The Reflexive Pronoun (sebe/se)

Serbian uses one reflexive pronoun for every person, gender, and number: себе/се means that an object refers back to the subject of its clause. English changes myself, yourself, herself, ourselves, and so on; Serbian changes neither person nor number. What changes is case and, in the accusative, whether the form is full себе or clitic се.

The standard Serbian forms

The reflexive pronoun has no nominative or vocative because it cannot itself be the grammatical subject. Its antecedent—the person or thing it refers back to—is the subject.

CaseFormTypical use
Nominative—No subject form
GenitiveсебеFull form; also after genitive-governing prepositions
DativeсебиRecipient or beneficiary identical with the subject
Accusativeсебе / сеFocused or prepositional full form / neutral clitic
InstrumentalсобомInstrumental complement, often after са
LocativeсебиAfter a locative-governing preposition

Посекла сам се док сам спремала вечеру.

I cut myself while I was making dinner.

Деца су себи направила сендвиче после школе.

The children made themselves sandwiches after school.

Понеси воду са собом, јер на стази нема чесме.

Take water with you, because there is no fountain on the trail.

The same forms work with every subject: сам се with “I,” си се with “you,” се with third-person singular, and смо се / сте се / су се in the plural. The verb and any participle—not the reflexive pronoun—show person, number, and sometimes gender.

💡
Do not search for separate Serbian words matching myself, herself, and themselves. Find the case required by the verb or preposition, then choose from себе, себи, собом, or clitic се.

Neutral se versus focused sebe

When the reflexive is a neutral direct object, unstressed се is usual. Full себе carries contrast or stands after a preposition.

Видео се у излогу и поправио капу.

He saw himself in the shop window and adjusted his cap.

На старој фотографији једва сам препознао себе.

In the old photograph I could barely recognize myself.

Она увек мисли на друге, а ретко на себе.

She always thinks about others and rarely about herself.

In the last two examples, себе is focused: it contrasts with a former appearance or with other people. After на in мислити на, the full accusative is obligatory because a preposition cannot take the clitic.

A standalone answer makes the full-versus-clitic contrast audible in a short exchange:

— Кога је Ана видела у огледалу? — Себе. Видела се чим је ушла у ходник.

— Who did Ana see in the mirror? — Herself. She saw herself as soon as she entered the hallway.

Standalone себе carries stress; the following neutral statement uses second-position се.

English sometimes uses -self only for emphasis: I did it myself. Serbian can use nominative expressions such as сам/сама/само for that meaning; object reflexive себе is not a general intensifier.

Сама сам поправила славину; нико ми није помогао.

I fixed the tap myself; nobody helped me.

Here feminine сама agrees with the speaker. It is not a case form of себе.

The antecedent is the clause subject

The reflexive normally refers to the subject of the smallest clause that contains it. This prevents an ordinary third-person pronoun from accidentally being understood as coreferential with that subject.

Ана је видела себе на снимку.

Ana saw herself in the recording.

Ана је видела њу на снимку.

Ana saw her—another woman—in the recording.

Петар је замолио Ану да говори о себи.

Petar asked Ana to talk about herself.

In the last sentence, the understood subject of да говори is Ana, so себи refers to Ana, not Petar. English speakers should not simply connect the reflexive to the nearest preceding noun; grammatical subjecthood and clause structure control the reference.

The same subject-oriented logic appears in reflexive possessive свој, but the two forms have different syntax. Себе fills a noun-like object or prepositional slot; свој modifies a possessed noun and agrees with it. Compare them on the свој page.

Where se sits in the clitic cluster

Weak се belongs in the second-position clitic cluster. With first- and second-person or plural perfect auxiliaries, the auxiliary precedes it.

Јуче сам се коначно наспавао.

Yesterday I finally got enough sleep.

После састанка смо се вратили пешке.

After the meeting we walked back.

With third-person singular perfect forms, auxiliary је is omitted next to reflexive се in standard Serbian: вратила се, not вратила се је. Negative није remains.

Милица се вратила раније, али се није дуго задржала.

