Concession and Mixed Conditionals

A condition says that one situation depends on another. A concession says that one situation holds despite another, contrary to an expectation. Serbian keeps that distinction visible: иако normally concedes a fact, чак и ако concedes an open possibility, and чак и да or макар can concede a remote, hypothetical, or counterfactual possibility.

Mixed conditionals add a second dimension: the condition and consequence belong to different times. The essential task is therefore to track two things separately—reality status and time reference—instead of translating every English even if, although, or would have with one formula. Review the ordinary real/unreal system first on conditional sentences.

Factual concession: иако, мада, премда

Use иако when the speaker presents the subordinate proposition as true, then asserts a result that defeats the normal expectation.

Иако је целе ноћи падала киша, јутарњи лет није каснио.

Although it rained all night, the morning flight was not delayed.

Иако познаје све чланове тима, на састанцима ретко говори.

Although she knows every member of the team, she rarely speaks in meetings.

The tense is ordinary: past rain, present knowledge. Иако does not require a special Serbian “subjunctive.” Мада is also common in speech and writing; премда occurs readily in edited prose. These are tendencies, not rigid register walls.

Мада смо кренули касније него што смо планирали, стигли смо пре затварања.

Although we left later than planned, we arrived before closing.

Премда су налази ограничени, истраживање отвара важно питање.

Although the findings are limited, the study raises an important question. (academic)

The main clause is not logically caused by the concession. Rather, the concession cancels an inference: rain normally delays flights, late departure normally leads to late arrival, and limited findings normally weaken importance.

Open hypothetical concession: чак и ако

Чак и ако means “even if” when the condition remains a real possibility. Future reference commonly uses present morphology, often a perfective present for one bounded event.

Чак и ако воз закасни, стићи ћемо пре почетка представе.

Even if the train is delayed, we'll arrive before the performance starts.

Чак и ако не добијемо додатна средства, наставићемо рад у мањем обиму.

Even if we do not receive additional funding, we will continue the work on a smaller scale.

Закасни and добијемо are present forms, but their perfective aspect packages possible future events. English future will inside an even if clause should not trigger Serbian Future I automatically.

❌ Чак и ако ће воз закаснити, сачекаћемо га.

Incorrect in the neutral open-condition pattern — Serbian normally uses present закасни after чак и ако, not Future I.

✅ Чак и ако воз закасни, сачекаћемо га.

Even if the train is delayed, we'll wait for it.

💡
Use иако for an accepted fact and чак и ако for an open possibility. English even though versus even if reflects the same semantic contrast more clearly than English verb form does.

Remote or counterfactual concession: чак и да

Чак и да asks the listener to grant a hypothetical situation for the sake of argument. A present form can express a remote present scenario; the main clause commonly contains Conditional I.

Чак и да имам слободну недељу, не бих кренуо на тако дуг пут без припреме.

Even if I had a free week, I would not set out on such a long trip without preparation. (male speaker)

Чак и да нам понуде боље услове, тешко бисмо променили одлуку.

Even if they offered us better terms, we would be unlikely to change our decision.

For a counterfactual past concession, use the perfect inside the да clause and a conditional consequence:

Чак и да сам раније видео упозорење, не бих могао да зауставим поступак.

Even if I had seen the warning earlier, I would not have been able to stop the procedure. (male speaker)

Serbian Conditional I itself does not morphologically distinguish present from past counterfactual consequence. The perfect in the subordinate clause and time adverbials supply the past frame. A more elaborate Conditional II is possible but not required for ordinary mixed or past counterfactual meaning.

Макар: conceding an extreme or accepted cost

Concessive макар often means “even if,” “even though,” or “even at the cost of.” It is compact and idiomatic across registers, though particular optative patterns can sound elevated.

Макар падала киша, пешачићемо до видиковца.

Even if it rains, we'll walk to the viewpoint.

Макар ми понудили двоструку плату, не бих поново прихватила такав распоред.

Even if they offered me double the salary, I would not accept that schedule again. (female speaker)

The forms падала and понудили are active past participles without an auxiliary in a concessive-optative pattern. Learners can understand this as a compact hypothetical clause; productive use should begin with high-frequency models.

Do not confuse clausal макар with particle макар “at least”:

Ако већ не можеш да дођеш, макар ми пошаљи поруку.

If you really can't come, at least send me a message.

Here макар modifies the minimum requested action; it does not introduce its own concessive clause.

Exhaustive concession: ма колико, ко год, шта год

These expressions range over every degree, person, or option. The conclusion holds no matter which value is chosen.

Ма колико пажљиво прочитао уговор, увек провери и ситна слова.

However carefully you read the contract, always check the fine print too. (addressing a man)

Ко год да преузме пројекат, мораће прво да разговара с клијентом.

Whoever takes over the project will first have to speak with the client.

Без обзира на то да ли...или... explicitly concedes both alternatives of a yes/no or either/or question:

Без обзира на то да ли ће жалба бити прихваћена или одбијена, добићете писано образложење.

Regardless of whether the appeal is accepted or rejected, you will receive a written explanation.

This structure is especially useful in legal, administrative, and academic prose because it makes the exhaustive alternatives explicit.

