Serbian се is an unstressed clitic with several related but distinct jobs. It can mark an action directed back at the subject (пере се “washes himself/herself”), a reciprocal event (дописују се “they correspond with each other”), an inherent part of a lexical verb (нада се “hopes”), or an event with no expressed external causer (врата се отварају “the door is opening”).
English translations often omit any reflexive word, so learn се with the verb where it is lexical. Also remember that се never changes for person or gender: it is not a table of myself, yourself, herself. Full себе forms handle emphasis and prepositional phrases.
One clitic in every person
Using сећати се “remember,” the finite verb changes while се remains constant.
| Person | Present |
|---|---|
| ја | сећам се |
| ти | сећаш се |
| он / она / оно | сећа се |
| ми | сећамо се |
| ви | сећате се |
| они / оне / она | сећају се |
Сећам се тог ресторана, али не памтим адресу.
I remember that restaurant, but I don’t remember the address.
Да ли се сећате где сте паркирали?
Do you remember where you parked?
The object of сећати се is genitive: тог ресторана. The clitic and the case frame are both part of the lexical entry.
Се does not mark aspect. When a se-verb has an aspectual partner, both members retain the clitic and their government: imperfective сећати се + genitive presents an ongoing state or repeated remembering, while perfective сетити се + genitive presents the moment something comes to mind.
Сетио сам се где сам оставио кључеве.
I remembered where I had left the keys. (male speaker)
True reflexive: subject acts on itself
With a true reflexive, the subject is both initiator and affected participant. Everyday grooming and bodily actions commonly use this pattern.
Дете се већ само облачи.
The child already dresses by itself.
Оперите се пре него што уђете у базен.
Wash before entering the pool. (formal/plural addressee)
Посекао се док је отварао конзерву.
He cut himself while opening a can.
English sometimes uses an explicit reflexive (cut himself) and sometimes does not (get dressed, wash). Serbian lexical convention decides whether се appears.
Use full себе when the reflexive is contrastive or follows a preposition:
Не криви себе за туђу грешку.
Don’t blame yourself for someone else’s mistake.
Ретко говори о себи на састанцима.
She rarely talks about herself in meetings.
The clitic се cannot follow a preposition and cannot carry contrastive stress. See себе and се for the full case paradigm.
Reciprocal: participants act on one another
With a plural or coordinated subject, се can express mutual action.
Ана и Лука се чују сваког викенда.
Ana and Luka speak to each other every weekend.
После конференције смо се дописивали неколико месеци.
After the conference, we corresponded for several months.
Комшинице су се поздравиле преко ограде.
The female neighbors greeted each other over the fence.
Context must support more than one participant. If reciprocity could be unclear, add један другог / једна другу or међусобно, with the case required by the verb.
Две екипе су једна другој честитале на доброј утакмици.
The two teams congratulated each other on a good match.
Here dative једна другој makes the reciprocal relation explicit because честитати takes a dative recipient.
Lexical se-verbs: no literal “self” meaning
For many verbs, се is simply part of the lexeme. Removing it changes the meaning or produces a different argument structure.
| Verb | Government | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| бојати се | genitive | be afraid of |
| надати се | dative | hope for |
| смејати се | dative | laugh at |
| сећати се | genitive | remember |
| бринути се о | locative | take care of / worry about |
Деца се боје гласног усисивача.
The children are afraid of the loud vacuum cleaner.
Надамо се добрим вестима до краја недеље.
We’re hoping for good news by the end of the week.
Немојте се смејати његовој грешци.
Don’t laugh at his mistake.
Се is not an object meaning “themselves” in these examples. English prepositions also do not predict Serbian cases: бојати се selects genitive, while надати се and смејати се select dative.
Anticausative and middle events
Some se-constructions present a change or process without naming an external agent. The affected entity is the grammatical subject and controls agreement.
Врата се полако отварају.
The door is slowly opening.
Лед се отопио пре подне.
The ice melted before noon.
Ова тканина се лако гужва.
This fabric wrinkles easily.
These are not ordinary self-directed actions: the door does not intentionally open itself. The construction packages the event as spontaneous, characteristic, or without a relevant external causer. A passive reading can overlap in some contexts, but a clear se-passive involves an understood human or institutional agent and is treated on the se-passive and impersonal page.
Clitic placement across tense and mood
Се belongs in the Serbian clitic cluster. Its position changes with the material that hosts that cluster, not with an English reflexive position.
| Context | Example |
|---|---|
| present | Ана се смеје. |
| negative present | Ана се не смеје. |
| 1st-person perfect | Смејао сам се. |
| 3rd-person perfect | Ана се смејала. |
| Future I | Ана ће се смејати. |
| conditional | Ана би се смејала. |
In the affirmative third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted beside се: Ана се смејала, not Ана се је смејала. First person keeps сам: Смејао сам се. See perfect word order.
Сутра ћемо се наћи испред музеја.
Tomorrow we’ll meet outside the museum.
Не бих се ослањао само на један извор.
I wouldn’t rely on only one source. (male speaker)
Affirmative, negative, and question set
| Function | Example |
|---|---|
| affirmative | Сећаш се њеног имена. |
| negative | Не сећаш се њеног имена. |
| question | Да ли се сећаш њеног имена? |
Negation precedes the finite verb сећаш, while се stays in the early clitic area. Do not join не to the verb or move се to imitate English remember yourself.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Identify the function of се
Classify the first се as true reflexive and the second as lexical.
Умила се хладном водом, али се и даље бојала да ће закаснити.
She washed her face with cold water, but she was still afraid she would be late.
Task 2: Preserve government
Use надати се with “a quick solution” in the dative.
Надамо се брзом решењу овог проблема.
We’re hoping for a quick solution to this problem.
Common Mistakes
Changing се for person
❌ Ја ме облачим пре доручка.
Incorrect—reflexive се is invariant; do not replace it with the first-person object clitic ме.
✅ Облачим се пре доручка.
I get dressed before breakfast.
Translating lexical се literally
❌ Надам добрим вестима сутра.
Incorrect—the verb is lexical надати се and requires the clitic се plus dative.
✅ Надам се добрим вестима сутра.
I’m hoping for good news tomorrow.
Using the wrong case after a se-verb
❌ Дете се боји мрачну собу.
Incorrect—бојати се governs genitive, not accusative.
✅ Дете се боји мрачне собе.
The child is afraid of the dark room.
Retaining је beside се in the perfect
❌ Марија се је вратила пре ручка.
Incorrect—affirmative third-person singular је is omitted beside се.
✅ Марија се вратила пре ручка.
Marija returned before lunch.
Key Takeaways
- Се is invariant and can be reflexive, reciprocal, lexical, or anticausative/middle.
- Use full себе for contrast and after prepositions.
