ležati / leći (to lie / lie down)

Serbian separates a position from the transition into that position. Imperfective лежати means “be lying” or “lie” as a state; perfective лећи means “lie down” and reach that position. They form an essential semantic contrast, but not a strict two-member aspect pair: the repeated/process counterpart of лећи is легати. English often leaves these boundaries implicit, so the safest approach is to learn each verb with its stem and case frame.

The chains лежати — лежим — лежао and лећи — легнем — легао must be learned rather than generated from one visible stem. Learn masculine легао together with feminine легла, since the masculine spelling does not transparently display the гл sequence visible before the feminine ending. Both imperative sets of лећи are standard: легни is structurally transparent from легнем, while лези is very common in present-day speech. Do not treat one as a regional misspelling of the other.

Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark pitch accent or vowel length, so the table gives the forms exactly as learners normally write them. The audible patterns belong to the accent-paradigm guide; the visible irregularity here is the alternation among лећ-, легн-, and лег-.

После ручка обично лежим двадесет минута, али ретко заспим.

After lunch I usually spend twenty minutes lying down, but I rarely fall asleep.

Синоћ сам легла рано јер ме је болела глава.

Last night I went to bed early because I had a headache. (female speaker)

A state versus entry into the state

Use лежати when the subject is already horizontal and that condition is the relevant scene. The subject may be a person, animal, or object. Use лећи for one bounded change from sitting or standing to lying down. For repeated entries into the position, standard Serbian uses imperfective легати, with present лежем, лежеш, леже, лежемо, лежете, лежу.

Пас лежи испод стола и чека да некоме испадне залогај.

The dog is lying under the table, waiting for someone to drop a bite of food.

Кад попијеш лек, лези и одмори се бар пола сата.

After you take the medicine, lie down and rest for at least half an hour.

Perfective present легнем does not normally describe an action unfolding now. It occurs naturally in future-oriented subordinate clauses and in sequences where each transition reaches its endpoint.

Чим легнем, сетим се још нечега што нисам урадио.

As soon as I lie down, I remember something else I haven't done. (male speaker)

Радним данима лежем пре поноћи, а петком обично останем будан дуже.

On weekdays I go to bed before midnight, but on Fridays I usually stay awake longer. (male speaker)

The imperfective can also denote a bounded stretch of time because aspect and duration are not opposites. Лежао сам два сата presents the two-hour interval as a state; легао сам у десет locates the transition at ten.

💡
Ask whether the sentence locates someone in a position or follows movement into it. That same contrast explains the case choice: static на каучу but directional на кауч.
💡
Keep three lemmas on one memory card: лежати — лежим “be lying,” легати — лежем “lie down repeatedly,” and лећи — легнем “lie down once.” Their similar-looking forms express different viewpoints.

Location with лежати, destination with лећи

A static location uses the case required by a location expression: commonly у/на + locative, код + genitive, or a spatial adverb. A destination reached by лећи commonly uses у/на + accusative.

StateTransition
лежати у креветулећи у кревет
лежати на каучулећи на кауч
лежати на подулећи на под

Док сам лежао на каучу, неко је позвонио на врата.

While I was lying on the sofa, someone rang the doorbell. (male speaker)

Дете је легло у кревет без уобичајеног негодовања.

The child got into bed without the usual complaining.

The English phrase go to bed often corresponds to лећи even though Serbian does not use a verb meaning “go” there. Отићи у кревет is possible when actual movement toward the bedroom matters, but лећи is the compact everyday verb for going to bed.

The location guide and directional accusative guide develop the case contrast beyond these verbs.

Complements: going to bed to do something

Everyday Serbian commonly follows лећи with да + present when the purpose is sleeping, reading, or resting. The infinitive is also standard, especially where a compact expression is preferred. Neither construction is universally wrong.

Легао сам да спавам, али су комшије почеле да буше зид.

I went to bed to sleep, but the neighbors started drilling into the wall. (male speaker)

После дежурства је само легла да се мало одмори.

After her shift, she just lay down to rest for a while.

