leteti (to fly)

Serbian летети means move through the air or travel by air. It works for birds, aircraft, objects, and passengers describing an air journey. The unprefixed verb is imperfective; Serbian then chooses among path-specific perfectives such as полетети “take off,” слетети “land,” долетети “arrive flying,” and одлетети “fly away.” There is no single prefix that merely turns fly into a neutral completed event.

Principal forms

Formлетети (imperfective)
presentлетим, летиш, лети, летимо, летите, лете
l-participleлетео, летела, летело; летели, летеле, летела
imperativeлети, летимо, летите
future, 1st singularлетећу

The third-person plural is лете, and the Ekavian masculine l-participle is летео. Standard Ijekavian Serbian has летјети, летио/летјела. This page keeps the Ekavian forms consistent.

Изнад језера лети велико јато дивљих гусака.

A large flock of wild geese is flying over the lake.

Прошлог лета смо први пут летели преко Атлантика.

Last summer we flew across the Atlantic for the first time.

Living things, aircraft, and passengers

With a bird or aircraft as subject, летети names the physical motion. A human subject can use the same verb for traveling on a flight; Serbian does not need a reflexive form.

Наш авион лети на висини од десет хиљада метара.

Our plane is flying at an altitude of ten thousand meters.

Сутра летим у Беч, а враћам се возом преко Будимпеште.

Tomorrow I'm flying to Vienna, and I'm returning by train via Budapest.

For the general means of travel, ићи авионом is also natural: У Беч идем авионом. Летим у Беч foregrounds the air journey or flight booking; идем авионом fits the flight into a broader travel plan.

Ordinary летети is intransitive. The aircraft or traveler is the subject, not a direct object of the verb.

Ова авио-компанија лети за Рим четири пута недељно.

This airline flies to Rome four times a week.

Here the company is understood through its scheduled service. In neutral transport language, превозити путнике expresses carrying passengers as direct objects.

Source, destination, route, and open direction

Air travel uses the same spatial cases as other motion:

ка + dativedirection toward, arrival not assertedка обали
изнад + genitiveposition/route aboveизнад облака

Летимо из Београда у Париз, али због ветра заобилазимо Алпе.

We're flying from Belgrade to Paris, but because of the wind we're going around the Alps.

Хеликоптер је летео ка обали, али још није стигао до луке.

The helicopter was flying toward the coast but had not yet reached the harbor.

Ка обали gives orientation only; it does not entail arrival. This contrasts with perfective долетети, which packages reaching the relevant goal.

Авион је полетео са закашњењем, али је слетео на време.

The plane took off late but landed on time.

Ласте долећу у овај крај сваког пролећа.

Swallows arrive in this area every spring.

Мали авион је прелетео планину пре него што су се облаци спустили.

The small plane flew across the mountain before the clouds descended.

Perfective прелетео treats the mountain as a bounded path and can take it directly in the accusative. Imperfective летети more often combines with a route phrase such as летети преко планине. Prefix, aspect, and complement work together.

The imperfectives in the right column describe repeated or unfolding versions of the same path. Авиони слећу can mean planes are landing now or land regularly; авион је слетео reports one completed landing.

Док смо чекали свој лет, авиони су непрестано слетали и полетали.

While we were waiting for our flight, planes were landing and taking off continuously.

The aspect-and-motion synthesis explains why these are derivational families rather than tense forms.

💡
Do not ask for “the perfective of летети” without naming the boundary. Beginning, arriving, landing, departing, and crossing require different verbs.

No ordinary се, but an impersonal possibility

Standard летети is not reflexive: Птица лети, авион лети, сутра летим. Летети се is not the ordinary infinitive.

An impersonal dative-experiencer pattern such as лети ми се can mean “I feel like flying/traveling by air.” It is structurally parallel to иде ми се and is most natural when the desire itself is being emphasized.

После две године без одмора, баш ми се лети негде где је топло.

After two years without a holiday, I really feel like flying somewhere warm.

The verb remains third-person singular лети; dative ми is the experiencer. This се does not belong to personal летети.

