Some Serbian aspectual partners cannot be predicted by attaching a productive prefix or suffix. Their stems may differ radically—говорити — рећи, долазити — доћи—or preserve only enough resemblance to help after the pair has been learned—узимати — узети, почињати — почети.
These are lexical sets, not a conjugation rule. Learn both infinitives together with their principal forms, government, and the contexts in which they truly describe the same event. This page deliberately excludes genuinely biaspectual verbs, where one verb serves both viewpoints; those belong on Biaspectual Verbs.
High-Frequency Lexical Pairs
| Imperfective set | Perfective set | Shared event and government |
|---|---|---|
| почињати — почињем — почињао/почињала | почети — почнем — почео/почела | begin something or begin to act |
The table supplies forms that the infinitive does not reliably predict: рећи has present кажем and past рекао; отићи has present одем and past отишао. Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark pitch accent or vowel length, so none is added here.
Holding the Event Constant
An aspectual comparison is valid only when both verbs describe the same lexical situation. The imperfective views its internal course, recurrence, or open-ended activity; the perfective presents one bounded occurrence or attained result.
Док сам узимала документа са стола, зазвонио ми је телефон.
While I was taking the documents from the table, my phone rang. (female speaker)
Узела сам документа са стола и ставила их у торбу.
I took the documents from the table and put them in my bag. (female speaker)
Both sentences concern the same act of taking. Узимала opens its internal phase as background; узела presents the transfer as complete.
Сваког јутра ставља кључеве у исту фиоку.
Every morning he puts the keys in the same drawer.
Ставила је кључеве у фиоку и закључала стан.
She put the keys in the drawer and locked the apartment.
Imperfective ставља supports a repeated routine. Perfective ставила advances a past sequence with one completed placement.
Motion pairs behave the same way, although their stems are far apart:
Гости су долазили током целог поподнева.
Guests kept arriving throughout the afternoon.
Последњи гости су дошли нешто после осам.
The last guests arrived shortly after eight.
The first sentence distributes arrivals over an interval. The second locates one bounded arrival.
One English Gloss Does Not Prove Pairhood
Similar translations can hide different Serbian events. Говорити and рећи form a useful lexical opposition only when both concern producing an utterance. Говорити also means speak a language or talk at length; рећи cannot replace it in those uses.
Милица говори мађарски и српски.
Milica speaks Hungarian and Serbian.
Милица је рекла да ће каснити десет минута.
Milica said that she would be ten minutes late.
These two sentences do not form an aspectual contrast. Speaking a language and making one statement are different lexical situations.
Even within one conversation, viewpoint must be held constant:
Говорио ми је о проблему скоро сат времена.
He talked to me about the problem for almost an hour.
Рекао ми је у чему је проблем и предложио решење.
He told me what the problem was and proposed a solution.
The second sentence presents a bounded communication with content. The first foregrounds extended speech. They are related, but рећи is not simply finished говорити in every context.
Reflexive Forms May Create a Different Lexeme
Do not strip or add се while declaring two verbs an aspectual pair. Налазити нешто — наћи нешто can contrast repeated/processual finding with one successful find. By contrast, налазити се commonly means be located, while наћи се can mean find oneself, end up, or meet.
Често налазим корисне белешке у старим свескама.
I often find useful notes in old notebooks.
Јутрос сам нашао важан рачун међу папирима.
This morning I found an important bill among the papers. (male speaker)
Архив се налази на другом спрату.
The archive is located on the second floor.
The location meaning of налазити се has no neutral completed counterpart meaning finish being located. Similar shape does not guarantee the same lexical event.
How to Verify a Difficult Pair
Use a reproducible four-step check:
- Consult a dictionary that marks aspect and lists an explicit partner where available.
- Compare government: do both verbs take the same object, case, preposition, or clause type?
- Build two sentences about one event, changing only viewpoint. If the participants or result change, you may have related verbs rather than a pair.
- Check more than one reference when dictionaries disagree. Lexicographers sometimes analyze borderline networks differently, especially where a prefix has developed its own lexical meaning.
For example, почињати/почети preserve the same beginning event and complement:
Предавање обично почиње у девет.
The lecture usually begins at nine.
Предавање је почело тачно у девет.
The lecture began at exactly nine.
Both verbs can also take да + present or an infinitive when subjects are shared, with distribution shaped by style and usage:
Почела је да чита резултате наглас.
She began reading the results aloud.
Почела је читати резултате наглас.
She began reading the results aloud.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Supply the Principal Sets
Give the present and l-participle for both members of two pairs.
Узимати — узимам — узимао/узимала; узети — узмем — узео/узела. Долазити — долазим — долазио/долазила; доћи — дођем — дошао/дошла.
To take—present and past sets; to come—present and past sets. Answer: the two members must be learned as separate principal forms.
Task 2: Test Pairhood
Decide whether the two clauses hold the lexical event constant.
Сретао сам је на станици сваког петка. — Срео сам је на станици прошлог петка.
I used to meet her at the station every Friday. — I met her at the station last Friday. Answer: yes; recurrence contrasts with one bounded meeting. (male speaker)
Common Mistakes
Inventing a form from the infinitive
❌ Јуче сам рећио колеги истину.
Incorrect—the masculine l-participle is рекао; рећио is an invented form.
✅ Јуче сам рекао колеги истину.
Yesterday I told my colleague the truth. (male speaker)
Treating рећи as the completed form of every говорити use
❌ Она је рекла француски веома добро.
Incorrect—speaking a language requires говорити; рећи names an utterance, not general language ability.
✅ Она говори француски веома добро.
She speaks French very well.
Confusing a reflexive lexeme with a neutral aspectual partner
❌ „Музеј се нашао у центру“ значи да је музеј завршио радњу налажења.
Incorrect analysis—наћи се here does not mean ‘finish being located.’
✅ Музеј се налази у центру.
The museum is located downtown.
Assuming every similar translation identifies a pair
❌ Ићи и доћи су аспектуални пар јер оба описују кретање.
Incorrect—ићи profiles a journey, while доћи profiles arrival; shared semantic territory does not make them a neutral pair.
✅ Долазити и доћи могу чинити аспектуални пар кад оба значе долазак.
Dolaziti and doći can form an aspectual pair when both mean arrival.
Key Takeaways
- Nonproductive pairs must be memorized as principal-form and government sets.
- Hold the lexical event constant before interpreting the difference as aspect.
- Similar English glosses, similar stems, or a shared semantic field do not prove pairhood.
- Reflexive се may create a separate lexeme with no neutral aspectual twin.
- Biaspectual verbs use one form for both viewpoints and belong to a different analysis.
