Locative: 'About' and Other Uses

The locative does more than locate something in or on a place. With о, it marks the topic of speech and thought; with по, it can present an area, a guiding standard, or an event after which something happens; and with при, it appears in formal institutional phrases and several compact expressions of circumstance. These uses are not freely interchangeable: the preposition and the intended relationship determine the meaning together.

For the endings themselves, review locative forms. The forms below are ordinary contemporary Serbian; usages that are restricted to formal writing are labeled explicitly.

О + Locative: The Topic of Attention

Use о + locative when a person speaks, writes, thinks, worries, learns, or asks about a topic. The topic is treated as the object around which the mental or communicative activity is organized. English uses about or sometimes on; Serbian keeps the preposition о but declines the entire noun phrase.

Gender/numberNominative phraseо + locative
masculine singularнови законо новом закону
feminine singularзанимљива књигао занимљивој књизи
neuter singularважно питањео важном питању
pluralбудући плановио будућим плановима

После вечере смо дуго разговарали о новом стану.

After dinner, we talked for a long time about the new apartment.

Још размишљам о ономе што си ми јуче рекао.

I am still thinking about what you told me yesterday.

Новинарка пише о променама у школству.

The journalist is writing about changes in education.

Common verbs and expressions include говорити о, разговарати о, писати о, читати о, размишљати о, расправљати о, бринути о, and водити рачуна о. Their English translations are not always literal: бринути о деци may mean “take care of the children” as well as “worry about the children,” depending on context.

Док смо на путу, комшиница ће бринути о нашој мачки.

While we are away, the neighbor will take care of our cat.

💡
Learn a governing verb together with its preposition and case: размишљати о проблему, not merely размишљати. English think about, discuss, and take care of look different, but Serbian places their topic or object in о + locative constructions where the verb licenses one.

О Is Not Always Followed by the Locative

The preposition о also takes the accusative in a different physical meaning: contact or collision against something. Topic о therefore cannot be identified by the preposition alone; the meaning and case form work as a pair.

Разговарали смо о високом прагу на улазу.

We talked about the high threshold at the entrance. (topic: locative pragu)

Спотакао сам се о високи праг на улазу.

I tripped over the high threshold at the entrance. (physical contact: accusative prag)

With a neuter noun, the case contrast may be hidden because nominative and accusative are identical, while the locative has -у:

Мајстори су разговарали о старом огледалу, а онда су мердевине удариле о огледало.

The workers talked about the old mirror, and then the ladder struck the mirror.

The first phrase has locative о старом огледалу “about the old mirror”; the second has accusative о огледало “against the mirror.”

По + Locative: Across an Area

With a place in the locative, по commonly presents that place as an area across which an activity is distributed. It answers not simply “where at rest?” but “throughout what area?” or “in various parts of what area?” English may use around, through, across, or no explicit equivalent.

Цело поподне смо шетали по старом делу града.

We walked around the old part of town all afternoon.

Тражила је уговор по свим фиокама, али га није нашла.

She looked for the contract in every drawer, but she did not find it.

Compare у парку “in the park,” which merely locates the event, with по парку “around/throughout the park,” which highlights movement or distribution within it. Serbian also uses bare instrumental for certain path expressions, but that is a separate construction.

💡
Do not reduce по + locative to “movement.” It describes distribution within a domain, so it is also natural with stationary or repeated events: по зидовима су висиле фотографије “photographs hung all over the walls.”

По + Locative: According to a Standard

Another productive use means “according to,” “in accordance with,” or “following” a model. The noun names the standard by which something is identified, organized, or carried out.

Супу сам скувала по бакином рецепту.

I made the soup according to my grandmother's recipe.

По закону, послодавац мора да чува ту документацију.

Under the law, the employer must keep that documentation.

Књиге су поређане по презимену аутора.

The books are arranged by the author's surname.

This use is common in every register. The exact English preposition changes with the noun: по плану “according to plan,” по реду “in order,” по величини “by size,” по правилу “as a rule.” The Serbian case relationship remains the same.

По + Locative: After an Event

In formal and written Serbian, по + locative can mean “after” an event, especially with verbal nouns: по доласку “upon arrival,” по завршетку “after completion,” по повратку “on returning.” Everyday conversation often prefers после + genitive, but the по construction is fully standard and concise.

