Serbian трчати presents running as an activity, process, or habit. Perfective потрчати does not simply mean “complete a run”: it marks the onset, “start running” or “break into a run.” For an attained destination or path, Serbian selects other prefixed verbs such as дотрчати, отрчати, утрчати, or претрчати. The English verb run therefore opens a lexical network rather than one tidy aspect pair.
Principal forms
| Form | трчати (imperfective) | потрчати (perfective, onset) |
|---|---|---|
| present | трчим, трчиш, трчи, трчимо, трчите, трче | потрчим, потрчиш, потрчи, потрчимо, потрчите, потрче |
| l-participle | трчао, трчала, трчало; трчали, трчале, трчала | потрчао, потрчала, потрчало; потрчали, потрчале, потрчала |
| imperative | трчи, трчимо, трчите | потрчи, потрчимо, потрчите |
| future, 1st singular | трчаћу | потрчаћу |
The present has -им endings and third-person plural трче. The masculine l-participles трчао, потрчао retain ч; missing the caron in Latin trčati would be a spelling error.
Трчим три пута недељно, обично пре доручка.
I run three times a week, usually before breakfast.
Кад је чуо да се врата затварају, потрчао је ка возу.
When he heard the doors closing, he started running toward the train.
Activity and process with трчати
Imperfective трчати is the unmarked choice for exercise, an action unfolding now, duration, and repeated running.
Не могу сада да разговарам; трчим узбрдо и једва дишем.
I can't talk now; I'm running uphill and can barely breathe.
Док су деца трчала по дворишту, ми смо припремали ручак.
While the children were running around the yard, we were preparing lunch.
English progressive am running and simple habitual run both map naturally to present трчим; time expressions determine the reading. A completed time span does not itself force perfective aspect:
Јуче сам трчала четрдесет минута без паузе.
Yesterday I ran for forty minutes without a break. (female speaker)
The duration profiles the activity from inside. It does not say that a path boundary was attained.
Потрчати marks the beginning
Prefix по- in потрчати creates an ingressive event: the subject changes from not running to running. The subsequent run may be brief or long; потрчати itself does not describe its endpoint.
Пас је угледао власницу и одмах потрчао према њој.
The dog saw its owner and immediately started running toward her.
Потрчаћемо чим се упали зелено светло.
We'll start running as soon as the light turns green.
Because потрчати is perfective, independent present потрчим does not normally describe an onset happening right now. It appears naturally after кад, чим, ако for a future boundary or in habitual sequences: Кад чујем пиштаљку, потрчим “When I hear the whistle, I start running.”
Destination, route, and measure
Unprefixed трчати is normally intransitive, but it combines freely with directional and measure expressions.
| Frame | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| до + genitive | as far as a goal | до станице |
| ка/према + dative | toward, arrival not asserted | ка излазу, према мосту |
| кроз + accusative | through an area | кроз парк |
| по + locative | around/over an area | по стази |
| за + instrumental | after/in pursuit of | за аутобусом |
| bare measure | distance or race | пет километара, маратон |
Сваког дана трчи кроз парк до старог моста и назад.
Every day she runs through the park to the old bridge and back.
Трчао сам за аутобусом, али је кренуо пре него што сам стигао.
I ran after the bus, but it left before I arrived. (male speaker)
Ове године први пут трчимо полумаратон.
This year we're running a half marathon for the first time.
Accusative полумаратон names the race or bounded measure; it does not turn трчати into an ordinary transitive verb with an affected object.
Different prefixes select different running paths
| Perfective | Core boundary | Typical complement |
|---|---|---|
| дотрчати | arrive running | до капије / некоме |
| отрчати | run away/off or run to complete an errand | у продавницу |
| утрчати | run in | у кућу |
| истрчати | run out | из зграде |
| претрчати | run across | улицу |
| протрчати | run through or past | кроз ходник / поред нас |
| притрчати | run up to | детету |
Мина је дотрчала до капије и предала ми заборављени кључ.
Mina ran up to the gate and handed me the forgotten key.
Немој да претрчиш улицу док се не упали зелено светло.
Don't run across the street until the light turns green.
Дечак је истрчао из продавнице и утрчао у двориште суседне куће.
The boy ran out of the shop and into the yard of the neighboring house.