The subject of да се одмори is understood as the same person who lay down. Serbian does not need an English-style in order to. See da versus the infinitive for the broader distribution.

Not reflexive, and not English lay

Ordinary лежати and лећи are intransitive and do not take се. The subject changes position; there is no direct object. To put an object down, use ставити or a more specific transitive verb. To lay a child in bed, for example, everyday Serbian may use ставити дете у кревет.

Стави торбу на клупу; не мора да лежи на мокром бетону.

Put the bag on the bench; it doesn't need to lie on the wet concrete.

English also uses lie for saying something untrue. Serbian does not: that verb is лагати, with present лажем. The sound resemblance between лежати and English lie is useful only for the physical position.

Књига већ недељу дана лежи на мом столу, а још је нисам отворио.

The book has been lying on my desk for a week, and I still haven't opened it. (male speaker)

Одлежати is a lexical perfective that means to spend a bounded period lying down or to serve a period, as in illness or prison. It is not the general perfective partner for every use of лежати. Прилегнути means to lie down briefly, often to rest, and carries its own nuance.

После операције је морао да одлежи још три дана у болници.

After the operation, he had to remain in the hospital for another three days.

Прилегла сам на пола сата и пробудила се тек увече.

I lay down for half an hour and didn't wake up until the evening. (female speaker)

These prefixes contribute lexical meanings; they do not simply toggle an aspect switch. The non-synonymous aspect-pair guide explains why an English dictionary gloss is not enough to predict them.

Micro-dialogue

„Зашто још лежиш?“ — „Нисам добро спавао.“ — „Онда лези још мало, ја ћу спремити доручак.“

‘Why are you still lying down?’ — ‘I didn't sleep well.’ — ‘Then lie down a little longer; I'll make breakfast.’ (male speaker in the second turn)

The question uses лежиш because the person is already in the state. The reply uses perfective imperative лези to propose entering that state again or deliberately settling into it.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the viewpoint and case

Complete four sentences with the correct form of лежати or лећи and the correct case: already on the sofa, movement onto the sofa, remaining in bed all morning, and going to bed at eleven. Explain both the aspect and the location/destination contrast.

Task 2: Rebuild the meaning

Translate: The keys are lying on the shelf; Lie down and rest; She went to bed early; I put the coat on the chair. Use лежати, лећи, and ставити only where their argument structure permits them.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сваке вечери легнем у кревету око једанаест.

Incorrect for the intended routine and incorrect case — repeated going to bed uses imperfective лежем, while direction requires accusative кревет.

✅ Сваке вечери лежем у кревет око једанаест.

Every evening I go to bed at about eleven.

❌ Уморан сам, па ћу се лећи после ручка.

Incorrect — ordinary лећи is not reflexive.

✅ Уморан сам, па ћу лећи после ручка.

I'm tired, so I'll lie down after lunch. (male speaker)

❌ Цео дан је легао на каучу и гледао серије.

Incorrect for an ongoing state — легао marks the transition into lying down, not the whole duration.

✅ Цео дан је лежао на каучу и гледао серије.

He lay on the sofa all day watching series.

❌ Кад легнеш у кревету, угаси светло.

Incorrect — movement into bed requires accusative кревет, not locative кревету.

✅ Кад легнеш у кревет, угаси светло.

When you get into bed, turn off the light.

❌ Немој да ми лежиш о томе где си био.

Incorrect lexical choice — physical лежати cannot mean ‘tell an untruth.’

✅ Немој да ме лажеш о томе где си био.

Don't lie to me about where you were. (male addressee)

Key Takeaways

  • Лежати — лежим profiles a state; лећи — легнем profiles one completed transition, while легати — лежем profiles repeated or unfolding entries into that state.
  • Static у кревету / на каучу contrasts with directional у кревет / на кауч.
  • Learn the irregular l-participles лежао and легао / легла, and recognize both standard imperative sets легни and лези.
  • Neither verb is ordinarily reflexive. Use ставити for putting an object down and лагати for telling an untruth.
