Neuter Noun Declension

Most Serbian neuter nouns end in -о or -е in the nominative singular: село ‘village,’ место ‘place,’ поље ‘field,’ море ‘sea.’ Their declension is economical: nominative, accusative, and vocative share one form in each number, while dative and locative share another. The central skill is therefore to recognize a small network of stems and syncretic forms, not to memorize fourteen unrelated cells.

Neuter nouns do not show the masculine animate accusative pattern. Even a neuter noun referring to a living being, such as дете, has accusative equal to nominative: видим дете, not детета.

The Regular -о Pattern: село

The noun село uses the stem сел-. In the singular, add -а, -у, or -ом outside the nominative/accusative/vocative form. In the plural, -а covers nominative, accusative, and vocative; -има covers dative, instrumental, and locative.

CaseSingularPluralTypical use
Nominativeселоселаsubject
Genitiveселаселаof/from; quantity
Dativeселуселимаto/for
Accusativeселоселаdirect object; destination
Vocativeселоселаdirect address
Instrumentalселомселимаwith/by; route
Locativeселуселимаin/about after a preposition

Ово мало село лежи поред реке.

This small village lies beside the river.

Лети често идемо у мало село код Краљева.

In summer we often go to a small village near Kraljevo.

У том малом селу више нема школе.

There is no longer a school in that small village.

The first село is nominative because it is the subject. Motion toward a destination selects accusative after у, but the form remains село. Static location after у selects locative селу. English marks this difference mainly with word order and prepositions; Serbian also changes the noun phrase.

💡
For regular neuters, first learn three identity sets: N=A=V, D=L, and plural D=I=L in -има. That reduces the apparent fourteen-form chart to a few recurring shapes.

The Regular -е Pattern: поље

Regular neuters in -е use the same case architecture. After a palatal consonant, instrumental singular normally has -ем, as in пољем and морем, rather than -ом.

CaseSingularPlural
Nominativeпољепоља
Genitiveпољапоља
Dativeпољупољима
Accusativeпољепоља
Vocativeпољепоља
Instrumentalпољемпољима
Locativeпољупољима

Иза куће почиње широко поље сунцокрета.

A wide sunflower field begins behind the house.

Прошли смо пољем пре него што је почела киша.

We crossed the field before the rain began.

На околним пољима већ је почела жетва.

The harvest has already begun in the surrounding fields.

Agreement makes the gender and number visible even when the noun ending is syncretic: широко поље is neuter singular, широка поља neuter plural, and на широким пољима dative/locative/instrumental plural according to context.

Number and Agreement

Neuter adjective endings provide a reliable map:

Number and caseNoun phraseContrast
N/A singularново место-о adjective + -о noun
G singularновог места-ог + -а
D/L singularновом месту-ом + -у
I singularновим местом-им + -ом
N/A pluralнова места-а + -а
D/I/L pluralновим местима-им + -има

Нашли смо ново место, али о новом месту још никоме нисмо причали.

We found a new place, but we haven’t told anyone about it yet.

Нова места су се брзо попунила, па сада нема слободних места.

The new spots filled quickly, so there are no free spots now.

The phrase нема слободних места uses genitive plural after existential нема. The same written noun form места also serves nominative/accusative plural and genitive singular; the agreeing adjective and sentence structure reveal the case.

Animacy Does Not Reshape the Neuter Accusative

Animacy changes the masculine singular accusative, as in видим студента versus видим сто. It does not create a special accusative for neuter nouns. Compare an inanimate regular neuter and an animate extended neuter:

Видим старо здање иза парка.

I can see the old building behind the park.

Видим уморно дете на задњем седишту.

I can see a tired child in the back seat.

Both direct objects retain the nominative shape: здање, дете. Never import the masculine animate A=G rule into the neuter system.

Extended Stems in -н- and -т-

Some frequent neuters hide extra stem material in the nominative, accusative, and vocative singular. The -н- or -т- appears in other cases. For име, compare име–имена–имену; for дете, compare дете–детета–детету.

Caseиме (n-stem)дете (t-stem)
Nominative singularимедете
Genitive singularименадетета
Dative singularименудетету
Accusative singularимедете
Vocative singularимедете
Instrumental singularименомдететом
Locative singularименудетету

Не сећам се имена тог ресторана.

