Diminutives and Augmentatives

Serbian diminutives can describe small size, but they also express affection, informality, sympathy, or a deliberately softened request. Augmentatives can express great size or intensity, yet many also convey admiration, annoyance, or contempt. Кућица may be a physically small house or a charming one; кућетина suggests an exceptionally large house and often carries the speaker's attitude.

The suffix creates a new noun, not merely a stylistic ending. That new noun has its own gender, stem, plural, and case forms. Unless labeled otherwise, the forms here belong to neutral contemporary Serbian; highly expressive augmentatives are marked (informal/expressive).

For a broader inventory of derivational suffixes, see Diminutives and Augmentatives in Word Formation. This page concentrates on how the derived nouns behave inside the noun system.

Productive Diminutive Patterns

Several suffixes recur, but suffix choice is partly lexical and often reshapes the stem.

Base nounDiminutiveTypical patternMeaning
градградићmasculine -ићsmall town
кључкључићmasculine -ићsmall key
прозорпрозорчићmasculine -чићsmall window
кућакућицаfeminine -ицаsmall/charming house
књигакњижицаfeminine -ица plus stem changebooklet/small book
селоселцеneuter -цеsmall village
писмописамцеneuter -це with expanded stemshort/little letter

На крају улице стоји мала кућица с плавим капцима.

At the end of the street there is a little house with blue shutters.

Резервни кључић сам оставио у горњој фиоци.

I left the little spare key in the top drawer.

Из купатила се види само уски прозорчић.

Only a narrow little window can be seen from the bathroom.

The alternations are real parts of the derived word: књига — књижица has г → ж, while сто — сточић contains ч. There is no dependable rule that lets learners attach one universal “little” ending to every noun. Store common bases and derivatives as a family.

💡
Learn a derived noun with gender and plural: градић, masculine, градићи; кућица, feminine, кућице; селце, neuter, селца. The suffix is only the first step.

Size, Affection, and Softening

A diminutive may refer to literal size, especially with concrete objects. In conversation it can instead make an offer or shared activity sound warmer: кафица is often not a smaller quantity of coffee but coffee treated as a pleasant social occasion (informal); пивце can work similarly (informal).

Хоћемо ли после посла на кафицу?

Shall we go for a coffee after work?

Написао јој је кратко писамце из болнице.

He wrote her a short little letter from the hospital.

With people and animals, diminutives often express tenderness: пас — псић, дете — детенце. Context can also make the same form patronizing or sarcastic. Calling a serious published work књижица may neutrally mean “booklet,” but it can diminish its importance if size is not genuinely at issue.

Псић се сакрио испод клупе кад је почела грмљавина.

The little dog hid under the bench when the thunder started.

Augmentatives and Their Attitude

Common expressive formations include -етина, -урина, -ерина and related suffixes. They are less predictable than the core diminutives and are usually best learned as complete words.

BaseAugmentativeTypical force
кућакућетинаhuge house, often unwieldy or unattractive
књигакњижуринаhuge, heavy book
рукаручердаvery large hand, often rough-sounding
будалабудалетинаcomplete fool; insulting

These forms are (informal/expressive), and будалетина is an insult. Size and evaluation are independent dimensions: књижурина can express annoyance at a heavy book, while an augmentative used about an impressive person can convey admiration. Do not translate every form mechanically with English “big.”

Донела је књижурину од осам стотина страна на плажу.

She brought an enormous eight-hundred-page book to the beach.

На плацу су подигли кућетину која заклања цео поглед.

They built a huge house on the lot that blocks the entire view.

💡
Augmentatives are normally stylistically marked, but the strength and direction of the evaluation depend on the word and context. Before using one about a person, ask whether the context clearly supports admiration; otherwise it can sound mocking or insulting.

Gender and Declension Can Shift

A transparent diminutive normally follows the gender expected from its ending: градић and псић are masculine, кућица and књижица feminine, селце and писамце neuter. Augmentative derivation may place the new noun in a different declension class from its base. Therefore, agreement must follow the derived noun actually used, not the original base.