По доласку у хотел пријавите се на рецепцији.

Upon arriving at the hotel, check in at reception. (formal)

По завршетку седнице биће објављено саопштење.

A statement will be issued after the meeting ends. (formal)

The locative noun identifies the completed event that provides the time boundary. This is not the same as по + accusative meaning “to fetch” or “in pursuit of”: отићи по хлеб, послати некога по лекара.

По ручку ћу отићи по лекове.

After lunch, I will go and get the medicine.

Here по ручку is locative and temporal; по лекове is accusative plural and expresses the purpose of fetching something. For the broader pattern, see two-case prepositions.

При + Locative

The preposition при always governs the locative in contemporary Serbian, but its uses are more restricted than English at. It often marks institutional affiliation in formal language:

Лабораторија ради при Медицинском факултету у Београду.

The laboratory operates within the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade. (formal)

It can also mean “under conditions of” or “with” in technical, administrative, and academic prose:

При великој брзини зауставни пут је знатно дужи.

At high speed, the stopping distance is considerably longer. (formal/technical)

Several fixed expressions are common beyond formal prose. Имати при руци means “have within reach,” while при томе means “in doing so,” “at the same time,” or “besides that,” depending on the sentence.

Држи пасош при руци јер ће га тражити на улазу.

Keep your passport handy because they will ask for it at the entrance.

Прихватио је додатни посао, а при томе није одустао од студија.

He took on extra work and, at the same time, did not give up his studies.

Do not use при as a general translation of English at: “at school” is у школи, “at work” is на послу, and “at the station” is на станици.

Agreement and Hidden Case Forms

Every agreeing word inside the phrase must be locative: о мом новом послу, по овој важној одлуци, при таквим условима. The noun alone may not reveal the case. In о жени, for example, the ending is visibly locative; in plural о женама, the same form could also be dative or instrumental. The preposition and meaning identify the case.

О тим старим фотографијама знамо врло мало.

We know very little about those old photographs.

При оваквим временским условима лет може бити отказан.

Under weather conditions like these, the flight may be canceled. (formal)

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the case and complete the phrase

Supply the correct form of the phrase in parentheses.

  1. Дуго смо разговарали о _ (њихов нови пројекат).
  2. Документе смо разврстали по _ (датум).
  3. По _ (повратак) са пута позваћу те.
  4. При _ (ниска температура) батерија се брже празни.

Answers: о њиховом новом пројекту; по датуму; по повратку; при ниској температури.

Task 2: Explain the two uses of по

Identify the case and meaning of each по phrase.

После посла је отишла по децу, па је с њима прошетала по парку.

After work, she went to pick up the children and then walked around the park with them.

Answer: по децу is accusative and expresses fetching; по парку is locative and presents the park as the area through which they walked.

Common Mistakes

Leaving the topic noun in its dictionary form

❌ Разговарали смо о нови уговор.

Incorrect — о meaning ‘about’ requires the locative throughout the phrase.

✅ Разговарали смо о новом уговору.

We talked about the new contract.

Using the locative after по when something is fetched

❌ Идем по хлебу пре него што се продавница затвори.

Incorrect for ‘I am going to get bread’ — fetching requires по + accusative.

✅ Идем по хлеб пре него што се продавница затвори.

I am going to get bread before the store closes.

Using the accusative for movement within an area

❌ Цео сат смо шетали по град.

Incorrect — movement around an area requires по + locative.

✅ Цео сат смо шетали по граду.

We walked around town for an hour.

Treating при as a general word for “at”

❌ Деца су сада при школи.

Incorrect — ordinary location inside the school is expressed with у + locative.

✅ Деца су сада у школи.

The children are at school now.

Declining only the noun

❌ Пишу о ова важна одлука.

Incorrect — the demonstrative, adjective, and noun must all be locative.

✅ Пишу о овој важној одлуци.

They are writing about this important decision.

Key Takeaways

  • о + locative marks a topic: говорити о проблему.
  • по + locative can mark distribution across an area, a guiding standard, or—in formal prose—an event after which something happens.
  • по + accusative has other meanings, notably fetching: ићи по хлеб.
  • при + locative is restricted to institutional, circumstantial, and fixed expressions; it is not a general equivalent of English at.
  • Case, preposition, agreement, and meaning must be read together, especially where noun endings are syncretic.
