Every finite Serbian clause has its own word-order domain. In a subordinate clause, the subordinator or relative/interrogative expression usually supplies the first unit, so clitics gather immediately after it: да ми је, јер се није, кад ћемо, који му је. The remaining constituents can move for topic, focus, and rhythm, but they cannot split or export that cluster freely.
English encourages two recurring errors: placing an overt subject directly after the subordinator and postponing pronouns until the verb, or treating a complex sentence as one clause with one auxiliary area. Serbian instead calculates placement independently inside every bracketed finite clause.
First bracket the clauses
Consider three domains in one sentence:
Милица ми је рекла да ће ти послати документ који си јој јуче предао.
Milica told me that she would send you the document that you handed her yesterday.
The matrix clause has ми је after Милица. The content clause begins with да, which hosts ће ти. The relative clause begins with који, which hosts си јој. Each cluster belongs to one predicate and cannot be merged with another.
Simple subordinators host the cluster
After да, кад(а), ако, јер, иако, чим, док, пошто, unstressed auxiliaries and pronouns normally come immediately after the connector in their fixed internal order.
Верујем да ми је Ана оставила резервни кључ на рецепцији.
I believe Ana left a spare key for me at reception.
Ако ти се Марко јави, реци му да смо већ кренули.
If Marko contacts you, tell him that we have already left.
Остали смо дуже јер нам се рачунар поново покварио.
We stayed longer because our computer broke down again.
The embedded subjects Ана, Марко, рачунар follow the early clitic cluster. They do not stand between the subordinator and the clitics in the neutral pattern.
❌ Надам се да Ана ми је оставила кључ на рецепцији.
Incorrect neutral placement — да hosts the embedded cluster ми је before the subject Ана.
✅ Надам се да ми је Ана оставила кључ на рецепцији.
I hope Ana left the key for me at reception.
This does not mean the subject must always be adjacent to the cluster. Other full constituents can be arranged after it for discourse, but the clitics themselves remain early.
Complex subordinators count as a complete opening
Multiword connectors such as зато што, пре него што, као да, без обзира на то што form the opening relation. The clitic cluster follows the complete connector, not an arbitrary word inside it.
Нисмо почели зато што нам координатор још није послао коначну верзију.
We did not start because the coordinator had not yet sent us the final version.
Проверила је адресу пре него што нам је наручила такси.
She checked the address before ordering us a taxi.
Говорио је као да му се ништа необично није догодило.
He spoke as though nothing unusual had happened to him.
In зато што нам, the full causal connector precedes нам. In пре него што нам је, cluster нам је follows што, the final element of the connector. Do not insert an auxiliary between пре and него што.
Relative and embedded interrogative words are internal clause elements
A relative pronoun both links the clause to its antecedent and fills a case role inside the subordinate clause. It also supplies the opening that hosts clitics.
То је лекарка којој сам послао резултате прошле недеље.
That is the doctor to whom I sent the results last week. (male speaker)
Пронашли смо уговор који нам је недостајао у архиви.
We found the contract that we had been missing in the archive.
Embedded question words behave similarly:
Не знам када ће нам комисија послати одговор.
I don't know when the committee will send us a reply.
Питај га коме је јуче предао оригиналну потврду.
Ask him who he handed the original certificate to yesterday.
The relative or interrogative form keeps the case required by its own clause—dative којој/коме, for example. With masculine inanimate antecedents, који is syncretic: it can be nominative, as with subject уговор који нам је недостајао, or accusative, as with object документ који си јој предао. Other genders and masculine animates distinguish additional forms. Its position is not merely a place for a translated English that.
Internal cluster order remains fixed
Subordination changes the external host, not the order inside the cluster. A useful template is auxiliary other than је → dative → accusative/genitive → се → auxiliary је, with ли in its question slot.
Рекао сам да бих ти га послао одмах да сам имао тачну адресу.
I said I would have sent it to you immediately if I had had the correct address. (male speaker)
Важно је да нам се сви учесници пријаве до петка.
It is important that all participants register with us by Friday.
The clusters are да бих-ти-га and да нам-се. An overt subject comes afterward. With third-person singular perfect је, the auxiliary closes a pronominal cluster: да ми га је послала.
❌ Тврди да је ми га послала јуче.
Incorrect cluster order — dative ми and accusative га precede third-person auxiliary је.
✅ Тврди да ми га је послала јуче.
He claims that she sent it to me yesterday.
Negation belongs inside the subordinate predicate
Negative finite forms remain after the early pronominal/reflexive clitics.
Отишла је раније јер јој се колега није јавио.
She left earlier because her colleague did not contact her.
Подаци су уклоњени како се корисници не би могли препознати.
The data were removed so that the users could not be identified.
In јој се колега није јавио, dative јој and reflexive се form the early cluster, while subject колега precedes the negative predicate није јавио. Likewise, како се корисници не би... keeps се early and places the subject before negative conditional не би. English auxiliary order cannot predict either sequence.
No automatic clitic climbing across a finite boundary
Matrix and subordinate predicates keep their clitics unless a genuine restructuring construction licenses variation. A finite да clause is not normally a container from which any object pronoun may be pulled into the matrix cluster.
