Feminine Noun Declension

Serbian feminine nouns follow two major patterns. Most end in -а, like жена “woman” and књига “book.” A second large class ends in a consonant and uses the i-declension, like љубав “love,” ствар “thing,” and ноћ “night.” Both are feminine for agreement, but their noun endings are different.

The fastest route to mastery is to connect repeated forms rather than memorize fourteen separate cells. In both classes, dative and locative singular coincide, and dative/instrumental/locative plural share one form. Unless labeled otherwise, all examples are neutral contemporary standard Serbian.

The full -а paradigm

Here is the regular core pattern with жена:

CaseSingularPlural
Nominativeженажене
Genitiveженежена
Dativeжениженама
Accusativeженужене
Vocativeженожене
Instrumentalженомженама
Locativeжениженама

The singular pattern is -а, -е, -и, -у, -о, -ом, -и. In the plural, nominative/accusative/vocative share -е, genitive usually has no visible ending, and the three oblique cases share -ама.

Жена из суседног стана ради у библиотеци.

The woman from the neighboring apartment works at the library.

Показао сам жени где може да остави колица.

I showed the woman where she could leave the stroller.

Јутрос сам поново срео жену из суседног стана.

This morning I met the woman from the neighboring apartment again.

Nominative жена is the subject, dative жени is the recipient, and accusative жену is the direct object. English uses the unchanged form woman and depends heavily on position; Serbian endings allow those roles to remain clear even when the order changes.

Ту жену је моја сестра упознала на факултету.

My sister met that woman at university.

The object ту жену comes first for emphasis. Feminine accusative -у identifies it; later nominative моја сестра identifies the subject.

Case syncretism in the -а plural

One plural form can fill several cells. Жене can be nominative, accusative, or vocative plural; женама can be dative, instrumental, or locative plural. A preposition, verb, modifier, or sentence function resolves the meaning.

Жене су већ ушле у салу.

The women have already entered the hall.

Позвали су жене да прве уђу.

They invited the women to enter first.

Разговарали смо са женама које воде пројекат.

We spoke with the women who run the project.

The first жене is nominative, the second accusative, and са женама instrumental. This is syncretism—a structural reuse of forms—not looseness or optional case marking.

💡
When two cases look alike, do not guess from the noun alone. Check the governing preposition or verb and the agreement on surrounding words. Serbian distributes grammatical information across the whole phrase.

Stem changes in -а nouns

Before dative/locative singular -и, many stems ending in к, г, or х undergo sibilarization: књига — књизи, девојка — девојци, сврха — сврси. This change is visible in ordinary spelling.

У књизи сам нашао карту старог Београда.

I found a map of old Belgrade in the book.

Пришао је девојци која је чекала испред позоришта.

He approached the young woman who was waiting outside the theater.

The alternation is not automatic in every word. Personal names and many nouns for living beings with the suffix -ка keep the consonant: Анки, новинарки, ауторки. Loanwords also show lexical behavior, as in колеги. This is an area where native usage and dictionaries matter; a single mechanical rule will overgenerate.

Vocative singular also varies. The core common-noun ending is -о (жено, сестро), while longer nouns in -ица often have -е (учитељице, другарице). Personal names and familiar kinship terms often use the nominative shape: Марија!, мама!, тетка! See feminine and neuter vocatives for the lexical detail.

Genitive plural of -а nouns

The apparent zero ending in жена is common, but the stem may change. A fleeting а breaks up consonant clusters in forms such as сестара, девојака, оваца, оловака, and песама. Other nouns take genitive plural -и, including молби, лопти, тајни, and many loanwords such as шанси.

После неколико молби коначно су нам послали одговор.

After several requests, they finally sent us a reply.

Испред школе је стајала група девојака.

A group of girls was standing in front of the school.

There is no single phonetic shortcut covering every genitive plural. Learn this form with nouns whose stems end in a cluster. Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark the accent or vowel length that may distinguish otherwise identical forms.