I don’t remember the name of that restaurant.

Пришла је детету и помогла му да веже пертле.

She approached the child and helped them tie their shoelaces.

Many -н- nouns form regular-looking neuter plurals on the extended stem: имена–именима, времена–временима, племена–племенима. The noun дете instead uses the collective деца for its ordinary plural meaning, with its own declension and agreement. The dedicated page on neuter n- and t-stems develops these classes fully.

💡
Store an extended neuter as a three-part set: име–имена–имену or дете–детета–детету. The genitive immediately reveals whether -н- or -т- belongs to the stem.

High-Frequency Irregular Plurals: око and уво

The body-part nouns око ‘eye’ and уво ‘ear’ have regular singular case forms but suppletive plurals очи and уши, which behave as feminine plural forms.

CasePlural of окоPlural of уво
Nominative/Accusative/Vocativeочиуши
Genitiveочијуушију
Dative/Instrumental/Locativeочимаушима

После целог дана пред екраном боле ме очи.

My eyes hurt after a whole day in front of a screen.

Дете је покрило уши рукама кад је почео ватромет.

The child covered their ears with their hands when the fireworks began.

The singular still shows neuter agreement: једно око, једно уво. The plural agreement follows очи, уши: уморне очи, промрзле уши, not neuter уморна очи.

Task 1: Change Singular to Plural

Change the bold noun phrase conceptually from one item to several, and adjust agreement and the verb. Try before reading the answer.

Ово старо село је мирно.

This old village is peaceful. (Prompt: make ‘village’ plural.)

Ова стара села су мирна.

These old villages are peaceful. (Answer)

Ново име је на списку.

The new name is on the list. (Prompt: make ‘name’ plural.)

Нова имена су на списку.

The new names are on the list. (Answer)

The first pair uses regular -а plural throughout. The second exposes the extended stem имен- but has the same neuter plural agreement нова.

Task 2: Follow the Case Signal

Put the highlighted neuter noun phrase into the case signaled by the context: motion у + accusative, location у + locative, and an unprepositional route in the instrumental.

Селимо се у ново место следећег месеца.

We’re moving to a new place next month. (accusative destination)

У новом месту још никога не познајемо.

We don’t know anyone in the new place yet. (locative location)

Путовали смо равним пољем све до реке.

We traveled across the flat field all the way to the river. (instrumental route)

Word order can move these phrases for focus, but their endings continue to mark their roles. That is why Serbian can say У новом месту никога не познајемо without depending on English subject–verb–object order.

Common Mistakes

Applying masculine animate accusative to a neuter noun

❌ Видим уморног детета у аутобусу.

Incorrect — neuter accusative is equal to nominative: уморно дете, not genitive детета.

✅ Видим уморно дете у аутобусу.

I can see a tired child on the bus.

Using accusative after a static location

❌ Живимо у мало село поред реке.

Incorrect — static location after у requires locative: у малом селу.

✅ Живимо у малом селу поред реке.

We live in a small village beside the river.

Using -ом after a palatal stem

❌ Прошли смо широким пољом пре мрака.

Incorrect — the instrumental singular of поље is пољем.

✅ Прошли смо широким пољем пре мрака.

We crossed the wide field before dark.

Ignoring an extended stem

❌ Не сећам се име тог хотела.

Incorrect — genitive singular reveals the n-stem: имена.

✅ Не сећам се имена тог хотела.

I don’t remember the name of that hotel.

Regularizing an irregular body-part plural

❌ Од дима ме пеку ока.

Incorrect — the ordinary plural of око ‘eye’ is очи.

✅ Од дима ме пеку очи.

The smoke is making my eyes sting.

💡
When a form is ambiguous, inspect the whole noun phrase and its governor. Agreement, prepositions, and verb meaning usually reveal the case that the bare ending cannot.

Key Takeaways

  • Regular neuters in -о/-е have N=A=V, D=L, and plural D=I=L in -има.
  • Neuter accusative equals nominative regardless of whether the referent is animate.
  • Adjective agreement distinguishes singular ново место from plural нова места.
  • Extended stems appear outside N/A/V singular: име–имена, дете–детета.
  • Learn око–очи and уво–уши as high-frequency suppletive number pairs.
