Serbian се is one invariant clitic with several constructions, not one word meaning English self. It can represent a true reflexive participant, support a reciprocal reading, belong permanently to a lexical verb, suppress an external causer, build a middle or passive, or mark a human-impersonal event with no nominative subject.
The forms often look identical. The reliable analysis comes from argument structure and agreement: who acts, what is affected, whether a nominative noun controls the verb, and whether the clause describes one event or a general disposition. The foundational agreement contrast appears on the se-passive and impersonal page; here it becomes one part of a wider taxonomy.
A diagnostic map
| Type | Core test | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| true reflexive | subject acts on itself; emphatic себе is possible | Ана се очешљала |
| reciprocal | plural participants act on one another | Ана и Мина се грле |
| lexical се | clitic belongs to dictionary entry | нада се успеху |
| anticausative | affected subject changes without an expressed causer | врата су се отворила |
| middle | subject has a characteristic disposition | књига се лако чита |
| se-passive | nominative patient controls agreement; generic agent suppressed | књиге се продају |
| impersonal се | no nominative subject; default singular/neuter agreement | овде се ради |
The categories have historical and semantic connections, and some real sentences allow more than one reading. The goal is not to force every token into a perfectly sealed box; it is to identify the diagnostics that matter for production.
True reflexive: one participant fills two roles
In a true reflexive event, the subject is both agent and affected participant.
Јелена се пажљиво очешљала пре фотографисања.
Jelena carefully combed her hair before the photo session.
Посекао се док је отварао картонску кутију.
He cut himself while opening the cardboard box.
Full себе makes the reflexive participant contrastive or follows a preposition:
Не кривим тебе; кривим себе што нисам проверио адресу.
I don't blame you; I blame myself for not checking the address. (male speaker)
This replacement test is helpful but not mechanical. Ordinary grooming verbs strongly prefer clitic се, while a stressed full form creates contrast. Се itself never changes for person, number, or gender.
Reciprocal се: plurality plus mutual action
With a plural or coordinated subject, a semantically suitable verb can receive a reciprocal interpretation.
Милица и Тамара се грле у знак поздрава.
Milica and Tamara hug each other as a greeting.
После расправе су загрлили једни друге.
After the argument, they hugged each other.
The full reciprocal replaces се and follows the transitive verb's government: загрлити некога takes accusative, hence једни друге. With a lexical se-verb, by contrast, the clitic remains: извинити се некоме requires се, while the reciprocal participant is dative једни другима. A bare се sentence can be ambiguous when self-directed action is also plausible.
Глумци су се фотографисали иза позорнице.
The actors photographed one another / had their photos taken backstage.
Context decides whether the event is reciprocal, reflexive, or arranged by an external photographer. Use the full object једни друге in place of се for unambiguous reciprocity, or recast the clause when the distinction matters.
Lexical се: part of the verb, not a participant
With бојати се, надати се, смејати се, сећати се, догодити се, the clitic belongs to the lexical entry. It cannot be translated as “oneself,” and removing it changes or destroys the verb.
Надамо се мирном решењу, али се припремамо и за дужи поступак.
We hope for a peaceful solution, but we are also preparing for a longer process.
Нико се не сећа када се тачно догодио први квар.
Nobody remembers exactly when the first breakdown occurred.
Government must be learned with the whole verb: надати се + dative, сећати се + genitive, припремати се за + accusative. Lexical се does not itself determine the following case.
Anticausative: a change without an expressed causer
An anticausative presents the affected entity as subject and leaves the external cause outside the clause.
Прозор се изненада отворио због промаје.
The window suddenly opened because of the draft.
Лед се отопио чим је сунце огрејало терасу.
The ice melted as soon as the sun warmed the terrace.
Compare the causative active:
Промаја је отворила прозор, а сунце је отопило лед.
The draft opened the window, and the sun melted the ice.
In the anticausative, the window is not opening itself intentionally, and no generic human agent is implied. That separates it from a se-passive. Врата су се отворила у осам normally presents the doors' change of state; it does not by itself mean that staff opened them. Compare an active human causer with a routine agent-backgrounding schedule:
Особље је отворило врата у осам.
The staff opened the doors at eight. (active human causer)
Врата се отварају у осам.
The doors are opened at eight. (routine schedule; agent backgrounded)
Middle construction: a characteristic, not one reported event
The middle evaluates how an entity behaves under a generic action. It often combines се with an adverb such as лако, тешко, добро.
Овај приручник се лако чита, али се тешко памте сви детаљи.
This manual is easy to read, but all the details are hard to remember.
Ланена кошуља се брзо гужва и споро суши.
A linen shirt wrinkles quickly and dries slowly.
The first clause does not report somebody reading the manual now. It attributes a disposition to the manual. Middle and passive analyses overlap in some descriptions, but the discourse function is distinct: a routine passive tells what people do; a middle evaluates what the affected entity is like to act on.
Se-passive: patient subject and agreement
A se-passive suppresses a generic or irrelevant agent. The former object becomes a nominative subject and controls agreement.