The full consonant-stem paradigm

Feminine i-stems have no -а in the nominative. The paradigm of љубав is:

CaseSingularPlural
Nominativeљубављубави
Genitiveљубавиљубави
Dativeљубавиљубавима
Accusativeљубављубави
Vocativeљубавиљубави
Instrumentalљубављу / љубавиљубавима
Locativeљубавиљубавима

The instrumental in -ју often changes the final consonant: љубављу, памећу, глађу, младошћу, помоћу. An instrumental in -и is also available for many members, while some nouns allow only -и; lexical confirmation is sometimes necessary. The -ју form is preferred when available, especially without a preposition, because it is easier to distinguish from the many -и forms.

Захвалила му је на помоћи, а поклон је примила с радошћу.

She thanked him for the help and accepted the gift with joy.

На помоћи is locative after на in this construction; с радошћу is instrumental. The endings distinguish the roles even though both nouns belong to the same class.

The same case ending can serve several meanings, while a single preposition can select different cases according to meaning. With у, motion toward an enclosed destination takes accusative (у школу), while location takes locative (у школи). With с(а), accompaniment takes instrumental (са сестром), but с(а) meaning “from/off” takes genitive in a smaller set of spatial expressions (са станице “from the station”). Declension supplies the form; the construction supplies the interpretation.

После посла идем у библиотеку, а увече учимо у библиотеци.

After work we're going to the library, and in the evening we're studying in the library.

This opposition is especially important for English speakers because English prepositions or context carry information that Serbian places directly on the noun phrase.

Ту могућност нисмо озбиљно разматрали.

We did not seriously consider that possibility.

The i-stem accusative singular equals its nominative, but the modifier ту still marks accusative. This has nothing to do with animacy: the genitive-shaped animate accusative is a masculine singular pattern.

💡
Use the genitive to separate two consonant-final nouns: masculine град — града versus feminine ствар — ствари. Then use a familiar instrumental to expose the distinctive i-stem pattern: љубављу, памећу, радошћу.

Gender and declension are separate

Most -а nouns are feminine, but several common nouns for men are masculine: колега, судија, газда, Никола. Their noun endings follow the -а pattern, while adjectives and predicates agree in masculine gender.

Наша колегиница је стигла, а наш колега касни.

Our female colleague has arrived, and our male colleague is running late.

This contrast shows why a final letter is evidence, not a complete gender rule. Conversely, feminine i-stems end in a consonant but require feminine agreement: ова важна ствар је решена.

High-frequency irregular nouns

Мати “mother” is now mostly (formal) or (literary); neutral everyday Serbian normally uses мајка. Its nominative/vocative is мати, accusative матер, and remaining forms use матер- (матере, матери, матером). Кћи “daughter” is standard but especially frequent in formal biographical wording; everyday standard Serbian strongly favors ћерка. Its accusative is кћер, with oblique forms such as кћери and кћерју.

У свакодневном разговору обично кажем да ми ћерка студира у Нишу.

In everyday conversation I usually say that my daughter studies in Niš.

These forms are genuinely irregular. Learning the ordinary alternatives мајка and ћерка is not avoiding the language; it reflects contemporary register.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving a feminine -а direct object in the nominative.

❌ Тражим моја сестра испред станице.

Incorrect — сестра is a direct object and needs accusative сестру; its modifier must agree.

✅ Тражим своју сестру испред станице.

I'm looking for my sister in front of the station.

2. Treating a consonant-final feminine as masculine.

❌ Овај ноћ је био веома хладан.

Incorrect — ноћ is feminine, so all agreeing words must be feminine.

✅ Ова ноћ је била веома хладна.

This night was very cold.

3. Missing the dative/locative stem change.

❌ Белешка је остала у књиги.

Incorrect — књига has locative singular књизи.

✅ Белешка је остала у књизи.

The note was left in the book.

4. Building the i-stem instrumental mechanically.

❌ С великом радостју су дочекали резултате.

Incorrect — радост + -ју yields the standard form радошћу.

✅ С великом радошћу су дочекали резултате.

They welcomed the results with great joy.

Key Takeaways

The -а class uses accusative singular -у, instrumental -ом, and plural oblique -ама. The consonant i-class uses zero ending in nominative/accusative singular, -и across many cells, instrumental -ју/-и, and plural oblique -има. Stem changes in књизи, девојака, and радошћу belong to the word's paradigm. Gender governs agreement, declension class governs the noun ending, and animacy does not create a special feminine accusative.
