Relative Clauses in Depth

Serbian relative clauses attach to a noun phrase and identify or describe its referent. This page assumes the forms of који are known and focuses on attachment, punctuation, possessive чији, and prepositions. The pronoun agrees with its antecedent in gender and number, but its case comes from its role inside the relative clause.

Restrictive versus supplementary attachment

A restrictive relative identifies which member of a set is meant and normally has no commas. A supplementary relative adds information about an already identifiable referent and is enclosed by commas.

Запослени који раде од куће добиће нову опрему.

Employees who work from home will receive new equipment.

Милан, који ради од куће, данас долази у канцеларију.

Milan, who works from home, is coming to the office today.

The first selects a subset of employees. The second presupposes Milan and adds a comment. Commas therefore change reference, not merely breathing.

Књиге које су на столу припадају библиотеци.

The books that are on the table belong to the library.

Ове књиге, које су на столу, припадају библиотеци.

These books, which are on the table, belong to the library.

Internal case and prepositions

То је лекар којем потпуно верујем.

That is a doctor whom I trust completely.

То је лекар с којим сам јуче разговарала.

That is the doctor I spoke with yesterday. (female speaker)

Dative којем comes from веровати, instrumental којим from с. Serbian fronts the preposition with the relative form; it does not strand it as English can.

Пронашли смо салу у којој ће бити одржана конференција.

We found the hall in which the conference will be held.

Do not copy the main-clause case of the antecedent. Accusative салу is object of пронашли, while locative којој belongs after у inside the relative.

💡
Build the relative clause as a complete sentence with a gap, determine the gap's case or preposition, then choose the matching form of који.

Possessive чији

Чији links a possessed noun inside the relative clause to an antecedent possessor. It agrees with the possessed noun, not with the antecedent.

Упознала сам архитекту чији је пројекат победио на конкурсу.

I met the architect whose project won the competition. (female speaker)

Разговарали смо с ауторком чије су књиге преведене на пет језика.

We spoke with the author whose books have been translated into five languages.

Masculine чији agrees with пројекат; feminine plural чије agrees with књиге. The antecedents архитекту/ауторком do not determine those endings.

То је породица чијој смо деци помогли после поплаве.

That is the family whose children we helped after the flood.

The form чијој is feminine singular because it agrees with the collective noun деца, whose oblique forms behave like a singular noun of the -а declension: деци, с децом. English whose never reveals this agreement.

Attachment to complex noun phrases

When two nouns precede a relative, the attachment may be ambiguous.

Разговарала сам са сестром директора која живи у Краљеву.

I spoke with the director's sister who lives in Kraljevo. (која most naturally attaches to сестром)

Feminine која forces attachment to сестром, not masculine директора. When gender/number does not disambiguate, rewrite.

Прегледали смо извештај комисије који је објављен јуче.

We reviewed the committee report that was published yesterday. (Masculine који points to извештај.)

Прегледали смо извештај комисије која је заседала јуче.

We reviewed the report of the committee that met yesterday. (Feminine која points to комисија.)

If both potential antecedents share features, place the clause next to its antecedent or repeat the noun. Avoid relying on world knowledge alone in formal prose.

Coordinated relative clauses

Two relatives can share one antecedent. Repeat the relative marker when roles differ or clarity benefits.

Тражимо кандидата који говори немачки и који има искуства у продаји.

We are looking for a candidate who speaks German and has sales experience.

When the same nominative subject continues, the second који may be omitted: који говори... и има.... When case roles change, repeat it.

То је кандидат којег смо интервјуисали и којем смо понудили посао.

That is the candidate whom we interviewed and to whom we offered a job.

Accusative којег and dative којем cannot collapse into one invariant form.

English zero relatives are not neutral Serbian

English omits that in the book I bought. Serbian retains који or uses a separate што strategy.

Књига коју сам наручила стигла је јутрос.

The book I ordered arrived this morning. (female speaker)

Full што + resumptive clitic choices are already covered on the који versus што page; do not mix the strategies accidentally.

An edited paragraph

Посетили смо музеј који је недавно обновљен и разговарали с кустоскињом чији је тим припремио изложбу. Главна сала, у којој су изложени најстарији предмети, поново ће бити отворена у петак.

We visited the museum that was recently renovated and spoke with the curator whose team prepared the exhibition. The main hall, in which the oldest objects are displayed, will reopen on Friday.

The first relative restricts музеј; чији agrees with possessed тим; the comma relative supplements already identified главна сала.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose punctuation

Гости који су резервисали вечеру нека дођу у осам. — Гости, који су већ резервисали вечеру, чекају у холу.

Guests who booked dinner should come at eight. — The guests, who have already booked dinner, are waiting in the lobby. Answer: subset versus supplementary information.

Task 2: Resolve attachment

Извештај агенције који касни треба хитно завршити.

The agency report, which is late, must be finished urgently. Answer: masculine који attaches to извештај; rewrite if another reading is intended.

Common Mistakes

Copying English zero marking

❌ Филм смо гледали синоћ траје три сата.

Incorrect—Serbian needs a visible relative link.

✅ Филм који смо гледали синоћ траје три сата.

The film we watched last night is three hours long.

Stranding a preposition

❌ То је колега који сам путовала са.

Incorrect—front с with instrumental којим.

✅ То је колега с којим сам путовала.

That is the colleague I traveled with. (female speaker)

Making чији agree with the possessor

❌ Упознала сам жену чији ћерка ради овде.

Incorrect—чија agrees with feminine ћерка.

✅ Упознала сам жену чија ћерка ради овде.

I met the woman whose daughter works here. (female speaker)

Copying English comma habits

❌ Људи, који имају карту, могу да уђу.

Incorrect for the intended subset reading—commas imply that all identified people have tickets.

✅ Људи који имају карту могу да уђу.

People who have a ticket may enter.

Key Takeaways

  • Restrictive relatives identify a referent; supplementary relatives add comma-delimited information.
  • The relative form gets case from its internal role, and prepositions move with it.
  • Чији agrees with the possessed noun, not the antecedent possessor.
  • Agreement and placement help resolve attachment to complex noun phrases.
  • Serbian normally keeps an overt relative strategy where English permits a zero object relative.