FormGender/animacyNominative singularAccusative singularNominative plural
градићmasculine inanimateовај лепи градићовај лепи градићови лепи градићи
псићmasculine animateовај мали псићовог малог псићаови мали псићи
кућицаfeminineова мала кућицаову малу кућицуове мале кућице
селцеneuterово мирно селцеово мирно селцеова мирна селца

The animate contrast remains active after derivation: видим градић but видим псића. The suffix does not cancel case grammar.

На мапи смо нашли градић који вреди посетити.

On the map we found a small town worth visiting.

Ветеринар је прегледао уплашеног псића.

The veterinarian examined the frightened little dog.

A Mini-Paradigm: псић and кућица

Caseпсић, singularпсић, pluralкућица, singularкућица, plural
Nominativeпсићпсићикућицакућице
Genitiveпсићапсићакућицекућица
Dativeпсићупсићимакућицикућицама
Accusativeпсићапсићекућицукућице
Instrumentalпсићемпсићимакућицомкућицама
Locativeпсићупсићимакућицикућицама

Notice the networks: псића is genitive singular and animate accusative singular; кућице is genitive singular and nominative/accusative plural. The governing word and agreement reveal the case.

Пришли смо кућици испред које је власник шетао псића.

We approached the little house in front of which the owner was walking a little dog.

Here кућици is dative after прићи, while псића is the animate accusative object of шетати. English word order does not supply those Serbian forms.

Lexicalized Forms

Some words containing a historically diminutive-looking suffix have become independent vocabulary. Столица means “chair,” not productively “little table”; колица is a plural-form noun meaning a cart or stroller; пилић ordinarily means a chick. Analyze the current word, not an imagined base, and learn its gender and paradigm independently.

Оставите дечја колица поред лифта.

Leave the stroller beside the elevator.

Practice Task 1: Choose the Nuance

Decide whether the highlighted derivative primarily signals literal size, affection/social warmth, or an expressive negative evaluation. Then compare with the answer.

После ручка смо попили кафицу на тераси.

After lunch we had a coffee on the terrace. Answer: social warmth/informality, not necessarily a small serving.

Уместо приручника послали су ми нечитљиву књижурину.

Instead of a handbook they sent me an unreadable tome. Answer: large size plus negative evaluation.

Practice Task 2: Supply the Case Form

Change the citation noun in parentheses to the form required by the sentence. Answers are shown in the complete sentences.

Деца су пришла уплашеном псићу.

The children approached the frightened little dog. Answer for псић: dative singular псићу.

Кроз прозорчић се видело светло из кухиње.

Light from the kitchen could be seen through the little window. Answer for прозорчић: accusative singular after кроз, identical here to nominative.

Common Mistakes

1. Attaching one diminutive suffix mechanically to every base.

❌ У близини се налази један леп градчић.

Incorrect word formation — the established diminutive of град is градић, not a mechanical *градчић.

✅ У близини се налази један леп градић.

There is a pretty little town nearby.

2. Ignoring animacy in a masculine diminutive.

❌ Комшиница је удомила мали псић.

Incorrect — animate masculine псић needs accusative малог псића.

✅ Комшиница је удомила малог псића.

The neighbor adopted a little dog.

3. Keeping the base noun's case ending.

❌ Причали смо о старој кућица поред реке.

Incorrect — the derived feminine noun needs locative кућици, with matching adjective старој.

✅ Причали смо о старој кућици поред реке.

We talked about the old little house by the river.

4. Using an augmentative as a neutral synonym.

❌ У формалном каталогу сваки велики роман називам књижурином.

Incorrect register choice — књижурина is expressive and often disparaging, not a neutral term for a long novel.

✅ У формалном каталогу пишем да је роман обиман.

In a formal catalogue I write that the novel is lengthy.

Key Takeaways

  • Diminutives express size, affection, informality, or softening; augmentatives combine size or intensity with attitude.
  • A derived noun has its own gender, animacy behavior, plural, and case paradigm.
  • Store productive families such as град — градић and кућа — кућица, but treat lexicalized forms such as столица independently.
  • Expressive augmentatives are common in informal language but require careful judgment, especially when referring to people.