Mixed conditionals: one condition, another time

In a past-to-present mixed conditional, an unreal past choice explains a present state.

Да сам прихватила тај посао, сада бих живела у другом граду.

If I had accepted that job, I would be living in another city now. (female speaker)

The subordinate perfect сам прихватила locates the unreal cause in the past; сада forces a present reading for бих живела.

The reverse mixture uses a continuing present property to explain an unreal past outcome:

Да нисам толико тврдоглав, јуче бих признао да сам погрешио.

If I weren't so stubborn, I would have admitted yesterday that I was wrong. (male speaker)

Present нисам...тврдоглав describes an enduring trait; јуче locates the unreal consequence in the past. English marks the distinction partly through had and would have; Serbian relies more heavily on the perfect, the conditional, aspect, and time expressions.

❌ Да бих јуче прихватио понуду, данас бих радио у Новом Саду.

Incorrect for a counterfactual condition — да бих expresses a conditional form often used for purpose, not the required past condition да сам прихватио.

✅ Да сам јуче прихватио понуду, данас бих радио у Новом Саду.

If I had accepted the offer yesterday, I would be working in Novi Sad today. (male speaker)

Mixing concession with condition

A sentence can concede one circumstance while embedding a genuine condition in another clause.

Иако би нам било лакше да одложимо рок, наставићемо по првобитном плану.

Although it would be easier for us if we postponed the deadline, we will continue according to the original plan.

Иако concedes the hypothetical advantage било би лакше. Inside it, да одложимо supplies the condition under which that advantage would arise. The sentence does not mean that postponement has occurred.

Чак и ако добијемо дозволу, остаћемо код куће уколико се време нагло погорша.

Even if we receive permission, we'll stay home if the weather deteriorates suddenly.

The first clause removes permission as a sufficient guarantee; the second supplies the condition that still controls the decision.

A formal-literary passage

Иако су први резултати деловали охрабрујуће, истраживачи нису журили са закључком. Чак и ако се исти образац понови у већем узорку, налаз ће морати независно да се провери. А чак и да су сви почетни подаци били потпуни, без додатног поређења не бисмо знали да ли је промена трајна. Ма колико исход био привлачан, доказ не постаје јачи зато што га прижељкујемо.

Although the first results appeared encouraging, the researchers did not rush to a conclusion. Even if the same pattern recurs in a larger sample, the finding will have to be independently verified. And even if all the initial data had been complete, without an additional comparison we would not know whether the change was lasting. However attractive the outcome may be, evidence does not become stronger because we desire it. (academic/literary)

The passage moves from fact (иако) through an open future possibility (чак и ако) to a counterfactual past concession (чак и да су...били) and an exhaustive degree concession (ма колико). The sequence progressively strengthens the argument.

Common Mistakes

Treating a fact as an unreal condition

❌ Чак и да је јуче падала киша, утакмица је одиграна.

Wrong reality framing if the rain is known to have occurred — чак и да presents it as hypothetical.

✅ Иако је јуче падала киша, утакмица је одиграна.

Although it rained yesterday, the match was played.

Copying English Future I after ако

❌ Чак и ако ћемо завршити касно, послаћемо извештај вечерас.

Incorrect neutral conditional sequence — use present завршимо for the open future condition.

✅ Чак и ако завршимо касно, послаћемо извештај вечерас.

Even if we finish late, we'll send the report tonight.

Using иако and али as an automatic double pair

❌ Иако је понуда повољна, али је рок сувише кратак.

Redundant in neutral edited Serbian — иако already marks concession; do not automatically add али.

✅ Иако је понуда повољна, рок је сувише кратак.

Although the offer is favorable, the deadline is too short.

In conversation, resumptive али can occur after a long or interrupted concessive clause; that discourse use should not be turned into a blanket written pattern.

Losing the past condition in a mixed conditional

❌ Да прихватим посао прошле године, сада бих живела ближе породици.

Incorrect time framing — прошле године requires the counterfactual past да сам прихватила.

✅ Да сам прихватила посао прошле године, сада бих живела ближе породици.

If I had accepted the job last year, I would now live closer to my family. (female speaker)

Practice

1. Choose the reality frame

Fill with иако, чак и ако, or чак и да:

  1. The server actually failed, but no data were lost.
  2. The server may fail tonight, but the backup will remain available.
  3. Imagine the server failed completely; the archive would still be safe.

Possible answers: Иако је сервер отказао, ниједан податак није изгубљен. Чак и ако сервер ноћас откаже, резервна копија ће остати доступна. Чак и да сервер потпуно откаже, архива би и даље била безбедна.

2. Build two mixed conditionals

Express (a) a past decision with a present consequence and (b) a present personality trait with a past consequence. Underline the time expression that fixes the interpretation.

Key Takeaways

  • Иако/мада/премда concede a proposition presented as factual.
  • Чак и ако concedes an open possibility; чак и да presents a remote or counterfactual one.
  • Макар can concede an extreme scenario or cost, while particle макар can mean “at least.”
  • Mixed conditionals combine different time frames; Serbian uses the perfect, Conditional I, aspect, and adverbials to locate them.
  • A sentence may contain both concession and condition, but each clause keeps its own logical job.