Ивана је обећала да ће ми га послати пре краја дана.
Ivana promised that she would send it to me before the end of the day.
❌ Ана ми га је рекла да ће послати после састанка.
Incorrect for the intended meaning — moving ми га into the matrix clause makes it depend on рекла rather than послати.
✅ Ана је рекла да ће ми га послати после састанка.
Ana said that she would send it to me after the meeting.
The altered string might suggest that Ana “said it to me,” which is a different argument structure, while послати is left without its intended objects. Modal and restructuring environments show genuine variation, treated separately on clitic climbing variation; finite clause boundaries are not generally transparent.
Information structure after the cluster
Once the early cluster is secure, full constituents can organize topic and focus. Compare three embedded messages:
Знам да је Јелена јуче послала уговор.
I know that Jelena sent the contract yesterday. (neutral embedded subject topic)
Знам да је уговор јуче послала Јелена, а не Маја.
I know it was Jelena, not Maja, who sent the contract yesterday. (final subject focus)
Знам да је Јелена уговор послала јуче, а прилоге данас.
I know Jelena sent the contract yesterday and the attachments today. (parallel contrast)
The auxiliary је stays after да in all three. What changes is the ordering of full phrases and thus the information path. Serbian normally leaves nuclear stress unmarked in writing; explicit contrast such as а не Маја disambiguates the focus.
Subject pronouns are often omitted when agreement and discourse identify them. An overt pronoun can be contrastive:
Мислио сам да ћеш ти водити разговор, а не да ћу га водити ја.
I thought you would lead the conversation, not that I would lead it. (male speaker)
Here final ти/ја carry contrast. Their presence is motivated by discourse, not by an English requirement for overt subjects.
Fronted subordinate clauses and the main clause
When an adverbial subordinate clause comes first, it is normally followed by a comma. The following main clause then calculates its own opening and cluster.
Кад нам пошаљу исправљену верзију, одмах ћемо је проследити правној служби.
When they send us the corrected version, we will immediately forward it to the legal department.
The time clause has кад нам. The main clause begins with adverb одмах, which hosts ћемо је. Neither cluster can use material from the other side of the comma as its host.
If the main verb itself begins the clause, it can host a following clitic: Проследићемо је одмах. Second position is structural and prosodic, not “the second written word after the comma.”
A formal passage with nested domains
Када нам надлежна служба достави податке, проверићемо да ли су их регионалне канцеларије већ потврдиле. Иако се прелиминарни резултати могу објавити раније, важно је да их у коначни извештај укључимо тек пошто их независни тим поново прегледа. Ко буде желео да их користи, мораће да наведе извор који му је омогућио приступ.
When the competent department delivers the data to us, we will check whether the regional offices have already confirmed them. Although the preliminary results may be published earlier, it is important that we include them in the final report only after an independent team reviews them again. Whoever wishes to use them will have to cite the source that provided access. (formal/administrative)
The passage gives each subordinate predicate its own early architecture: када нам, да ли су их, иако се, да их, пошто их, ко буде, another да их, and који му је. In ко буде, future-II буде is a full finite form rather than a clitic; the other bold strings show connectors followed by early clitics. Repetition is not stylistic clutter—it marks the internal architecture of the sentence.
Common Mistakes
Applying English subject–auxiliary order after да
❌ Рекла је да Марко ће нам донети уговор.
Incorrect — future clitic ће belongs immediately after да; the subject follows.
✅ Рекла је да ће нам Марко донети уговор.
She said that Marko would bring us the contract.
Postponing an object clitic until the lexical verb
❌ Не знам када ће директор потписати га.
Incorrect — unstressed га belongs in the early embedded cluster after када ће.
✅ Не знам када ће га директор потписати.
I don't know when the director will sign it.
Treating a complex connector as separable
❌ Вратили смо се пре смо него што потписали записник.
Incorrect — пре него што is one subordinating expression, followed by the clause cluster смо.
✅ Вратили смо се пре него што смо потписали записник.
We returned before we signed the minutes.
Using the matrix opening to host an embedded clitic
❌ Јована га је рекла да ће донети сутра.
Incorrect for ‘Jovana said she would bring it’ — га is the object of embedded донети and must remain after да ће.
✅ Јована је рекла да ће га донети сутра.
Jovana said that she would bring it tomorrow.
Practice
1. Rebuild three domains
Repair: Ана ми је рекла Марко ће послати јој га кад заврши ће састанак. First bracket the clauses, then place each cluster.
One answer is Ана ми је рекла да ће јој га Марко послати кад се састанак заврши. Explain ми је, да ће јој га, and кад се as three independent clusters.
2. Change embedded focus
Start from Знам да је Милош јуче послао понуду. Produce a version with понуда as topic and Милош as final corrective focus, then a version contrasting јуче with данас. Keep embedded је after да.
Key Takeaways
- Every finite clause has its own clitic and information-structure domain.
- Subordinators, relative pronouns, and embedded question words normally host the early cluster.
- Complex connectors remain intact; place the cluster after the whole connector.
- Internal cluster order does not change in a subordinate clause, and clitics do not freely cross a finite boundary.
- After the cluster, full constituents can move for topic and focus without changing their case or agreement roles.
