accusative object without се.
✅ Вратио сам књигу у библиотеку пре рока.
I returned the book to the library before it was due. (male speaker)
❌ Враћамо се код куће око шест.
Incorrect for motion toward home — код куће means static ‘at home.’
✅ Враћамо се кући око шест.
We're coming home at about six.
❌ Кад ћеш се вратио с пута?
Incorrect — the future auxiliary cannot combine with an l-participle here.
✅ Кад ћеш се вратити с пута?
When will you come back from the trip?
❌ Она је се вратила пре осталих.
Incorrect clitic sequence — third-person singular је is omitted before reflexive се in the perfect.
✅ Она се вратила пре осталих.
She returned before the others.
Key Takeaways
- Враћати се profiles an ongoing or repeated return; вратити се profiles one return that reaches its endpoint.
- Keep се when the subject returns; omit it when someone returns an accusative object, optionally to a dative recipient.
- Use destination у/на + accusative, код + genitive, or кући; use source из/са/од + genitive.
- In the perfect say вратио сам се but third-person она се вратила, not она је се вратила.