Milica came back earlier, but she didn't stay long.

Other weak pronouns occur before се according to the normal cluster template.

Одмах му се извинила због неспоразума.

She apologized to him immediately for the misunderstanding.

See је and clitic clusters for the full ordering system.

Reflexive pronoun, reflexive verb, or reciprocal?

Not every се translates as literal self. With a truly reflexive action, subject and object identify the same participant. With a lexical reflexive verb such as смејати се “laugh” or надати се “hope,” се is part of the verb's dictionary form and should not be mechanically translated.

Насмејала се чим је прочитала поруку.

She laughed as soon as she read the message.

Replacing се with full себе would not create an emphatic version of “laugh”; it would destroy the lexical verb. Learn such verbs with се, as explained under reflexive verbs.

With a plural subject, се can also allow a reciprocal reading.

Видели су се после десет година.

They saw each other after ten years.

Context makes “each other” more plausible than “each person saw himself.” When that distinction matters, use an explicit reciprocal expression; see reciprocal constructions.

What about si?

Contemporary standard Serbian uses full dative себи; it does not have a neutral reflexive-dative clitic си parallel to accusative се. Reflexive si is standard Croatian and occurs regionally in some Serbian speech, so learners will encounter it in the wider BCMS area. It should be labeled rather than silently imported into standard Serbian.

Купио сам себи нове слушалице.

I bought myself new headphones.

The sequence си is, of course, fully standard Serbian as the second-person singular present form of бити “be.” That is a different word.

Ти си себи већ изабрала место.

You've already chosen a seat for yourself.

Here the first си is the auxiliary “are/have,” while себи is the dative reflexive. The distinction is grammatical, not orthographic.

💡
For standard Serbian, memorize one short reflexive form: accusative се. Use full себи for a reflexive recipient or beneficiary. Treat reflexive си as (Croatian; regional in some Serbian speech).

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the correct case

Complete three meanings: look at oneself (у + accusative is not used here; the verb directly takes the object), buy something for oneself (dative), and take something along with oneself (са + instrumental).

Погледала се у огледалу, купила себи кафу и понела је са собом.

She looked at herself in the mirror, bought herself a coffee, and took it with her.

Task 2: Track the local subject

Explain who себи refers to in the following sentence. It refers to Luka, the subject of the embedded clause.

Мина је рекла да ће Лука себи резервисати собу.

Mina said that Luka would reserve a room for himself.

Common Mistakes

Inventing a nominative reflexive subject

❌ Себе сам стигао раније.

Incorrect—себе cannot be the nominative subject; the verb already identifies the speaker.

✅ Стигао сам раније.

I arrived earlier.

Using a clitic after a preposition

❌ Понела је кишобран са се.

Incorrect—са requires full instrumental собом.

✅ Понела је кишобран са собом.

She took an umbrella with her.

Using Croatian or regional reflexive si as unmarked Serbian

❌ Купио сам си карту за сутра.

Incorrect in contemporary standard Serbian—the reflexive dative is the full form себи.

✅ Купио сам себи карту за сутра.

I bought myself a ticket for tomorrow.

Retaining auxiliary je beside se

❌ Јелена се је извинила због кашњења.

Incorrect in standard Serbian—the third-person singular perfect auxiliary је is omitted next to reflexive се.

✅ Јелена се извинила због кашњења.

Jelena apologized for being late.

Treating a lexical se as an emphatic object

❌ Смејала је себе цело вече.

Incorrect—смејати се is a lexical reflexive verb; себе cannot replace its clitic.

✅ Смејала се цело вече.

She laughed all evening.

Key Takeaways

  • Себе/се has one paradigm for all persons, genders, and numbers and no nominative form.
  • Neutral accusative objects use clitic се; focus and prepositions require a full case form.
  • The reflexive points to the local clause subject, not simply the nearest noun.
  • Standard Serbian uses dative себи, while reflexive-dative си is Croatian or regional.
  • Lexical reflexive and reciprocal readings must be learned from the verb and context.