Сви захтеви се проверавају пре него што се изда дозвола.
All applications are checked before a permit is issued.
Улазнице су се продавале преко интернета до јуче.
Tickets were being sold online until yesterday.
Plural захтеви requires проверавају; plural feminine улазнице requires су се продавале. The agent is not normally restored with a heavy phrase. If the committee matters, active Комисија проверава захтеве is clearer.
Aspect still operates normally. Imperfective проверавају се presents routine or process; perfective провериће се presents one bounded future check.
Impersonal се: no nominative controller
Human-impersonal се describes what people generally do without promoting any participant to subject. Present agreement defaults to third-person singular; past agreement is neuter singular.
У овој лабораторији се ради у две смене.
People work in this laboratory in two shifts.
После предавања се дуго разговарало о новом преводу.
After the lecture, people discussed the new translation for a long time.
У лабораторији and о преводу are prepositional phrases, not subjects. They cannot trigger plural agreement. Contrast a passive with a visible plural patient:
У овој лабораторији се анализирају узорци воде.
Water samples are analyzed in this laboratory.
Now nominative plural узорци controls анализирају. The English translations may both use a passive, so agreement is the decisive Serbian test.
Dative experiencer plus impersonal се
Constructions such as спава ми се, иде нам се, не ради јој се express inclination. The experiencer is dative, and there is no nominative personal subject.
После ручка ми се спава, али морам да завршим смену.
I feel sleepy after lunch, but I have to finish my shift.
Не иде нам се кући док музика још свира.
We don't feel like going home while the music is still playing.
These are not reflexive versions of спавам or идемо. They package the urge as a state arising in the experiencer rather than a deliberate action.
Placement, clusters, and је omission
Whatever its function, clitic се occupies the same clitic system.
Рекла је да ће се резултати објавити у петак.
She said that the results would be published on Friday.
Ана се вратила раније, али нам се није јавила.
Ana returned earlier but did not contact us.
In affirmative third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted beside се: Ана се вратила, not Ана се је вратила. Negative није remains. Other persons keep their auxiliary: Ми смо се вратили.
A formal passage: several functions in one text
Када се нова процедура уведе, сви захтеви ће се обрађивати електронски. Очекује се да ће се време чекања скратити, али се запослени још припремају за промену. У пилот-фази се радило спорије него обично, јер су се два система повремено сукобљавала. Ипак, нови образац се лакше попуњава и корисници се ређе обраћају служби за помоћ.
Once the new procedure is introduced, all applications will be processed electronically. Waiting times are expected to decrease, but employees are still preparing for the change. During the pilot phase, work proceeded more slowly than usual because the two systems occasionally conflicted. Still, the new form is easier to fill in and users contact support less often. (formal/administrative)
The passage contains se-passive процедура се уведе and захтеви ће се обрађивати, raising-like impersonal очекује се, lexical припремају се, impersonal радило се, lexical interactional системи су се сукобљавали, and middle образац се лакше попуњава. Classification follows structure and discourse, not the mere presence of се.
Common Mistakes
Treating every се as “himself/herself”
❌ Нада се себе бољем резултату следећи пут.
Incorrect — lexical надати се already contains се; full себе cannot be added as a reflexive object.
✅ Нада се бољем резултату следећи пут.
She hopes for a better result next time.
Leaving a passive singular with a plural subject
❌ У овој сали се одржава концерти током целе године.
Incorrect — nominative plural концерти controls plural одржавају.
✅ У овој сали се одржавају концерти током целе године.
Concerts are held in this hall throughout the year.
Giving an impersonal past personal agreement
❌ После вечере су се дуго разговарали о путовању.
Incorrect — there is no nominative subject; impersonal past requires neuter singular разговарало се.
✅ После вечере се дуго разговарало о путовању.
After dinner, people talked about the trip for a long time.
Retaining је beside се
❌ Мина се је вратила последњим аутобусом.
Incorrect — affirmative third-person singular auxiliary је is omitted beside се.
✅ Мина се вратила последњим аутобусом.
Mina returned on the last bus.
Practice
1. Apply the diagnostics
Classify се in: Дете се умива. Пријатељи се грле. Плашим се висине. Стакло се разбило. Овај материјал се лако пере. Рачуни се шаљу петком. Овде се не пуши. State the subject, if there is one, and identify the agreement controller.
2. Contrast two event construals
Develop the door-opening situation as (a) a clear anticausative/automatic event and (b) an active event with a human agent. Possible answers: Аутоматска врата су се отворила чим је сензор регистровао покрет. Домар је отворио врата у осам.
Key Takeaways
- Analyze се through participant roles and agreement, not through one English translation.
- True reflexive and reciprocal readings involve participants; lexical се belongs to the verb itself.
- Anticausatives suppress a causer, middles describe a disposition, and se-passives promote a nominative patient.
- Impersonal се has no nominative controller and uses singular/neuter default agreement.
- Every type keeps се in the clitic cluster; affirmative third-person singular је is omitted beside it.