These verbs retain manner while adding a specific boundary. Дотрчати is not interchangeable with onset потрчати: the first asserts arrival, the second only the start. Their repeated/process counterparts include дотрчавати, истрчавати, утрчавати, and претрчавати. The directional-motion overview maps the same paths across other manners of motion.
No ordinary reflexive се
Personal трчати is not reflexive: трчим, трчала је, трчаћемо. To mean race one another, Serbian uses the separate verb тркати се, not трчати се.
An impersonal dative construction трчи ми се means “I feel like running.” Here the verb stays third-person singular and ми marks the experiencer.
Данас ми се не трчи по киши, па ћу вежбати код куће.
I don't feel like running in the rain today, so I'll exercise at home.
Близанци се стално тркају до улазних врата.
The twins are constantly racing each other to the front door.
The first се is impersonal; the second belongs to lexical тркати се.
Commands and aspect
Imperfective трчи/трчите directs the activity or manner. Perfective потрчи tells someone to begin running; a path-perfective imperative requests a completed path.
Трчи спорије на почетку, да сачуваш снагу за последњи километар.
Run more slowly at the beginning so you save energy for the final kilometer. (informal)
Кад чујеш знак, потрчи према плавој застави.
When you hear the signal, start running toward the blue flag. (informal)
Negative не трчи is the normal prohibition against the activity: Не трчи по мокрим плочицама.
Figurative uses
Трчати за + instrumental extends from physical pursuit to chasing status, money, or approval. The meaning can be critical, so context and tone matter.
Не желим више да трчим за туђим одобравањем.
I don't want to keep chasing other people's approval.
Idiom трчати пред руду means act prematurely or get ahead of events. It is common (informal/idiomatic) language.
Немој да трчиш пред руду; још нисмо добили званичну понуду.
Don't jump the gun; we haven't received an official offer yet. (informal, idiomatic)
Micro-dialogue
„Зашто журиш ка станици?“ — „Касним на последњи воз.“ — „Потрчи преко паркинга; тамо је краћи пут.“ — „Нећу, клизаво је. Трчаћу тротоаром.“
‘Why are you hurrying toward the station?’ — ‘I'm late for the last train.’ — ‘Start running across the car park; it's shorter that way.’ — ‘I won't; it's slippery. I'll run along the pavement.’
The dialogue moves from hurried motion to onset потрчи and future activity трчаћу.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Activity, onset, or arrival?
Translate: I run every morning; she suddenly started running; he arrived at the gate running. Choose трчати, потрчати, and дотрчати, then state which boundary each sentence does or does not assert.
Task 2: Build the route
Describe a runner going through a park, toward a bridge, across a street, and five kilometers in total. Use кроз + accusative, ка + dative, perfective претрчати, and a bare distance measure.
Common Mistakes
❌ Јуче сам трчио пет километара.
Incorrect l-participle — the masculine form is трчао, not трчио.
✅ Јуче сам трчао пет километара.
Yesterday I ran five kilometers. (male speaker)
❌ Управо потрчим ка излазу.
Incorrect for running in progress now — perfective потрчим marks an onset boundary.
✅ Управо трчим ка излазу.
I'm running toward the exit right now.
❌ Трчим за аутобус.
Incorrect case in the pursuit frame — за governs instrumental аутобусом.
✅ Трчим за аутобусом јер је последњи вечерас.
I'm running after the bus because it's the last one tonight.
❌ Деца се трче до ограде.
Incorrect — personal трчати has no reflexive се; reciprocal racing is тркати се.
✅ Деца се тркају до ограде.
The children are racing each other to the fence.
❌ Дотрчао је до куће, али још није стигао.
Incorrect aspectual logic — дотрчао до куће asserts arrival and conflicts with ‘has not arrived yet.’
✅ Трчао је ка кући, али још није стигао.
He was running toward the house but had not arrived yet.
Key Takeaways
- Трчати presents running as an activity, process, habit, or duration.
- Потрчати means begin running or break into a run; it is not a neutral perfective for the whole activity.
- Path verbs such as дотрчати, отрчати, утрчати, истрчати, and претрчати select distinct boundaries.
- Personal трчати has no се; трчи ми се is impersonal, and тркати се means race.
- Learn route frames and measure phrases together with the verb rather than translating every English to, through, or after mechanically.
