Expressing Purpose

Serbian purpose expressions differ in what they package. Да + present presents a goal as an ordinary finite event; да би / како би + conditional marks the intended outcome explicitly; ради + genitive and за + accusative package purpose as a noun phrase; and expressions such as с циљем да frame it as an institutional objective.

The central semantic test is simple: a purpose is intended, not asserted as achieved. If the second event is reported as an actual consequence, Serbian needs a result construction such as тако да, not a purpose marker. The narrower како би versus да guide provides a quick choice workflow; this page builds the complete purpose toolbox around it.

Neutral finite purpose: да + present

Everyday Serbian most often uses да + present after an action performed with a goal. The morphological present does not mean present time; its time is interpreted relative to the main action.

Свратила сам у апотеку да купим лек за кашаљ.

I stopped by the pharmacy to buy cough medicine. (female speaker)

Позваћу те касније да проверимо све датуме пре пријаве.

I'll call you later so that we can check all the dates before applying.

The first example has the same understood subject in both clauses. The second changes from singular caller to inclusive ми: the person called will join the checking. English to check can hide this distinction; Serbian finite проверимо makes it explicit.

A different subordinate subject is equally possible:

Оставили смо кључ код комшинице да деца могу да уђу после школе.

We left the key with the neighbor so that the children can get in after school.

The main subject is ми; the purpose subject is деца. An infinitive alone cannot express that change of subject.

Aspect shapes the intended goal. Perfective купим, проверимо, уђу presents an endpoint. Imperfective is natural when the goal is continued or repeated activity:

Ставио је подсетник на телефон да редовно узима терапију.

He set a reminder on his phone so that he would take his medication regularly.

💡
Do not ask whether the verb after да “looks present.” Ask who is meant to act and whether the intended event is a process, repetition, or bounded result.

Да би and како би: purpose made explicit

Both да би and како би introduce a conditional form. The auxiliary must agree with the subject of the purpose clause: бих, би, бисмо, бисте, би plus the agreeing active past participle.

Искључио сам обавештења да бих могао мирно да завршим анализу.

I turned off notifications so that I could finish the analysis in peace. (male speaker)

Послали смо материјал раније како би учесници имали времена да припреме питања.

We sent the material early so that the participants would have time to prepare questions.

In the first sentence, first-person singular purpose requires бих могао. In the second, plural учесници controls би имали. The conditional belongs to the embedded purpose subject, not automatically to the main-clause subject.

Како би is useful when the writer wants to foreground a measure and its rationale, especially in instructions, reports, and administrative prose. Plain да can express the same basic purpose more compactly. These are distributional tendencies, not a rule that reserves како би for all formal language or excludes it from conversation.

Како бисмо смањили редове, отворили смо још два шалтера.

To reduce the lines, we opened two more service counters.

The fronted purpose clause frames the following measure and takes a comma. When it follows and is closely integrated, no comma is normally needed: Отворили смо још два шалтера како бисмо смањили редове.

Negative purpose

Plain purpose uses да не + present. With како би, negative не би belongs to the conditional, while object and reflexive clitics keep their normal early positions.

Сачувај потврду да не заборавиш број пријаве.

Save the confirmation so that you don't forget the application number.

Подаци су шифровани како се корисници не би могли препознати.

The data were encrypted so that the users could not be identified.

The natural sequence is како се корисници не би могли..., not a word-for-word English order with се after the conditional. Each purpose clause has its own clitic domain.

Ради + genitive: purpose as a nominal goal

Ради governs the genitive and means “for the sake of / for the purpose of.” It is concise with abstract nouns and is common in notices, explanations, legal language, and carefully structured prose.

Ради безбедности, споредни улаз остаће закључан после осам.

For safety reasons, the side entrance will remain locked after eight.

Састанак је одложен ради додатних консултација са стручним тимом.

The meeting was postponed for additional consultations with the expert team.

In contemporary neutral usage, ради typically presents an intended aim. Због + genitive primarily presents a cause. Compare:

Остали смо код куће због олује, а прозоре смо затворили ради безбедности.

We stayed home because of the storm, and we closed the windows for safety.

The storm caused the staying; safety motivated the closing. Real contexts can blur cause and purpose, but this contrast is the reliable editing baseline.

За + accusative and limited за + infinitive

За + accusative identifies intended user, use, occasion, or goal object: поклон за сестру, новац за пут, сала за састанке.

Припремили смо кратко упутство за нове кориснике и простор за практичну вежбу.

We prepared a short guide for new users and space for a practical exercise.

With activities, edited Serbian often prefers за + verbal noun: за читање, за вежбање, за попуњавање.

На крају приручника налазе се задаци за самостално вежбање.

At the end of the manual there are exercises for independent practice.

За + infinitive is nevertheless widespread in actual Serbian in certain practical labels and idiomatic phrases, especially за понети, нешто за појести, нема се шта за додати. Its standard-language status is disputed: conservative Serbian normative guides classify the pattern as substandard and recommend a verbal noun or finite clause, while descriptive research documents it as frequent and productive. Acceptance also varies among speakers and across the BCMS standards. Learners should recognize it, but should not extend it mechanically or rely on it in conservative edited prose.