Clitics and participant structure

Because летети is intransitive, a passenger is not an accusative object of the verb. Object clitics in a sentence normally belong to another predicate.

Авио-компанија нас превози до Франкфурта, а одатле летимо другим авионом.

The airline transports us to Frankfurt, and from there we fly on another plane.

Accusative нас belongs to transitive превози. In the second clause, ми is the subject ending inside летимо, not a clitic.

Figurative uses and register

Време лети is the ordinary, register-neutral expression “time flies.”

Време лети кад радимо нешто што нас заиста занима.

Time flies when we're doing something that genuinely interests us.

For extremely fast movement, Serbian can extend летети metaphorically: Ауто је летео низ улицу. This is (informal/figurative) and implies dangerous speed, not literal flight.

Не знам ко је возио, али ауто је летео низ улицу.

I don't know who was driving, but the car was flying down the street. (informal, figurative)

Commands

Imperative лети/летите is literal when addressing a pilot or, imaginatively, a bird or flying device. In professional aviation, exact procedural vocabulary replaces vague everyday commands.

Лети ниже и држи се западно од реке док не прође олуја.

Fly lower and stay west of the river until the storm passes. (informal singular instruction)

For one departure boundary, use полети; for landing, слети.

Не слећи док ти контрола лета не потврди да је писта слободна.

Do not land until air traffic control confirms that the runway is clear.

Micro-dialogue

„Кад летиш за Лисабон?“ — „У петак ујутру. Полећемо у седам, а слећемо око десет по локалном времену.“ — „Летиш директно?“ — „Не, преседам у Цириху.“

‘When are you flying to Lisbon?’ — ‘On Friday morning. We take off at seven and land around ten local time.’ — ‘Are you flying direct?’ — ‘No, I change planes in Zurich.’

Scheduled future is naturally expressed by imperfective present летиш, полећемо, слећемо when the timetable is clear.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Name the boundary

Describe a flight that takes off, flies over the sea, lands, and later departs again. Choose полетети, летети, слетети, and одлетети, then explain which boundary each prefix contributes.

Task 2: Build a route

Translate: Tomorrow we are flying from Belgrade to Vienna; the plane is now flying toward the airport; it has not landed yet. Use из + genitive, у + accusative, ка + dative, and keep the uncompleted approach imperfective.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сутра се летим у Берлин.

Incorrect — personal летети is not reflexive.

✅ Сутра летим у Берлин.

Tomorrow I'm flying to Berlin.

❌ Авион је долетео ка Београду, али још није стигао.

Incorrect aspectual logic — долетео asserts arrival, which conflicts with ‘has not arrived yet.’

✅ Авион лети ка Нишу, али је још далеко од аеродрома.

The plane is flying toward Niš but is still far from the airport.

❌ Авион сада полети са писте.

Incorrect for a takeoff unfolding now — perfective полети presents the onset boundary.

✅ Авион управо полеће са писте.

The plane is taking off from the runway right now.

❌ Авио-компанија нас лети до Атине.

Incorrect participant frame — passengers are not direct objects of летети; use превозити or say that they fly.

✅ Ова авио-компанија нас превози до Атине директним летом.

This airline transports us to Athens on a direct flight.

❌ Авион је полетео из Београда и слетио у Подгорицу.

Incorrect mixing — полетео is Ekavian but слетио is Ijekavian; keep one reflex throughout.

✅ Авион је полетео из Београда и слетео у Подгорицу.

The plane took off from Belgrade and landed in Podgorica. (consistent Ekavian)

Key Takeaways

  • Memorize летети — летим — лете — летео/летела — лети — летећу.
  • Human subjects can say летим у Беч; ordinary personal летети has no reflexive се.
  • Sources, destinations, and routes use normal spatial cases; ка + dative gives direction without guaranteed arrival.
  • Полетети, слетети, долетети, одлетети, прелетети, and пролетети encode distinct path boundaries.
  • Unprefixed летети has no single neutral perfective; choose the event you actually mean.