Узећемо две кафе за понети и нешто за појести успут.

We'll get two coffees to go and something to eat on the way. (widespread informal usage; avoided by conservative editors)

For a neutral edited instruction, текст за читање or текст који треба прочитати is usually clearer than inventing a new за + infinitive phrase.

Lexical frames: с циљем да, у намери да, не би ли

С циљем да explicitly labels an objective and is common in institutional or academic prose (formal/administrative). У намери да foregrounds the actor's intention. Both take finite clauses.

Програм је покренут с циљем да се младим истраживачима олакша приступ архиви.

The program was launched with the aim of making archive access easier for young researchers. (formal)

Вратио се у канцеларију у намери да мирно разговара с директорком.

He returned to the office intending to speak calmly with the director.

Не би ли presents an attempted goal whose achievement is uncertain, often with a nuance of effort or hope.

Поново је позвала службу подршке не би ли коначно добила јасан одговор.

She called support again in the hope of finally getting a clear answer.

The negative-looking не is part of this purposive pattern; the meaning is not “so that she would not receive.” Do not use it as a transparent synonym in every context.

Purpose versus complement and result

Surface да does not prove that a clause is purposive.

Желим да завршим извештај пре ручка.

I want to finish the report before lunch. (content of the desire, not purpose)

Остала сам дуже да завршим извештај пре ручка.

I stayed longer to finish the report before lunch. (purpose; female speaker)

The second clause answers why the speaker stayed. Now compare an achieved result:

Остала сам дуже, тако да сам завршила извештај пре ручка.

I stayed longer, so I finished the report before lunch. (actual result; female speaker)

Purpose does not entail success. Остала сам да завршим, али нисам успела is coherent; тако да сам завршила, али нисам завршила is contradictory.

One scenario in three registers

Imagine a clinic introducing online appointments.

Conversation:

Закажи преко сајта да не чекаш у реду.

Book through the website so you don't have to wait in line. (informal)

Formal instruction:

Закажите термин преко сајта како бисте скратили време чекања.

Book an appointment through the website to reduce your waiting time. (formal/plural address)

Administrative explanation:

Уведено је електронско заказивање с циљем да се смање гужве и омогући равномернији распоред прегледа.

Online booking was introduced with the aim of reducing crowds and enabling a more even appointment schedule. (administrative)

The intended outcome stays similar. What changes is packaging: integrated everyday action, explicit reader-oriented rationale, then nominalized institutional objective.

Common Mistakes

Copying English in order to as a bare infinitive with a different subject

❌ Оставила сам поруку за он да ме позове.

Incorrect — English 'for him to call' requires a finite Serbian clause; the recipient is dative му and the embedded subject is encoded by позове.

✅ Оставила сам му поруку да ме позове.

I left him a message asking him to call me. (female speaker)

Using an infinitive after како би

❌ Проширили смо пролаз како би омогућити пролаз особама у колицима.

Incorrect — како би requires a conditional predicate, not a bare infinitive.

✅ Проширили смо пролаз како бисмо омогућили пролаз особама у колицима.

We widened the passage to provide access for wheelchair users.

Mismatching the conditional subject

❌ Раније смо кренули како би стигли пре гужве.

Incorrect — first-person plural purpose requires бисмо стигли.

✅ Раније смо кренули како бисмо стигли пре гужве.

We left earlier so that we would arrive before the traffic.

Reporting intention as achieved result

❌ Убрзали смо корак, тако да стигнемо пре мрака.

Incorrect for purpose — тако да presents a result relation, while present стигнемо leaves the intended goal pattern mismatched.

✅ Убрзали смо корак да бисмо стигли пре мрака.

We quickened our pace in order to arrive before dark.

Practice

1. Repackage one goal

Express “We opened another counter to reduce waiting” with (a) да + present, (b) fronted како би, (c) ради + genitive, and (d) с циљем да. Then label the likely discourse setting of each.

Possible forms: Отворили смо још један шалтер да смањимо чекање. Како бисмо смањили чекање, отворили смо још један шалтер. Отворили смо још један шалтер ради краћег чекања. Још један шалтер отворен је с циљем да се скрати време чекања.

2. Diagnose да

Classify the clause as complement, purpose, or result: Надам се да долази. Дошао је да разговарамо. Остао је дуже, тако да смо све проверили. Explain whether achievement is asserted.

Key Takeaways

  • Да + present is the neutral finite purpose construction and can have the same or a different subject.
  • Да би / како би + conditional makes intended outcome explicit; its auxiliary and participle agree with the purpose-clause subject.
  • Ради + genitive packages an aim nominally; за + accusative marks intended use or user.
  • За + infinitive is widespread in restricted practical and colloquial patterns but normatively disputed, not a safe template for every purpose.
  • С циљем да and у намери да lexicalize objective and intention; тако да reports a result rather than a goal.
